UNITED STATES ATENT EETCE.
FRANCIS H. SHAW, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
MANUFACTURE OF BRICKS MADE OF GLASS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,%18, dated May 13, 1884.
Application filed March 12, N84. (No model.)
To all whom it mag concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS H. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at N ewark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Bricks Made of Glass or Similar Material, of which 1 the following is a true and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
In the use of bricks made of glass the mortar which is now used in laying clay bricks has no effect in preventing the movement of bricks of this class. In clay brick the mortar forms with the clay in the bricks a chemical combination, causing an adhesion at the joints between the layers or surfaces of the two bricks.
I propose to cast bricks made of glass in such manner that the edges of the bricks present to each other two surfacesone a grooved, the other a tongued, so that the tongued surface will fit into thegroove and hold the two bricks compact. To make the surface entirely rigid, I cast on the rear surface of the bricks dovetailed keys, which restagainst the solid orinner tier of brick, and the mortar placed between the rear and front tier of brick will be held by the dovetailed key, and thus make the mass solid. I do not purpose to use my brick in rear tier or wall of brick, but only in the front wall, in place of the pressed or ornamental brick now in use. Iron braces can also be inserted in the dovetailed keys and built into the common wall, thus holding the glass wall more securely.
In the drawings accompanying this specification similar letters denote similar parts.
Figure I represents a perspective view of my invention; Fig. II, a cross-section in the line a: m.
A is the wall of brick; B, depressed panel on front of brick, though this may be flush or depressed, and may carry in it ornaments of any variety; 0, groove on top or bottom; D, tongue on top or bottom; E, groove on end;
F, tongue on end; G, dovetailed-shaped key. The hollow brick may be filled with mortar, cement, or any substance, to give it solidity, if desired.
What I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. Bricks made of glass or other vitreous substance, the upper and lower and end faces of which are alternately tongued and grooved.
2. Bricks made of glass or other vitreous substance, the upper and lower and end faces of which are alternately tongued and grooved, in combination with dovetailed keys on the rear face.
3. Bricks made of glass or other vitreous substance, the upper and lower and end faces of which are alternately tongued and grooved, with dovetailed keys in the rear face, in combination with iron braces inserted in the dovetailed keys. substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
FRANCIS H. SHAW.
