Claim 13: A method of producing cotyledonous somatic embryos of conifers comprising: (a) culturing somatic cells of conifers in an induction medium to provide embryogenic cells; (b) culturing the embryogenic cells prepared in step (a) in a liquid maintenance medium to form precotyledone somatic embryos of conifers; (c) dispensing a plurality of precotyledonous embryos prepared in step (b) on a porous material arranged horizontally on a non-porous surface in a volume of sterile dilution medium sufficient to submerge at least the surface of the porous material, thereby dispersing evenly precotyledonous embryos; (d) removing the sterile dilution medium from the porous material, thereby trapping the precotyledonous embryos uniformly dispersed on the porous material; and (e) contacting the precotyledonous embryos trapped on the porous material with development medium for a period of time sufficient to produce cotyledonous somatic embryos of conifers.
