To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDNA B. ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, and residing at the city of Anderson, county of Madison, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Combination Packing and Display Case, of which invention the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in boxes or cases which are composed of a blank or sheet of fibrous material or stout paper known as box board, and the sides of which blank are divided into flaps or leaves so that the blank is capable of being folded and secured into the form of a box.

The objects of my invention are to provide a box or receptacle of the character referred to, which, in addition to being rugged and durable and of improved general construction, will be capable of being transformed into and which will constitute an effective display case, at the same time retaining its quality as a receptacle or containing device.

These general objects, and more specific objects which will be apparent as the nature of my invention is more thoroughly understood, are accomplished by the new construction, combination and arrangement of parts, described in this specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and defined in the appended claims.

Corresponding parts are designated by similar characters of reference throughout the several views in the drawings, and in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved packing and display case, as the same appears when used as a packing case exclusively. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of Fig. 1, the flaps A and B being in open position. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of Fig.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of Fig. 1, showing the flaps A and B returned to the closed position, and the appearance of the flap E and its connected parts when my invention is used as a display device as well as a retaining receptacle. Fig. 5 is a plan view showing the body blank which when folded into form constitutes my improved packing and display case.

The flaps A and B and the body portion C ofthe blank, form the sides of my improved packing and display case. These flaps are folded along the dotted lines in such manner that the portions A and B of the said flaps will constitute two of the walls of the case; these I will designate as the side walls. The flaps D and E are folded over in similar manner and the portions D and E constitute the end walls of the case.

Formed integral with the flaps A and B are the wall flaps F F, and formed integral with the flap E are the wall flaps G G, the function of which wall fiaps will be presently referred to. By the transverse slits E the sides of the end portion E of the fiap E are free to be curled and by a suitable fastening means such as a hookvH, may be secured into the form as shown in Fig. A.

J J designate arms, each of which has its one end fastened to the flap E. The fastenings for these arms'are such that the arms will normally occupy the positions as shown in Fig. 3 and Fig. 5, in alinement with each other and between the dotted fold lines of the wall flaps Gr. These fastenings consist of the rivets K which will hold the arms firmly but not immovably in the retracted positions as shown.

The ears B of the flap B will engage the diagonal slits in the flap A, when the flaps A and B are brought over into the closed position as shown in Fig. 1.

From the illustrations, and the foregoing description, the functions of the several parts of my invention will be apparent.

My invention provides a container or case which is intended more especially for the retention of articles of merchandise of light character, such as shirt waists, under shirts, corset covers and the like, the objects being in addition to providing a case that will be easy of manipulation, rugged, and durable, to afford means carried by the case whereby it is capable of being transformed into a device upon which the article contained in the case may be supported for display purposes. The articles properly folded that are to be inclosed, are disposed in position on the body portion C of the blank. The flaps A and B are raised to vertical position and the wall flaps F F are turned inwardly at a right angle. The flap D is then raised and the end thereof is folded over into the position as most plainly shown in Fig. 2 and Fig. 3. The flap E having its wall flaps G bent inwardly is then raised and brought over into the position shown in Fig. 2. To complete the closing of the case, the flap A is brought over to contact with the flaps D and E, and then with the folding over of the flap B and the insertion of the ears B into the diagonal slits, the closing of the case is complete. A case or container so constructed will be compact and strong. The wall flaps F F and G G will stiffen and brace the end and side Walls respectively.

One of the essential features of my invention is that wherein my improved case is capable of being converted into a display device. In the business of merchandising shirt waists, under skirts and the like, it is very essential that there may be suitable means at hand for the purpose of presenting to view properly for display purposes, the said merchandise. 7

With my invention the necessity of the removal from the case and subsequent rearrangement thereof on separate display devices, of the goods contained in said case, is obviated, inasmuch as my invention combines the advantages of a packing case and display device.

To use my invention as a display device, the flaps A and B are opened, as shown in Fig. 2, and the flap E is thrown into the position as shown in Fig. 3. The arms J may be moved into extended position and will occupy positions of any desired angularity with reference to the body portion of the case. The end portion E of the flap E may then be curled into the cylindrical form as shown in Fig. 4. On the display case thus formed the garment may be easily arranged and displayed advantageously. If desired, the case may be suspended by the flexible tape E that is connected to the end portion E of the flap E. The flaps A and B having been returned to the closed position, the contents of the case will be retained while the drapery or body of the article that is on display will obscure the case from view.

By my invention economy of valuable space is possible as the storage and the display of the articles is accomplished by the use of the same container or case.

My improved packing and display case may be made of any size and of difi'erent depths and is of utility for the packing and display of dress goods, handkerchiefs, towels and in fact almost any class of textile merchandise. The wall flaps F F formed integral with the flaps A and B, and the wall flaps G G formed integral with the flap E is regarded as the preferable arrangement thereof.

It i s obvious that minor changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts of my invention, including the formation of these wall flaps without departing from the nature or spirit of my invention, or sacrificing any of its advantages.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A device of the kind described, comprising a blank having flaps 011 the four sides of the body portion thereof, one flap of the first pair of flaps having wall flaps on its ends, and each flap of the second pair of flaps having a wall flap at one side of its bottom portion and adjacent the body portion of the blank, the said second pair of flaps capable of being secured together.

2. A device of the kind described, comprising a blank having flaps on the four sides thereof, one flap of the first pair of flaps having wall flaps 011 its ends, and each flap of the second pair of flaps having a wall flap at one side of its bottom portion and adjacent the body portion of the blank, means to secure together the ends of the second pair of flaps, arms carried by one flap of the first pair of flaps and which arms are, capable of being dis osed at various angles with reference to t e said flap.

3. A device of the kind described, comprising a blank having main flaps on the four sides of the body portion therwf one flap of the first pair of main flaps having wall flaps on its ends and there being transverse sllts in the said main flap whereby the sides of the end portion of said main flap may be curled toward each other, means to secure the sides of said end portion together, arms carried by the said main flap which will lie parallel to each other while in retracted position, and which are capable of being disposed at various angles with reference to said flaps, a wall flap at one side of the bottom of each flap of the second pair of main flaps and adjacent to the body portion of the blank, means to secure the second pair of main flaps together.
