Description

(No ModalJ' s. WINTERS. SLEEPING BAG.
(Application filed Ian 24, 189B.)
Patented Nov. l, I898.v
THE Nonms Pzrzns cu. PHOWLITHO msmncTcN, n. c.
IN VE N TOR UNITED STATES ATENT FFI SARAH WINTERS, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
SLEEPING-BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,545, dated November 1, 1898.
Application filed March 24, 1898. Serial No. 674,967. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, SARAH WINTERS, of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented a new and Improved Sleeping-Bag, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is a casing constructed of cloth and eider-down, the purpose of which is to provide a cover for persons sleeping in arctic climates, and it is characterized by a fabrication with an inner and outer layer of cloth between which the eider-down is quilted, the interior of the bag being provided with a pillow and the bag being formed with flaps having securing devices, so that the perso may be completely inclosed.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of my invention, while the claim defines the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the invention with parts adjusted to receive the person. Fig. 2 is a side View of the device, showing it closed and the flaps fastened. Fig. 3
is a longitudinal section with the pillow omitted, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
The bag is constructed with the outer covering of cloth a and the inner covering 1) sewed together, as shown best in Fig. 4, by stitches running through the coverings, forming longitudinally-elongated pockets wherein the eider-down o is inclosed. The foot of the bag is provided with an end section d, by which it is closed and the construction of which is the same as that of the body of the bag. The bag has its lower portion closed to receive the legs of the person and its upper portion opened to form two flaps e and f, the edges of which are provided with buttons and buttonholes, so that they may be brought together and the bag closed completely,as sho wn in Figs. 2 and 3. The flap e is provided with a pillow g, removably attached, and the interior of the bag isprovided with pockets h. The bag being thus constructed may be very easily rolled into a compact form and owing to its slight weight may be carried readily on the pack of a traveler.
The construction of the bag renders it practically waterproof and also buoyant.
In using the device the person enters the bag and the flaps e and f are buttoned together. This completely incloses the person, who may be supplied with air through crevices between the flaps.
The pillow g is not essential, because the head of the bag may be readily rested on any raised object and the yielding character of the bag will comfortably support the head of the person.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A sleeping-bag having a main portion, the lower portion of which is closed for the reception of the legs of the person, and the upper portion of which is provided with two flaps having fastening devices by which their edges may be joined together, a pillow secured to the inner surface of one flap and adapted to be inclosed within the bag, and a foot-section secured to and closing the lower end of the bag.
SARAH WINTERS.
