SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Fatent No. 627,279, dated June 20, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH D. STAssAR'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have 'invented a new and useful Combined Pencil-Sharpener and Eraser, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to lead-pencils, and

more especially to a certain improved device to be attached to a lead-pencil to perform the double function of a lead-pencil eraser and pencil-Sharpener.

The object of myinvention is to provide a combined eraser and Sharpener to be'attached to and sold with the pencil, which while being perfectly reliable in the performance of its double function shall be so simple and cheap asnto permit of its beingapplied to the pencil Without materially increasing its selling price.

Vith this object in view my invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In order t0 enable others skilled in the art to which myinvention most nearly appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a perspective view illustrating a pencil provided with a combined eraser and Sharpener constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a view, on an enlarged scale, of the upper end of the pencil and the attached combined eraser and Sharpener. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through the same on the line 4 4 of Fig." 2. Fig. 5 is a similar view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the knife detached.

Like letters of reference mark the same parts wherever they occur in the various figures of the drawings.

Referring to the drawings by letters, A indicates the main body of a pencil, upon which is securedl a tube B, provided with a series of spun threads, asat C..

D indicates a tube having spun threads E of a size to engage the threads O ofthe tube B, whereby the tube D may be removed or replaced by threading it on or off at will. F is a similar tube, with spun threads G, in which is seated a rubber eraser H.

I I indicate the iiat metal sections connecting the tubes D and F and formed integrally therewith. The tubesD and F and the intervenin g flat portions I I' were originally formed as a single straight tube having the threads E at one end and the threads G at the other for the same purposes as those for which they are utilized in carrying out this invention. The flat intervening portions I l' are formed from `the central portion of the original tube by stamping by means of a die of the proper configuration to form these flat portions and a longitudinal tubular portion of smaller diameter than the tubes D and F and composed of a conical section .I an intervening cylindrical portion K, and aconical section L. The iiat portions I and I are thus formed of a double thickness of metal, as shown, and the outer edge of the flat portion I is cut off, forming an opening into the space between its thicknesses of metal.

M indicates the knife, formed of a single piece of sheet-steel bent to form the body N and blade O, as clearly shown.

A slot P is formed in the course of manufacture in the conical section J, extending into the cylindrical section K. The knife M being shaped as shown is secured by placing the body N thereof between the two thicknesses of the flat section I' and securing it therein by pressure, in which position the blade O will pass through the slot P in the conical section J, exposing its edge inside said conical section, as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5.

To operate my invention as an eraser, it may be used in the ordinary well-known manner, the rubber eraser H forming the outer end of the whole structure, and to operate the invention as a pencil-Sharpener the whole attachment is removed from the body of the pencil by turning the threads E from the IOO threads C, reversing the pencil, inserting its point into the tube D and conical section J, and nally by turning the pencil in contact with the edge of the knife-blade While holding the attachment in the other end against turning until a sufficient amount of Wood has been removed and the lead properly pointed.

From the foregoing itwill be obvious that I have provided an efficient combined pencil- Sharpener and eraser Which is so simple and cheap that it may be sold with the pencil` themselves 'to the ordinary mechanic would properly fall Within the limit and scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent of the United States, is-

Animproved combined pencil-Sharpener and eraser, comprisinga tube, adapted at one end to engage a tubular sleeve on the end of the pencil and at the other to carry an eraser, having its intervening portion flattened at each side and formed with a smaller, tubularv section, slotted longitudinally, and a knife having its body secured to one of the attened portions and its blade bent over and projected through the slot, all vsubstantially as described.

2. The herein-describedimproved combined pencil-Sharpener and eraser consisting of the tube D adapted to be attached to the pencil', the tube F carrying the rubber eraser, the conical section J, tubular section K the conical section L and the fiat double-thickness laterally-projecting wings Z, l', the latter having its edge cut away, all of these parts except the eraser, being formed integrally, and the knife M composed of the body N, pressed between the two thicknesses of the section Z', and a knife-blade bent over and projected inward through the slot P in the conical section J, all substantially as set forth.
