Description
METHOD AND ARRANGEMENT FOR MANAGING TRANSACTION INFORMATION RELATED TO AN ELECTRONIC TRANSACTION
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to a method for managing transaction information related to an electronic transaction in an electronic payment solution and a network node for managing transaction information related to an electronic transaction in an electronic payment solution.
BACKGROUND
It has since long been possible to pay by electronic means of payment (e.g. credit cards) for a purchase in e.g. a store. For these electronic means of payment there is an existing flow of events for the electronic transaction in the electronic payment solution.
A POS (Point of Sales) system is usually tied to the electronic payment solution. A common name for the cash register is the English name POS, Point of Sales. The POS system initiates the electronic transaction. The POS system transfers the information of the amount of the purchase to the electronic payment solution in which the electronic transaction is performed.
The electronic payment solution can be a mobile payment solution, an Internet-based payment solution or another electronic payment solution. The electronic transaction is usually between an account at the merchant's bank and the consumer's card issuing bank. The electronic transaction can also be linked to an account at a mobile payment solution.
One problem with today's electronic payment solutions is that a buyer is only offered a physical receipt for a purchase.
There is therefore a need for an improved solution for electronic payments, which reduces or solves at least one of the above problems.
SUMMARY
As mentioned earlier, one problem with today's electronic payment solutions is that the customer is only offered a physical receipt in the store. Some electronic payment solutions can also send a receipt via e-mail or connect an electronic receipt to an account with the electronic payment solution. But for these solutions there is no easy way to access receipts sent via email to stakeholders other than the holder of the email account. The complete information about a purchase is thus today, only presented on a physical receipt or in some cases on a receipt sent via e-mail.
An additional disadvantage of today's electronic payment solutions is that a customer cannot see the complete information of a purchase via existing interfaces such as the account statement from the bank. On the account statement there are only information about when a transaction was performed, who the transaction was performed with and the amount of the transaction.
A further problem with today's electronic payment solutions is that e.g. business travellers needs to manage physical receipts at bookkeeping and accounting of expenses, instead of direct being able to use of a digital receipt.
An object of the present invention is to solve or reduce at least one of the above problems.
A first embodiment of the present invention provides a network node for managing transaction information related to an electronic transaction in an electronic payment solution. The network node comprises a receiver configured to receive transaction information related to an electronic transaction, wherein the transaction information comprises a unique identifier associated with said electronic transaction. The receiver is further configured to receive a request for the transaction information including the unique identifier. The network node also comprises processing means configured to find the transaction information by using the unique identifiers and a transmitter configured to send the transaction data and the unique identifier.
An object of the present invention thus obtained by receiving transaction information related to an electronic transaction. The transaction information can, for example include the goods that were paid with the electronic transaction. Since the transaction information comprises a unique identifier associated with the electronic transaction, the transaction information later can be retrieved using the unique identifier. A request including the unique identifier is received from the electronic payment solution. The transaction information and the identifier are sent to e.g. the electronic payment solution that can present transaction information in e.g. a customer's account statement. The customer is then given the opportunity to e.g. see what goods that have been paid for with a particular transaction.
A second embodiment of the present invention provides a method for managing transaction information related to an electronic transaction in an electronic payment solution. The method comprises the steps of: receiving transaction information related to an electronic transaction, the transaction information includes a unique identifier associated with the electronic transaction; receive a request for the transaction information including the unique identifier; find the transaction information using the unique identifier, and send the transaction information and the unique identifier.
An advantage of the present invention is that the transaction information can be accessed by e.g. the electronic payment solution and be presented in the buyer's credit card statement.
A further advantage of the present invention is that the transaction information can be accessed by the customer, for example a business traveller, where the transaction information is automatically integrated with existing systems for accounting and expense reporting.
Another advantage of the invention is that it provides an opportunity to collect transaction information from a wide variety of electronic payment solutions and make it available to different stakeholders.
A further advantage is that the transaction information recorded in the cash register is made available to the electronic payment solution.
Another advantage is that the transaction information recorded in the cash register is made available to the electronic payment solution without the need for consumer card number or other identification of the consumer.
Further advantages and features of embodiments of the present invention are listed in the following detailed description.
FIGURES
Fig. 1 shows a schematic block diagram of an electronic payment solution.
Fig. 2 shows a schematic block diagram of an example of a network node according to the present invention.
Fig. 3 shows a flow diagram according to an embodiment of the present invention. DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Figure 1 shows a method for performing an electronic transaction in an electronic payment solution 100. In a step 101 the goods a customer buys e.g. in a store is registered in a cash register 102. The electronic payment solution 100 is not limited to only handle electronic transactions related to a purchase in a physical store. The electronic payment solution 100 can also manage electronic transactions related to e.g. purchase of goods or services on the Internet.
In some electronic payment solutions 100 is the cash register 102 directly linked to e.g. a card terminal 105. In these electronic payment solutions 100, the card terminal 105 gets information about the amount of the electronic transaction related to purchase directly from the cash register 102. In other electronic payment solutions 100 must the cashiers manually enter the amount of the electronic transaction in the card terminal 105.
In step 103 the consumers card number, PIN number, expiration date and purchase amount is sent to e.g. a bank 106. If the bank 106 approves the electronic transaction, a confirmation is sent, in step 104, from the bank 106 to the card terminal 105 or cash register 102.
The consumer receives a receipt from the cash register 102 if the purchase is a purchase in a physical store. If the purchase is made on the internet for some solutions a receipt is sent directly to the terminal or the computer which the buyer used to complete the purchase.
In today's electronic payment solutions 100 is not sent all the information related to the electronic transaction sent between e.g. cash regiser102 and the bank 106 in the electronic payment solution 100. E.g. the bank 106 in the electronic payment solution 100 above is not
aware of what goods or services that the electronic transaction concerns.
Figure 2 shows a network node 200, according to the present invention, for managing the transaction information related to an electronic transaction in an electronic payment solution. The network node 200 is described in connection with the above described electronic payment solution 100, but the network node 200 is not limited to interaction with only the electronic payment solution 100. The network node 200 may also interact with many other types of electronic payment solutions, such as mobile payment solutions and Internet-based electronic payment solutions.
The network node 200 includes: a receiver 210 configured to receive transaction information related to an electronic transaction. The transaction information may e.g. be what goods or services that were paid for with the electronic transaction. The transaction information comprises a unique identifier associated with the electronic transaction. The unique identifier can include for example information that is created by any part of the electronic payment solution 100 and be information already submitted in the electronic payment solution 100. Since the unique identifier includes information that is already used by the electronic payment solution 100 the network node 200 can easily be used with various electronic payment solutions without that these need to be modified.
In one embodiment of the network node 200 the unique identifier includes at least a first identifier that identifies an equipment of the payee, RRN, Retrieval Reference Number, in ISO 8583 and a time stamp for the electronic transaction. RRN is a reference created by the equipment of the payee. RRN may also be a reference which is unique to each terminal in e.g. a shop for a certain period of time. RRN can also be a unique number for an electronic transaction set by the party that initiates the electronic transaction, such as a payment terminal.
Since the unique identifier comprises at least a first identifier that identifies a device of the payee, RRN, Retrieval Reference Number in ISO 8583 and a time stamp for the electronic transaction, the electronic transaction is identified by parameters already sent in electronic payment solutions. An advantage of this is that no additional equipment in the existing electronic payment systems is required for the identification of the electronic transaction. A further advantage is that it does not require an extra step in the buying process.
In one embodiment of the network node 200 according to the present invention, the first identifier is CATID, Card Acceptor Terminal Identification in ISO 8583.
In yet another embodiment of the network node 200 according to the present invention the unique identifier further comprises a second identifier, the first identifier identifying a device of the payee, RRN, Retrieval Reference Number in ISO 8583 and a time stamp for the electronic transaction. The second identifier identifies the redeemer of the electronic transaction. The other identifier may be the AID Acquiring Institution Identification Code, in ISO 8583.
In yet another embodiment of the network node 200 according to the present invention the unique identifier comprises a third identifier, the first identifier that identifies an equipment of the payee, RRN, Retrieval Reference Number in ISO 8583 and a time stamp for the electronic transaction. The third identifier identifies a payee for the electronic transaction. The third identifier can be CAID, Card Acceptor Identification Code, in ISO 8583.
In yet another embodiment, the unique identifier in addition to a first identifier that identifies an equipment of the payee, RRN, Retrieval Reference Number, ISO 8583, and a time stamp for the electronic transaction a fourth identifier that specifies the identity of the payee. The fourth identifier can be CANID, Card Acceptor Name, in ISO 8583. The receiver 210 of network node 200 is further configured to receive a request for transaction information including the unique identifier. The request can e.g. be sent from a bank or other operator wishing to access the transaction information. The network node 200 comprises additional processing means 220 e.g. a processor configured to find the transaction information using the unique identifier that was sent with the request. A transmitter 230 in the network node 200 is configured to send the transaction information and the unique identifier. The transaction information and the unique identifier can e.g. be sent to the bank that sent the request for transaction information.
The network node 200 of the present invention results in that the electronic transaction in an electronic payment solution may be supplemented with the transaction information that is not available in electronic payment solutions today.
The unique identifier that is used in the present invention includes information in the existing standards for electronic payments, which means that the existing electronic payment solutions can be used with the present invention.
Figure 3 shows a flow chart of a method for managing transaction information related to an electronic transaction in an electronic payment solution according to previously described embodiments. The method can be performed in the network node 200, but the method is not limited to be performed in the network node 200 but may be performed in one or several other nodes or systems. As shown in Figure 3, the method comprises:
300 receiving transaction information related to an electronic transaction, wherein the transaction information comprises a unique identifier associated with said electronic transaction;
310 receive a request for the transaction information including the unique identifier;
320 find the transaction information by using the unique identifiers, and
330 sending the transaction information and the unique identifier.
The present invention also relates to computer program code which when executed in the network node or other nodes in a system causes the network node to perform the method of any of the previously described embodiments.
The present invention provides that transaction information related to e.g. a purchase in various types of POS systems can be linked to a specific electronic transaction in an electronic payment solution. The transaction information can, for example be what goods or services that were paid for with the electronic transaction. No additional identification step of the consumer is required in the present invention but a purchase can be implemented with various POS systems and different electronic payment solutions. The present invention works regardless if the electronic payment solution is a card transaction, a mobile payment solution or other electronic payment solution.
The present invention also allows a request for transaction information to be sent from the POS system to the network node 200.
An example of the use of the transmitted transaction information of the present invention is the production of statistics. E.g. a detailed summary of the detailed information of the transaction information, such as tax amount, a digital receipt, categorization of data in
transaction information. These statistics may be presented by the system that receives the transaction information.
As mentioned before, today a consumer usually receives a physical receipt in the store. An original receipt must today also be printed in the physical form to fulfil current law requirements. Previously known solutions to offer consumers a digital receipt cannot do this through existing electronic payment solutions. But requires its own distribution channel or even own hardware for identification. The attempts available today to offer a consumer a digital receipt thus implies identification in the form of email, ID card, etc. or require registration of cards via a webpage.
The present invention enables it to offer and create statistics from the transaction information, such as consumers sorted after given parameters such as demography, sex, shopping behaviour, etc. without infringing on the PUL. In this application, a bank or mobile payment solution is the transmitting systems and POS the receiving systems. POS can in this case be linked to the merchant, i.e. the store or chain where a purchase is carried out.
The present invention also makes it possible to generate financial statements from the transaction information of a consumer economy. E.g. for given parameters included in the transaction information for the consumer.
