Description

@wird States s. T. BEAT, OE FLORENCE, NEW JERsEY.
Letters Patent No. 92,541, dated July 13, 1869,
IMPROVEMENT IN AUG-E-HANDLES.
The Schedule referred to-in these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may conce/m;
Be it known that I, S. T. PEAT, of Florence, inthe county of Burlington, and State of New Jersey, have invented a 'new 'and useful Improvement in Auger- Handles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to'make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in angerhandles, such as are used for holding shanks of various sizes vand form, and adapted for readily attaching and detachng the same; and consists in certain improvements, designed to cheapen the construction and provide a more reliable holding-device.
Figure 1 represents-a sectional elevation, and
Figure 2, a horizontal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate 4corresponding parts.
A represents a lnetallic holder, which I prefer to form by casting.
It is provided with the horizontal hole a, for the wood handle, and the vertical socket b, for the reception of the shanksof the angers to be held, and a sliding clamping-jaw, c, for clamping against one side of the shank.
The said holder is provided with vertical grooves d in the sides of the vertical opening b, and lateral grooves ecommunicating therewith,land the clamping-jaw is provided with trunnions f, to slide in the said grooves and maintainthe jaw in its position in the holder, while allowing it to slide to and from the slianks to be clamped. y
The said jaw is provided with a right-angular notch, or groove in its face, for taking in the corner of a square shank, or clamping against the side ofaround one, and a set-screw, g, is provided for moving and clamping the jaw to hold the angers.
Set-screws h are arranged in the side of the part A, opposite to the jaw O, at such an angle that when a square shank is to be held, they will bear fair upon the two sides of the same. They will also bear upon *a round shank in this form, equally as well as in any other. v
Having thus described my invention, v
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent` The metallic holder A, cast in one piece, with the horizontal hole a, for the passage of the auger-handle, the vertical passage b, for the reception ofthe augershank, and with theinterior angular grooves dv e, adapted to receivethe trunnions f of the adjustable jaw C, all constructed, arranged, and operating as described for the purpose specified.
S. T. PEAT.
