. To all whom it may concern.-

Be it knownthat I, GERHARD P. HELMERS, a citizen of the United States, residingat Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Alarm Hand-Bags, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is in the nature of an alarm especially adapted to be attached to a satchel or hand bag such as carried by ladies, but applicable to all forms of receptacles which are provided with hinged aws or doors to be opened to afford access to the interior.

The prime object of the invention is to provide means to prevent the surreptitious opening of a receptacle of the character specified without giving an audible alarm, and to provide means whereby the alarm mechanism may be rendered inoperative when desired.

With this object in view the invention. consists of the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of the component parts of mechanism of the character specified, which will be hereinafter fully described and afterward specifically claimed.

In order that the construction and operation thereof may be readily comprehended,

teferring specifically to the drawings 6 indicates a bag or a satchel or the like, provided with hinged mouth bars 7, 8, connected by the usual pintles 9 and provided with the usual handle 10. A battery 11 of any suitable type is located suitably in the bag, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and indicated diagrammatically in Fig. 4, from one pole of which extends awire 12 to an alarm bell 18 from whence extends a Wire 14: to a plate 15. Adjacent to the plate 15 is a similar plate 16 from which extends a wire 17 to a bar 18 on top of the handle 10 which is connected by a wire 19 to a bar 20 under the handle. From .the opposite end of the bar 20 extends a wire 21 to the other pole of the battery, a switch 22 being insorted in this Wire to break the circuit when desired.

The bell 13 shown in Fig. 4, is protected by inclosing it in a perforated box 23, shown in F ig. 1.

1V hen the mouth of the bag or satchel is closed, the circuit is broken, but when an attempt is made to open the satchel, a switch or contact bar 24, rigidly secured to one of the mouth bars and projecting down below the pintle, passes over upon the plates 15 and 1G and closes the electric circuit through said plates, thus sounding the alarm'bell 13. This alarm will sound and warn the owner of the bag of an attempt to open it whether the bag is carried, or not, the current passing from bar 18 to bar 20 through parts of the hand, so that due warning will be given whether the alarm by the bell is heard or not.

While the construction and arrangement of the component parts of the invention have been specifically described, it will be obvious that slight changes and variations may be made therein, Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured. by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A portable closable bag'provided with hinged mouth bars, an alarm and a battery in a normally open circuit inclosed in said bag, and means connected to one of said mouth bars and operated thereby for closing said circuit and retaining it closed while said mouth bars are separatedand during their entire opening movement, and an additional means within the bag for breaking the circuit to prevent the ringing of the alarm when the bag is opened.

2. A portable closable bag provided with hinged mouth bars, an alarm and battery in a normally open circuit having contact plates spaced apart secured upon the interior of said bag adjacent the hinge of the mouth bars, an extension attached to one of said mouth bars'and adapted to be operated thereby to engage said contact plates When said mouth bars are separated, and a switch in said circuit for controlling the ringing of the alarm.

3. A portable closable bag provided With hinged mouth bars and a handle, an alarm in said bag, separated plates fixed to said handle, means in said bag connected in a normally open circuit with said alarm and 10 separated plates, and means connected to one of said mouth bars for closing said circuit and retaining it closed when said mouth bars are separated.
