SAW-SET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
Application filed February 14, 1905. Serial No. 245,606.
10 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHAN ENDRESEN, asubject of the King of Sweden and Norway, and a resident of Stavanger, Norway, have invented new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in saw-setting tools, more particularly of the plier type.
It has for its object, primarily, to effect the setting operation in a single transit over the saw-blade, a plurality or two teeth being reversely bent or set simultaneously step by step throughout the operation to its completion, and to do this in an expeditious, simple, and effective manner.
Said invention consists ofcertain structural features, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and particularly pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a side'elevation thereof. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an inverted view. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section, produced on a line passing through the adjustable punch Fig. 6 is a detached perspective view of said punch or depressor. Fig. 7 is a broken-away corresponding view of the jaw of the tool equipped with said punch or depressor, thelatter, however, beingremoved. Fig. Sis a detailed perspective view of the saw-guide, an adjunctive part of said tool.
In the carrying out of my invention I provide two plier-like joined or articulated together levers l 1, with the usual spring 2 held and interposed therebetween to effect the automatic separation or throwing apart of the jaws 1 1 thereof after relaxing the grasp upon said levers. Upon laterally-extending portions of the articulating pivot or pintle 3 of said levers are secured or fixed the lateral bars or arms 4 of the saw-guide 4 of rectangular frame-like outline, with its forward end cross-bar extending beyond the forward end of and conforming to one of the lever-jaws, said lateral bars having secured thereto near their inner ends a transverse rod or bar 4 passing intermediately of the jaws of said levers to properly position said guide thereon and hold it in the requisite relation to the forward ends of said jaws. Said guide has a slot 4" extending through its forward end crossbar and from side to side and penetrating the arms or lateral portions thereof to such extent as to receive and permit the placing therein of the saw within the plane of the action of the tooth deflecting or setting punches or depressors of the tool.
The lever-jaws 1 1 are arranged to cooperate to effect the saw-tooth-setting operation, one, 1, being preferably rectangular and having extending transversely therein near its extreme forward end preferably a corresponding depression or recess l to receive, so as to permit endwise or lateral movement, an adjustable or sliding punch or depressor 6, of peculiar construction, presently again referred to. With this recess or depression communicates an elongated slot 1, produced through the jaw 1 and passing through said slotis ascrew 5 fixed to and adjunctive of the punch or depressor 5, and upon said screw is fitted a thumb-nut 5 for aiding the adjustment of the punch or depressor. The punch or depressor 5, of general rectangular outline, has upon its face at one end a stepped offset 5", the broader surface of which, 5, provides a rest for a saw-tooth, while the narrow lateral ledge or extension 5" thereof forms a stop for said tooth, its right-lined edge resting thereagainst, as in performing the setting operation. It will be noted that by moving or adjusting said punch either toward or.
away from the plane of action of the opposite lever-jaw saw-teeth of varying intervals apart may be acted upon or set, as desired.
The lever-jaw 1 is preferably of parrotbill-like contour in general outline, the same being equipped with a right-lined steel face or punch 6, by the action of which as compression is exerted upon the two levers the saw-tooth opposed thereto will be laterally bent or deflected in one direction, while the offset surface 5 of the punch 5 will correspondingly deflect or bend the successive sawtooth in the opposite direction through the reversely-exerted pressure therefrom, as will be apparent.
The amount of lateral deflection or set to be imparted to the saw-teeth may be varied or gaged by the suitable manipulation of a gage-screw 6, fitted to work in a screw-thread in one of the levers l 1 and engaging the opposite or companion lever, a jam-nut 6 being applied to said screw and bearing upon the screw-equipped lever to fix said screw, thus providing for limiting or controlling the relative movement of the lever-jaws equipped with the tooth-setting punches as required to effect that purpose.
From the foregoing it will be noted that by means of my tool I am enabled to effect the setting of all the teeth of a saw at one operation or once going over the same, as will be appreciated, thus obviating the reverse passing of the tool over the saw, as where the teeth are set from opposite sides of the sawblade requiring the passing thereover twice.
Latitude is allowed as to details herein as circumstances suggest without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim 1. A tool of the character described, comprising a setting block or punch having a stepped member, with one edge thereof effectsitely to the aforesaid lateral engagement of the first-referred-to tooth.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J OHAN ENDRESEN.
