PATENTED OCT. 23, 1906.
- w. B.FENN.- BUILDING BRICK OR BLOCK AND FACING THEREFOR.
APPLIOATION FILED JULY 31. 1905.
WITNESSES A Tron/Ins rm: unRRls PETERS cm, WASBINGTDN. n. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFron WILLIAM B. FENN, OF SHEEPSHEAD BAY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO OSCAR BUNKE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BUILDING BRICK OR BLOCK AND FACING THEREFOR- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 23, 1906.
Application filed July 31,1905. Serial No 271,935.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. FE N, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sheepshead Bay, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Building Bricks or Blocks and Facings Therefor, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates particularly to building bricks or blocks and facings therefor composed of clay, cement, or any other suitable material capable of being molded into the desired form; and the invention consists of bricks or blocks of this class and of facings therefor, made as hereinafter described and provided with novel means for locking the facings to the bricks or blocks either at the time when the bricks or blocks are placed in a wall or after the wall has been completed, a further object being to provide a facing for bricks or blocks of the class specified composed of tiling or any other suitable material molded into the required form and adapted to be locked to bricks or blocks in a wall, as hereinafter described.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side or face view of my improved brick or block; Fig. 2, a back view of my improved tiling or facing; and Fig. 3, a front view showing the method of connecting the facing or tiling with the brick or block, part of the facing or tiling being in section.
In the practice of my invention I provide a brick or block a, which may be of any desired dimensions and composed of any suitable material capable of being molded or pressed into the desired form, and this brick or block is provided in one side, the front side thereof, with recesses a which open upwardly through the top surface of the brick or block, as shown in Fig. 3, and the side walls of which converge downwardly, as clearly shown at a and said side walls are undercut, as shown at a in Fig. 3, and the recesses (1 two of which are employed, are preferably terminated above the bottom of the brick or block, as shown at a. I also I provide a tiling or facing I), the back of which is provided with downwardly-converging and outwardly-flaring locking-ribs b, which terminate above the bottom of the top of the brick or block, as shown in Fig. 1, and the distance between which is slightly less than the distance between the side walls a of the recesses a in the brick or block a. The back of the tiling or facing b is also provided at each end and centrally thereof with recesses b which conform in shape to the spaces at the ends of the tiling or facing and to the separate spaces between the separate pairs of locking-ribs N.
In practice the bricks or blocks a, are raid in a wall in the ordinary manner, and, if desired, the facings or tilings b may be applied thereto, as shown in Fig.3, during the operation of building the wall, or said facings or tilings may be applied to the bricks or blocks after the wall has been completed. In applying the facings or tilings to the bricks or blocks the backs of the facings or tilings are covered with a suitable cement and the face or front sides of the bricks or blocks may be similarly covered,'if desired, and the facings or tilings are then manipulated so as to pass the ribs 1) of the facings or tilings into the recesses a of the bricks or blocks. In this operation the facings or tilings are raised slightly above the bricks or blocks and pressed backwardly until the ribs b enter the recesses a after which the facings or tilings are forced downwardly until the top and bottom surfaces thereof are flush with the top and bottom surfaces of the bricks or blocks. In this operation the outwardly-flaring ribs b of the facings or tilings interlock with the undercut side walls a of the bricks or blocks and securely lock the facings or tilings to said bricks or blocks. The object of forming the recesses b in the back of the facings or tilings is to insure a perfect fit between said facings or tilings and the bricks or blocks and also to insure a proper adhesion between the facings or tilings and the bricks or blocks. It is a wellknown fact that it is very diflicult to mold or press facings or tilings of this class so that the back surface thereof will be perfectly even, and thus afford proper means for making a secure and even connection between the facings or tilings and the bricks or blocks, and by orming the recesses b in the back surface of the facings or tilings this difficulty is obviated, and said recesses may be of any desired shape .and of any preferred dimensions,
or blocks, if desired.
It will blocks and the facings be of any desired dimensions but in all cases the facings or tilings dimensions as the front or face side of the bricks or blocks.
Having fully described my invention, what claim as new, ters Patent, is
l. A building brick or block provided in the front side thereof with recesses which open upwardly through the top surface thereof, the side walls of said recesses converging inwardly and downwardly and being undercut, and a facing or tiling provided on its back side with looking-ribs arranged in pairs and adapted to be inserted into said recesses, said locking-ribs converging inwardly and downwardly and being outwardly flared and terminating below the top edge of the facing or tiling and above the bottom edge thereof, substantially as shown and described.
2. A building brick or block provided in the front side thereof with recesses which open upwardly through the top surface thereof, the side walls of said recesses converging inwardly and downwardly and being undercut, and a facing or tiling provided on its back side with locking-ribs arranged in pairs and adapted to be inserted into said recesses, said locking-ribs converging inwardly and downwardly and being outwardly flared and terminating below the top edge of the facing or tiling and above the bottom edge thereof, said facing or tiling being also provided with recesses in the back surface thereof, substan tially as shown and described.
