UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. ALLEN, 0F ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHRISTIAN F. SCHNEIDER, OF ALTON, ILLINOIS, AND ONE-EIGHTI-I TO D. F. DIRKS, OF ST. LOUIS,
MISSOURI.
SAFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June '7, 1910.
Application filed April 21, 1909. Serial No. 491,388.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Statev of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generally to safes, and more particularly to safe bodies, the object of my invention being to construct a safe body in a single piece and of such shape as to insure great strength in withstanding the efforts of safe blowers in gaining access to the interior of the safe.
A further object of my invention is to provide the interior of the safe with a lining of hardened plastic material, such as cement, which not only adds strength to the safe body, but assists in rendering same perfectly reproof.
A further object of my invention is to so construct the inner surfaces of the walls, top and bottom of the safe body as that the lining of hardened plastic material will be rigidly anchored to said walls, top and bottom.
To the above purposes, my invention consists in certain features of novelty herein described, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical section taken through the center of a safe body of my improved construction, with the base partly in section; Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation looking against the inner face of one of the walls of the safe body before the filling of hardened plastic material is located thereon.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, l designates a suitable base which is mounted on small wheels or rollers 2, and formed in the top of said base is a concave recess 3. The safe body is formed of a single piece of hardened metal and comprises four walls 4, the top 5 and the bottom 6. Formed throu h the center of one of the walls 4 is a oor-opening 7 which is adapted to be closed by a suitable door (not shown). The four walls, top and bottom are segmental in cross-section, with the con- Vex surfaces on theeXterior, and this particular formation of the safe body insures great strength for the reason that each wall, top and bottom form arches the ends of which are integral with one another. The bottom 6 iits snugly in the recess 3 in the top of the base 1, and formed integral with said bottom 6 is a lug 8 which enters a corresponding recess 9 formed in the base l, said lug being locked to said base by means of a key, or in any suitable manner.
Formed integral with the inner surfaces of the walls, top and bottom of the safe body are intersecting cross-ribs 10, which materially strengthen said walls, top and bottom, and the pockets or recesses formed between said ribs provide means whereby the filling or lining of plastic material is firmly anchored in position. The lining 11 for the interior of the safe body is composed of suitable plastic material which hardens when dry and is preferably a combination of cement and water, or cement, asbestos and water, and this composition when plastic is applied to the inner surfaces of the walls, top and bottom of the safe body, and when smoothed up forms a solid iireproof lining for the body.
A safe body of my improved construction is very strong and substantial, can be formed of any suitable metal, and the lining of hardened plastic material combines with the walls of said safe body to form a substantial fireproof structure.
I claim:
The herein-described safe body, constructed in a single piece, the walls top and bottom of which are segmentally curved in cross-section, cross ribs integral with the inner faces of the walls, top and bottom, and a lining of hardened plastic material covering said ribs and filling the spaces between said ribs.
JAMES M. ALLEN.
Attest:
