Abstract

A method of protecting a metal surface from seizing (or gearing) and corrosion that includes the step of providing a dry protective film on the metal surface. The film includes a solid lubricant and a conductive polymer, the conductive polymer has lubricant properties and is capable of binding the solid lubricant to the metal surface. The surfaces of metallic pink joints coated with the film are capable of withstanding the seizure under high pressure and high torque conditions, even after several arming and disassembly operations over long periods of time. The film also provides corrosion protection. The method and the film are economical in the sense that only a single layer of protective compound needs to be applied to provide metal surfaces with protection against both seizure and corrosion, and problems such as the removal of the protective compound or blasting, which are associated with protective compounds that use oils. Additionally, the dry film is advantageous because it does not contain heavy metals, which are dangerous for the environment.
