SAFE
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS M. BRINT- NALL and NELSON R. DOOLITTLE, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Oakland and Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates more particularly to the production of a fireproof safe, and it has for its object the construction of a safe which insures increased fireproof protection, while at the same time materially decreasing the cost as to the manufacture thereof, also to dispense with the metallic door and jamb frames at present employed in connection with safes, whereby a perfect union of the door and its jamb is obtained.
To comprehend the invention reference should be ad to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a front view of the safe; Fig. 2 a horizontal sectional plan view thereof; and Fig. 3 a broken sectional plan view of a modified form of the door construction.
In carrying out the invention there is preferably employed the ordinary angle frame 1 common to safe construction. Within the said angle frame 1, which forms a skeleton frame for the safe, is located a layer 2 of reinforcing wire, which serves as a basket or wire casing for the concrete wall filling 3. This reinforcing wire, basket or casing 2 surrounds and is embedded in the concrete filling or wall 3, which filling serves as the body proper for the safe, and takes the place of the solid metallic body walls ordinarily employed for such purpose in the construction of safes. The thickness of the concrete body 3 is in proportion to the size of the safe, and suffi- Icient to insure the requisite strength there- The interior safe chamber or compartment is formed by means of the metallic box 4, which is embedded within the' concrete body 3, suitable air chambers 4 being formed between the walls of the metallic box 4, and the concrete body 3, by means of the dished plates 5, which plates are secured in any suitable manner to the outer walls of the metallic box 4. The corners of the said box 4 are strengthened and bound by means of Specification of Letters Patent.

the angle plates 6. The compartment or safe chamber 5 is closed by means of the inner safe door 7, which is hinged to the frame of the box 4 in the usual manner.
The outer door of the safe is formed of the inner and outer face plates 89, which are held apart by means of the interior wall or bed 10 of concrete. The said door plates are secured in position and held to the concrete wall or bed 10 by the angle bars or straps 1112, which are secured to and project re spectively, preferably in staggered position, from the face plates 8-9, the said angle bars or straps being embedded within the concrete wall or bed 10, and serving as a bond of union between the said plates and the concrete wall or bed 10.
The inner face plate 8 carries and supports the bolt-tube 13, within which works the locking bolts 14, the said bolts being operated by the handle 15, carried by the outer face plate 9. The usual actuating connection between the handle 15 and the lockbolts 14 is situated within the concrete bed or wall 10. The ends of the locking-bolts 14, when the same are thrown to lock the outer door of the safe, register with and fit within the socket thimbles 16, embedded within the jamb edge of the body 3 of the safe.
The usual metal door and jamb frames, with the cast steps are omitted in the described constructed fireproof safe, the door and jamb steps 1818 being formed directly in the face of the concrete body 3 of the safe, and the separating wall or bed 10 of the outer door, the steps so formed being exact counterparts.
When the outer door is closed, the inner face plate 8 bears against the inwardly flanged edge portion 19 of the light metallic door frame 20, for the inner door 7 of the interior safe compartment or chamber 5. When the outer safe door is thus positioned, an union between the edge of the said door and the door jamb portion of the concrete body of the safe is obtained by means of the anchor clips 2122, which form interlocking tongues. These said anchor clips 2122 are embedded respectively in the body of the safe, and the concrete wall or bed 10 of the outer door of the safe.
The outer door of the safe is carried on the crane or duplex hinge 23, which is of the usual construction, the said door being moved into and out of the door frame opening by means of the pressure bar 23.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings, the tie angle bars or straps 1112 are dispensed with, and in place of the same the tie bolts 2424 are employed, which bolts project respectively from the door plates 89, and are embedded within the concrete wall or bed 10, passing through or between the rods 17 which serves to reinforce the concrete wall or bed 10 interposed between the face lates 89 of the outer door of the safe. nstead of the reinforcing wire webbing for the wall or bed 10, disclosed in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the reinforcing rods 17 are used, although expanded metal may be employed. In fact, expanded metal may be employed in lieu of the reinforcing wire, basket or casing 2 for the concrete body of the safe.
In the manufacture of the described fireproof safe, a suitable mold for the outer door is provided. Into this mold the front plate 9 of the outer door, together with its tie bars, straps or bolts is placed. The mold is then filled with concrete to approximately onehalf the thickness of the door, when the intermediate reinforcing wire 17, together with the inner face plate 8 of the door with its tie bars, straps or bolts is placed in position, and the filling in of the concrete to form the wall or bed 10 continued with until the said wall or bed 10 is formed. Time is then given for the concrete to set, when the mold is removed and the edge of the door surfaced with a graphite mixture or other non-adhesive substance, to insure against cohesion of the door with the jamb frame portion of the concrete body of the safe when the said body is formed. The skeleton angle frame 1, with its reinforcing wiring 2 is then positioned within a suitable mold, and the concrete body formed around the metallic box 4, which forms the inner safe compartment or cham ber 5. The concrete body of the safe is thus molded to or formed around its door, being left in the mold until the concrete becomes sufficiently hard to permit of the removal of the mold. The safe as thus molded is comlete except as to its exterior finish, which finish is given by forming the outer panels 25 of cement, flush with the surface of the angle frame 1. The general appearance of the safe is greatly enhanced by surfacing the cement panels with litharge enamel, or other suitable enamel, and painting and varnishing the exposed surfaces of the safe. A safe is thus produced combining utility, economy of construction, and fireproof qualities to the highest degree.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be protected by Letters Patent is 1. A fireproof safe, the same comprising a skeleton angle frame, a reinforced lining therefor, an inner metallic box forming the interior compartment of the safe, a concrete body within which said box and the reinforced lining for the angle frame is embedded, and air compartments interposed between the walls of the said box and the concrete body of the safe.
2. A fireproof safe free of metallic door and jamb frames, the same comprising a skeleton angle frame, a body of concrete forming the wall of the safe, an interior safe compartment within the concrete body, a door for closing the opening of the concrete body, the said door consisting of an inner and an outer face plate, and a concrete wall or bed interposed between the said face plates.
3. A fireproof safe free of metallic door and jiamb frames, the same comprising a skeleton angle frame, a reinforced lining for the angle frame, an inner box forming the interior compartment of the safe, a concrete body for the safe within which the reinforced lining and the said box are embedded, outer cement panels for the safe approximately flush with the surfaces of the angle frame, a door for the safe, thesame consisting of an innerand'an outer face plate, and a concrete wall or bed interposed between the said plates, and union pieces extended from the face plates and embedded within the concrete wall or bed between the said plates.
4. In a safe of the described character, the combination with the concrete body thereof, of a door composed of an inner and an outer faceplate and a concrete wall or bed interposed between the said face plates and to which the plates are held, and anchor clips embedded respectively in the edge of the concrete body of the safe and the door edge of the concrete wall or bed of the door.
5. A fireproof safe, the same comprising a skeleton angle frame, an inner metallic box forming the interior compartment of the safe, a concrete body within which said box is embedded, and which body of concrete forms the outer wall of the safe, and air compartments interposed between the walls of thp said box and the concrete body of the sa e.
