SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 770,597, dated September 20, 1904.

To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Door or Window Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to provide an absolutely secure look by which to fasten doors, windows, and the like against entry from one side, the purpose being in practice to place the lock on the inside of the door or window, so as to lock the same against opening from the outside.
This specification is an exact description of one example of my invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, which show the invention adapted as a sash-lock and which form a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the lock open. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the body members of the lock, and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the key.
The body of the device comprises two sections a and b, fastened, respectively, to the parts to be lockedfor example, the meetingrails of two window-sashes. These parts are formed, preferably, of metal cast in hollow form, as illustrated in the drawings. When the lock is active, the said sections of the body lie snugly against each other.
Mounted on one section of the body, as here shown, the sectiona is a catch 0, which is of essentially U-shaped form, its side arms being pivoted to the sides of the section a, as indicated at 0, and its middle arm extending transversely and being adapted to lie against arounding surface 6 on the section b, as shown in Fig. 2, and by this arrangement the parts a and I; may be forced tightly together. The catch 0 is preferably provided with a knob 0 which facilitates its operation, and the said catch when inactive assumes the position shown in Fig. 8.
The catch. 0 is formed (see Fig. 4) with a cavity c in one of its side arms, this cavity having a large bore opening at the inner side of the arm and a small bore opening at the outer side thereof, and through thecavity extends the lock-pin cl, which may play loosely in the cavity and has at its outer end a knob d, facilitating the manipulation of the pin, and at the opposite end an enlargement (P, which is adapted to fit easily in the cavity 0 so as to prevent the entire disengagement of the pin from the catch. The section 6, with which the catch 0 engages, has transverse. openings t therein, which are alined with the cavity 0 when the catch is active and through which openings the pin d is passed to lock the catch in place. If desired, the arm of the catch opposite the arm bearing the cavity 0 maybe orificed or notched, as indicated at 0 to receive the extremity d of the pin (Z, and, if desired, a knob 0 may be cast or otherwise formed on this arm of the catch, so as to present in connection with the knob d a symmetrical appearance. It will be observed that by means of this pin the catch may be locked in active position,and when it is desired to release the catch it is only necessary to withdraw the pin, as shown in Fig. 3, and throw the catch backward, the pin meanwhile retaining its connection with the arm, so as to prevent the loss of the pin.
For the purpose of holding the pin in active position a key (2 is provided, this key being mountedto slide in the section a-which is to say, the section carrying the catch-and being movable into the section bto engage the walls of a notch or reduced portion 0Z formed in the pin (Z, and when the key is in this inward position it is clear that the pin cannot be removed. The key has its outer end projecting beyond the section a and provided with a knob e or other means for facilitating the operation of the key.
The manner of using and operating the lock will be apparent to persons skilled in the art.
It will be observed that by means of this invention the window, door, or other part may be securely locked and that it will be quite impossible for any one to open the same from the outside Further, to persons not acquainted. with the lock it is a matter'of some diflionlty to open it even from the inside,
since the key (2 must first be withdrawn and then the pin d, and owing to the presence of the different knobs d, 0", 0 and 0 considerable confusion will be created for the stranger attempting to operate the lock.
Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention may be re.- sorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the intent of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A lock, comprising a body in two sections, a catch mounted on one and adapted to engage the other, a pin for locking the catch, and a key for locking the pin.
2. A look, comprising two body-sections, a
catch mounted on one and adapted to engage the other, a pin for holding the catch in active position, and a key movable transversely to the pin and adapted to engage a shoulder thereon.
3. A look, comprising a body in two sections, a catch mounted on one and adapted to engage the other, a lock-pin movably carried by the catch and adapted to engage the secondnamed section of the body, and a key movably mounted in the first-named section of the body and adapted to engage the pin when in active position, to hold the same removably in place.
