Abstract

A composition of lubricating oils and a method to improve the oxidative stability of a composition of lubricating oils. The lubricating oil composition comprises a base stock of group I and an antioxidant comprising an oil-soluble trinuclear organomolibdene compound of formulagenic acid: Mo3Sx- (Q) (I) where x is 4 to 10, and Q is a major group, which can be a ligand, on the base stock it has a kinematic viscosity at 100 degree C (KV100) of 2cSt at 50 cSt (2 x 10-bm 2 / sec) and a saturated content of <90% w / w, a aromatic content of> 10% w / w and a sulfur content of> 0.03% w / w (300 ppm). The composition has improved stability when compared to Group II, III and IV base stocks that contain the same antioxidant with a Group I base stock that contains a dinuclear molybdenum dithiocarbamate. The method for improving the exodative stability of a lubricant composition comprises adding to the base stock an effective amount of an antioxidant comprising an oil-soluble trinuclear organomolibdene compound of the generic formula Mo3Sx (Q) (I), where x is 4 to 10, preferably 7, and Q is a major group, which can be a ligand.
