Description

t faire @simi "ffii-' i,
Letters Patent No. 79,052,1ated June 23,1868.
Y IMPROVEMENT IN OARPENTERS" GAUGB'S'.
like flgeml eremita it time Estima ymmt mit making tart nf tip:4 same.
fr0 ALL WHoM-'I'r MAY GONCERN;
'Be it known that I, A. H. BLASDELL ,-of Newton Corners, in t-he county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Carpenters Gauge 5 and I dorhereby declare thatythe following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionthereof,`which willy enable othersskilled in theart to make. and use the same, reference being had to'the'accoinpanying drawings, forming part of this specieation.
i Figures 1, 2, and `3 represent inverted plan views of my"impro ved carpenters' gauge.
Figure 4 is a longitudinalsectionof the same, taken on the plane ofthe line a: x, iigul;
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
y Y This invention relateefto 5a new carpenters gauge foidrawing marks parallel to thefstraight or curved edge of aboard or other article,and the .invention consists in the use ofvV-shaped links or lingers, pivoted to a sliding bleek, said links being by means'of rods connected with a beam, that is pivoted` to another fixed but adjustable block. i i
T he ends of these lingers forni the'edge of the4 gauge, and `they will, when` the gaugeis drawn along the curved edge of a board, always adjust themselves, by swinging around their pivot-pins, so aste keep the marking-point the required 4distance from-the boards edge.
.A, in tlie drawing, represents the bar or rod of a carpenters gauge. Near one end of the same is formed thereon a marking-point, a, asshown.
B is a block sliding on A; itreunhe clamped thereon by means of a set-screw, b, as shown.
C is 'another block, sliding on' the rod A, between the pointa'and the slide B. A rod, D, projects from the block C towards and through the lblock B, and can be clamped by means of a set-screw, c, fitted in :4 as shown, so that if B is clamped by means f the screwv 6,. C can also be clamped `by means of the screw c, 4 On the under face of the block G arepiroted two V-sh'aped lingers, E E, by means ol pins d, as shown, the inner ends of these ngers being, by means of rods e, connected with the ends of a bar,f, that is at its middle pivoted by. means of alpin, g,rto the block B,`as shown. Q
. When the device is to be used as a` gauge for straight-edgedboards, as in fig. 3, the block C had better be f clamped by means of the screw e, `andcanv then be used on either side, as on the upper side of the-rbd A, marking-pins, fr h, rare'secured, as shown.
When used on curved edgesLas in gs. 1 and 2, the block C should 'be left free te slide, while B is-xed'. VThe four ends of' the two ngers E will always be in contact with the edge of the board, and will thereby insure that the rod is held at right angles to theedge, and asthey turn on their'pivots, with their inner ends forward,
on concave edges, they will cause theY block C to slide backwards, and withtheir outerends forward on convex curves, they will cause the block G to 'move forward, and as they are previously properly adjustedg, they will in this manner always keep the point a the required' distance'from the edge.
To set the block C at the required 'distance from Ythe point a,'the -screw b is turned so as to release the block B, when the two blocks, B` and C, are byone movementadjusted nearer to or farther from the'saidpoint and clamped by means ofthe screwvb. i
l I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentv y I 4 The ngers E E, pivoted' on the sliding block Cand operating so that their four ends will always remain in contact with a eurved or straight edge, Vsubstitutially as -berein shownand described. i
Witnesses z` F. A. Porras, S. 4W. Taow'eames.
