Description

PATBNTBD JAN. 14,1908. 1P. HQBLBYER. SASH FASTBNER.
APPLICATION FILED APRL4, 1907.
wi/f weooeo "UNI ED sTATns PATENT OFFICE. l
FREDERIO H. BLEYER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SASHsFASTENER.
Application filed April 4.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnnnnnro H. BLEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in fasteners for window sashes, and consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive fastener of this character, which will securely lock the two window sashes in either their closed or opened position, and which cannot be operated from the outside of the window.
The above and other objects, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, are accomplished by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which.-
Figure 1 is a view showing the application of my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing the fastener in its locked position; and Fig. 3 is a similar View, showing the fastener in its released or unlocked position.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 and 2 denote the upper and lower verticallysliding sashes of a window, or the like, and 3 denotes my improved fastener. The latter is preferably mounted upon the outer face of one of the side bars of the lower sash 2, and comprises a sliding bolt 4 and a combined guide and attaching plate 5. The bolt 4, which is preferably cylindrical, projects through and slides in a transverse opening in the sash 2, and is adapted to have its outer ends projected into one or more seats or sockets 6 formed in the side bar of the sash 1, said sockets being lined with metal, as shown.
The inner end 7 of the bolt 4 is'reduced and projects through a centrallydisposed opening 8 formed in the attaching plate or holder 5, which latter is preferably in the form of a casting, as shown. The plate or holder 5 is attached. to the sash 2 by screws or the like 9 passed through apertured lugs 10, andv its forwardly-projecting portion is recessed, as

shown at 11, to provide upper and lower hook-shaped arms 12. The lower arm 12 is formed with a vertically-extending notch or recess 13 which is in line with the centrallydisposed opening 8, through which the inner end 7 of the bolt 4 projects. Said end 7 has pivoted in its bifurcated portions a lever arm 14 formed at its outer end with a transverse head 15. This arm or lever 14 serves as a handle to slide the bolt 4 and also to lock it against inward movement when its outer end is engaged with one of the sockets or seats 6.
The operation of the invention will be readily understood upon reference to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. When the bolt 4 is moved outwardly, so that its outer end engages one of the notches 6, and the swinging arm 14 projects partly into the opening 8 in the holder 5 and its transverse head 15 is seated in the hook arm 12, it will be seen that the bolt will be effectively held in projected position; In order to release the bolt 4 and unlock the two sashes, the arm 14 is swung upwardly to ahorizontal position and then pulled inwardly to move the bolt 4 inwardly and out of the socket 6. When the arm 14 is released, it drops into the notch or recess 13 in the arm 12, as shown in Fig. 1. It will be seen that the sashes may thus be locked in their closed position, or in a partially open position, to allow for ventilation, and that it will be impossible for the fastener to be operated by anyone upon the outside.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claims.
j Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors-Patent is:
l 1. A fastener of the character described comprising a holder having a keeper hook,
a bolt slid able in said holder, and a locking arm pivoted at one of its ends to said bolt and having a portion at its opposite end to engage said keeper hook, substantially as described.
2. The combination with sliding sashes, one having a transverse opening and the other a socket or seat, a holder or attaching 1 plate upon one of said sashes and recessed to l provide a hook arm. having a notch therein, l a bolt slidable in the opening in one of said an opening of smaller diameter than the opening in the sash and registering therewith, whereby the inward movement of the bolt is limited by the shoulder abutting against the walls of said opening, and means for locking said bolt in projected position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set sashes, and a locking arm pivoted to said bolt and having a head upon one of its ends toengage the hook arm of said holder, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination with sliding sashes, one having an opening extending transversely therethrough, and the other a socket, of a my hand in presence of two subscribing bolt slidable in said opening and having one witnesses.
end reduced to form a shoulder, an operating FREDERIU H. BLEYER. lever connected with. said reduced end, a Witnesses: holder secured upon the sash having the; OSCAR J. KAHN,
opening therethrough, said holder having;
