Abstract

Method for adapting bacteria for use in leaching ores and concentrates, method characterized by the following steps: a) obtaining samples of bacteria that exhibit one or more desired attributes; b) combining the bacterial samples from step a) with a bacterial culture strain that is known to possess the ability to oxidize mineral sulphides, whereby the resulting combined bacterial culture ultimately expresses both the most desired attribute (s) such as the ability to oxidize mineral sulphides. The particularly desired attribute is preferably salt tolerance.
