Description

No. 728,195- PATENTED MAY 19, 1903.
T. H. BRADY. SECTIONAL COVER FOR BOXES.
N0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented May 19,1903.
PATENT O FICE.
SECTIONAL CQVER FOR BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 728,195, dated May 19, 1903. Application filed January 12,1903. Serial No. 138,590. (No modeLl To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. BRADY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Covers for Boxes, &c., of which the following is a specification,
There are many instances when it is convenient to have the cover of a box or other receptacle made, in sections, so that access may be had to one part of the receptacle without removing the whole cover. This is particularly true with regard to boxes'equipped with electrical apparatus-such, forinstance, as a multifuse-boxwhen if the whole cover is raised the entire circuit would be broken.
I am aware that boxes have been provided with covers of this kind; and my invention relates particularly to means for manipulating a sectional cover of the kind above mentioned, and it is applicable to a sectional cover wherever used.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box and its cover in which my invention is embodied. Fig. 2 is a top view of the cover. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line a; :20 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the handle.
a denotes a box-in this case a fuse-box for use in an electrical circuit. 19 is the cover therefor. The cover is made in three sections 10 ll 12, each section carrying one member of an electrical switch, which cooperates with its corresponding member located in the box. The centralsection 11 has flanges 13 14, which underlie the side sections 10 12. Thus when the central section is raised the two side sections are raised with it. It is also provided with a handle 15, pivotally mounted thereon and having lugs 16 17 on its lower side. Each of the side sections ofthe cover along the edges next the central section is provided with lugs 18 19. Thelugs 16 17 on the handle are so spaced that when the handle is turned across the central section to the position shown in dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 3 they will engage the lugs 18 19 and clamp the side sections firmly to the central section, so that the cover may be operated as one piece and insuring the proper interengagement of the cooperating parts on the cover and the box. When the handle is turned in the position shown in full linesin Figs. 2 and 3, either side section can be raised independently of either of the other sections.
As stated above, I do not wish to limit myself to the application of this device to boxes or receptacles of any particular kind.
I claim as my invention- In a device of the kind described the combination of a box, a cover for said box consisting of several hinged sections, a pivoted handle on one of said sections, means on the other sections cooperating with said handle whereby any singlesection maybe opened separately, or by the 'turning'of the handle so as to engage the cooperating means, all the sections can be opened simultaneously.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS H. BRADY.
