Description

PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH NOGK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
LOCK-BOLT FOR SHUTTERS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 7,480, dated `July 2, 1850.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH Nook, of the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vindow-Shutter Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe the construction and operation of the same. y
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view. A plates which are screwed on the shutters, B guards over the bolt which are fastened to the plates in the usual manner. C bolt. Fig. 2 bolt having a notch in the underside in which spring D, F ig. 3, catches when the bolt is shoved in. Fig. 3 side section representing the manner of arranging the springs and using the fastening. A plates, B guards, C bolt, D'spring which catches in notch H, G key, E spring which presses the bolt up to the guard B. Fig. 4 C bolt, F spring which is'fastened to the guard B by means of a screw represented in the end and which spring catches in the notch represented in the edge of the bolt C.
Having thus fully described the construe tion of my improved shutter fastening, I will now proceed to describe the operation of the same. As the bolt C is shoved in, the springs D and F catch in their respective notches inthe bolt. When I desire to remove the bolt for the purpose of opening the shutters I place the key in the key hole (Fig. l) and turn it backward or to the deft. lhen the end of the point N presses down on the end of spring D-(which spring is beveled oi' at the end)-and at the same time the side of N near the shaft of the key, comes in contact with the spring F throwing both springs clear from the bolt O. The bolt can then be moved back until it comes in contact with the key at the outer edge of the slot-represented in the boltwhen the key must be removed and the bolt can then be moved back until it comes in contact with the stud M which is far enough` to admit the shutter to be opened.
The object of the arrangement by which the key must be removed from the key-hole, before the bolt can be removed and the shutters opened, is to prevent persons from opening who do not understand it, although they may have a key that will detach the springs fro-m the bolt, thereby rendering it more safe against burglars.
Having thus fully described the construction and operation of my improved window shutter fastening, what I claim thereinas new and of my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The bolt having a slot through which the key passes, which will admit the bolt to be moved back sufficiently far to prevent the spring catches from catching in the notches in the bolt in combination with a key hole in the guard, which renders it necessary to remove the key before the shutters can be opened substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
