THOMAS-W. oRRALL, OF NEW YORI N. Y.
BUILDING BRICK OR BLOCK AND FACING THEREFOR.
SPEGIFI TION formingpa rt of Letters Patent No. 771,520, dated October 4, 1904:.
pplication filed November 11, 1903. Serial No. 180,646. (No model.)
To all whom it may 0 rwern':
Be it known that I, TH MAS W. WORRALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the comity of New York and State of New Yorkjhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Building Bricks or Blocks and Facings Therefor, of which the following i' a specification, such as will enable those ki e the art to which it appertains to make and the same. v
This invention relates t building bricks or blocks and facings therefor, and particularly to building bricks or blocks made of clay, concrete, or any other suitable material capable of being molded into the desired form; and the invention consists in bricks or blocks of this class of novel form whereby such bricks or blocks may be locked together in layers and whereby a facing of any suitable material may be secured thereto, a further object being to provide a facing for bricks or blocks of the class specified composed of tiling or similar material molded into the required form and adapted to be locked to said bricks or llilocks after they have been placed in the we I The invention fully disclosed in the 'following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a brick or block made according to my nvention and showing a part of a facing nnected therewith; Fig. 2,.a front v1 ereof; Fig. 3, a section on the line 0 of Fig. 2 with the facing removed,
and Fig. 4 an end view of the facing shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the practice of my invention I provide a brick or block a, composed of any suitable material capable of being molded into the required form, and this brick or block is provided in the top, side, and end'portions thereof with vertically-arranged recesses 5, two of which are shown in each side and one in one end thereof. The recesses Z) extend downwardly approximately to the horizontal ccntral plane of the brick or block, and these recesses are preferably circular in crosssection, and formed in the sides and ends of the bricks or blocks are vertical slots or openings 5*, which communicate with the recesses 12 and which are wider at the top than at the bottom, as shown at 6 the top portions of said slots or openings being equal in width to the diameter of the recesses 12, While the bottom portions thereof are less in width or transverse section than the diameter of said recesses.
By means of this construction contiguous bricks placed in a wall may be locked together by means of cement or other keys, the recesses and slots or openings being so formed in the contiguous bricks that the said slots or openings will register. The chief object, however, in making the said bricks or blocks in the mannerdescribed is-to provide means forsecuringafacing thereto, and in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings I have shown at 0 a facing composed of terra cotta or any other suitable material'capable of being molded into the required form, and this facing is provided with one or more keys 0 according to the length of the facing and the brick or block. The key 0 consists of a spherical knob connected with the facing c by a neck 0 and in practice the said key or keys are placed at the longitudif nal center of the facing in the form of construction shown, and all that is necessary to connect the facing with a brick or block is to hold the facing so that the key or keys may be forced backwardly into the opening or openingsb in the side or end of the brick or block, after which the facing may be lowered and the key or keys will drop down into the recess or recesses b and the facing will be securely locked to the brick or block.
If desired, cement may be used between the facing and the brick or block and also to fill the recess or recesses and the slots or openings Z2 and 72 and the facing may thus be securely connected with the brick or block.
In the form of construction shown the brick or block is provided in one side or one end with vertically-arranged grooves or recesses (Z, any desired number of which may be provided and in which cement may be placed, this cement being placed between the various bricks or blocks in a wall and alsobetween the facing and the various bricks or blocks,
11 these grooves or recesses may be formed all the sides and ends of the bricks or blocks, desired.
It will be apparent that when a wall composed of bricks or blocks similar to that herein described has been finished the facing or facings 0 may be placed in position in the same manner as herein shown and described, and these facings may correspond in dimensions with one of said bricks or blocks, or a single casing may cover several bricks or blocks.
The facing or facings may also be placed in position when the wall is being constructed, if desired, and my invention is is no way limited to the size or dimensions of the bricks or blocks nor the size or dimensions of the facing or facings, and the facing or facings may be given any desired shape or configuration or ornamentation on their outer side.
The brick or block shown in the drawings is provided with the recesses I) and the corresponding slots or openings 6 and b in two sides and one end thereof; but both ends may be similarly provided, and when thus constructed all the contiguous bricks or blocks in a single layer may be locked together, and this arrangement also facilitates the placing of the bricks or blocks at the corners of a building and the breaking of joints in the separate layers; but it will be apparent that for the purpose of securing the facing or facings to bricks or blocks of this class only one side thereof may be provided with the recesses b and slots or openings 6 and b in bricks or blocks not used at the corners of a building or the corners of a wall, and corner bricks or blocks may be made so as to fill the requirements in such cases; but where all the bricks or blocks are provided in each side and end with the recesses b and side slots or openings 5 and b", communicating therewith, the bricks or blocks -in separate layers may be locked together,
and facing or facings 0 may be applied in the manner described.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A building brick or block the top surface of which is provided adjacent to a side thereof with a vertically-arranged recess which extends downwardly intoflthe brick or block a predetermined distance, the side of the brick or block being also provided with a.verticallyarranged slot or opening communicating with said recess and wider at the top than at the bottom, and a facing provided with a key comprising a knob or head connected with said facing by a neck, said knob or head being adapted to be inserted into said recess through the top portion of said slot or opening and to be dropped into the bottom portion of said recess, substantially as shown and described. 2. A building brick or block, the top surface of which is provided near the sides and ends thereof with vertically-arranged recesses and vertically-arranged slots or openings formed in the sides and ends and communicating with said recesses, said slots or openings being wider at the top than at the bottom and a facing provided with a key or keys comprising knobs or heads connected with said facings by necks, said knobs or heads being adapted to be forced backwardly into said recesses through the enlarged upper portions of said slots or openings, substantially as shown and described.
3. Abuilding brick or block, the top surface of which is provided near a side thereof with a vertically-arranged recess, said side being provided with a vertically-arranged slot or opening communicating therewlth, and a facing provided with a key adapted to be inserted into said recess through the top portion of said slot or opening and to drop into the bottom portion of said recess, substantially as shown and described.
4:. A building brick or block and a facing therefor, one of said parts being provided in one of the faces thereof and adjacentto another face thereof'with a recess parallel with the last named face and extending partially through said part, said last-named face being also provided with a slot which communicates with said recess throughout its length and is of less dimensions in transverse section than said recess except at the end thereof adjacent to the first-named face of said part where it is of the same dimension in transverse section as said recess; and the other part being provided with a key comprising a knob or head connected therewith by a neck, said knob or head being adapted to be passed backwardly 'into said recess through the enlarged end portion of said slot, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 9th day of November, 1903.
