Description

AU 2903 Ex DESIGN.
W. N. BARTHOLOMBW RUBBER ERASER.
No. 3,810. 5 Patented Jan. 4, 1870.
FIGJ.
WILLIAM N. BARTHOLOMEW, OE NEWTON CENTRE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO J. REGKENDORFER, OF SAME PLACE.
Design No. 3,810, dated January 4, 1870.
DESIGN FOR A RUBBER BRASER.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIABI N. Banrnononnw, of Newton Centre, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and original Design for tubbcr Erasers; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact dc scription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which is represented a rubber erascr, designed according to my invention.
Heretolbre rubber erasers have been made of flat blocks of rubber, of rectangular or similar form.
My invention consists of a rubber eraser, made as hereinafter described, and having a cylindrical form, the advantages of which form over other configurations are many, and of great llllPOI'l'iUlCB.
The eraser is made of one or more cylindrical picces of rubber, A, Figure 1, enclosed by a case, B, of leather, or paper made in imitation of leather, or the case may be made of other suitable material.
The arrangement of these parts is shown more clearly in section in Figure 2, the case B being wrapped tightly around, and caused, by suitable means, to adhere closely to the rubber.
If the cylindrical rubber be made in two parts or sections, one section may be made of the compound used for ordinary pencil-erasing, the other of the 00mponnd used for ink-erasers.
The ends of the rubber which project from the case B may be out or shaped as shown in fig. 1; that is to say, may have. a cunitorin-shapc, this conformation being the most convenient for use.
As the rubber wears away, the casc B can be cut away, and the rubber rcsharpencd, if desired.
The case which encloses the rubber, when made of the material described, is cheap, and adheres closely to the rubber, being fastened thereto by cement or like means, and keeps the body of the rubber protected from the fingers and perfectly clean.
The most convenient length for this article is about two and a half inches, as this would allow it to be. carried in the pocket. with ease, and, at the same time, adapt it for desk and for artists use; but it may be. made longer or shorter, as desired.
The cylindrical form of the eraser allows it to be handled and used with all the facility and accuracy with which pens or pencils are used, and it may be held in the same manner. The advantages it poss sses over the ordinary erasers now in use, are therefore of great importance, in this respect alone, and when taken in conjunction with the fact that the article can be carried in the pocket without more inconvenience than a lead-pencil, and that the body of the rubber is almost entirely protected and shielded from dirt, 850., its superior utility over ordinary eraser-s will be at once apparent.
I am aware that a square rubber core has been in sertcd in one end of an ordinary wooden pencil-sheath, the lead core being on the opposite end, and occupying the greater portion of the length of the sheath; but, inasmuch as the core is necessarily of small diameter or sectional area, it is necessarily either too liniber, if made of pure rubber, or, if compounded with stifl'ening and gritty substances, too brittle, and therefore not available for the purposes intended.
Having now described my invention, and the manner in which the same is or may be carried into effect,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcnt, as a new and original design, is-
The design for a rubber eraser, as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, before two subscribing witnesses.
\VM. N. BARTHOLOMEW.
