DOUBLE COMPARTMENT SLEEPING BAG WITH BUILT IN MATTRESS Filed Oct. 22, 1965 @Troie/vers United States Patent O 3,341,869 DOUBLE COMPARTMENT SLEEPING BAG WITH BUILT IN MATTRESS Willard S. Whitman, St. Louis, Mo., assignor to H.
Wenzel Tent & Duck Co., St. Louis, Mo., a corporation of Missouri Filed Oct. 22, 1965, Ser. No. 501,886 3 Claims. (Cl. 5-343) ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE A reversible sleeping bag for use in warm or cold weather usable by simply turning the sleeping bag over for selective use. A mattress is attached to lthe bag in an intermediate position between a cold weather insulation cover and warm weather insulation with separate sleeping compartments on both sides of the mattress between the mattres and the appropriate cover. In use the appropriate bottom cover provides additional ground insulation and resiliency for the user.
In the past various types of sleeping bags have been provided which are `adaptable for hot or cold weather, and which use liners or inserts to accomplish this purpose. Further, sleeping bags have been provided with detachable mattresses or the like to provide a soft layer upon which to sleep. Such `sleeping ybags require tting together the parts which can be kept separately yand require keeping these parts straight. Further, these sleeping bags are somewhat bulky due to the provision of several different types of component parts.
By means of this invention there has been provided a reversible sleeping bag which is integral in structure and which can be used for either warm or cold weather by simply Iturning the bag to one side or the other. A foam mattress is built into the sleeping bag between a warm weather covering and a cold weather covering. The warm weather covering uses light insulation and provides a sleeping compartment between the warm weather covering and the mattress, while on the opposite side a cold weather covering is employed of quite a bit heavier insulation, which, for purpose of example, may be three times as heavy. Likewise, a sleeping compartment is provided between the cold weather covering and the mattress, and the user can choose the sleeping compartment dependent upon the weather prevailing. This sleeping bag is very simply constructed through lthe use of the light insulation warm weather covering and the heavy insulation cold weather covering between which the foamed mattress is sandwiched. Further, the covering that is not ybeing employed underlies the foam mattress and provides an extra degree of resiliency so that it serves a triple function as an underlying covering; a mattress reinforcement; and additional insulation on the bottom while sleeping either in the warm weather compartment or the cold weather compartment.
The sleeping bag is very simply used without the requirement of `any interiitting of parts, and, therefore, simplicity is achieved through its construction. It is rugged and relatively inexpensive in cost. The two compartments and the foam mattress `are used commonly in this invention.
The above features are objects of this invention and further objects will appear in the detailed description which follows and will be otherwise yapparent to those skilled in the art.
For the purpose of illustration of this invention, there is shown in the accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment. It is to be understood that these drawings, however, are for the purpose of illustration `only and that the invention is not limited thereto.
In the drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a pictorial view of the sleeping bag;
FIGURE 2 is a view similar to FIGURE l but showing the top warm weather 'compartment opened to present the sleeping bag ready for use, Ialso showing in dotted lines the cold weather compartment which would be ready for use if so desired upon turning the sleeping bag bottomside up;
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged view in section taken on the line 3-3 of FIGURE l showing the construction of the top warm weather layer, the foam rubber mattress, and the bottom cold weather layer; and
FIGURE 4 is 'a view in section taken similarly to FIG- URE 3 but showing the sleeping -bag reversed with the cold weather covering presented for use.
Referring n-ow to the drawings, the sleeping bag is generally indicated by the yreference numeral 10. As shown in FIGURES 2, 3 and 4, it is comprised of a top warm weather compartment 12, an intermediate mattress 14, and a bottom cold weather compartment 16. A zipper 18 closes together the coverings of the sleeping bag when not in use,
'or when the user is occupying it.
As more fully shown in FIGURE 3, the warm weather compart-ment is bonded by the mattress and a warm weather -cover comprised of insulation Z0, which is of light weight construction. This insulation may be of any desired type, as will be well understood in the art. The warm weather insulation 20 is covered by the outer fabric covering 22 land inside lining 24. It is noted that the bottom of the sleeping bag, as shown in FIGURE 3, has the warm weather and cold weather covers extending beyond the mattress, which provides for a space for stitching and also provides overlying protection for the feet of the user.
The mattress 14 is comprised of foam rubber, or other type of resilient mattress material, which is overlaid by a lining 26 and a lining 28. The cold weather compartment 16 is bounded by the mattress and a cold weather cover comprised of heavy weight cold weather insulation 30 covered by an outer fabric covering 32 and inside lining 34.
The outer covering and inside lining covering the warm weather insulation and the outer covering and inside lining covering the cold weather insulation are stitched together by turning them backwards against the extension of the linings beyond the mattress 14. This stitching is indicated through three rows of stitchings bearing the reference numeral 36. This stitching extends from the bottom or" the bag along the side of the bag opposite the Zipper.
USE
The user of the sleeping bag can very simply employ the sleeping bag for any desired use for cold or warm weather. The bag is shown prepared for warm weather use in FIGURE 2, where the zipper 18 has been partially withdrawn to pull back the warm weather cover. The bag is then ready for use by the user who crawls into warm weather compartment defined between the warm weather cover and the mattress 14. In this position the mattress is reinforced by the cold weather covering 16, which underlies it and provides additional mattress protection, and insulation.
The mattress member 14, which is built into the sleeping bag, serves to provide a unitary weather protection element and mattress combination. The mattress member, with the stitching connecting the warm weather covering and the cold weather covering, eliminates any necessity of inserting and blowing up a -conventional air mattress, or inserting any other type of mattress, while insuring that the proper positional relationship is provided in the reversible sleeping bag of this invention, since there are no parts that need be connected or buttoned or inserted inside one another.
Should the weather turn cold, or the user desires more insulation protection, the sleeping bag is very simply turned over to the position shown in FIGURE 4. In this position the cold weather covering 16 overlies the mattress and the user will use the compartment dened between the cold weather covering and the mattress member 14. Here also the insulation covering not being employed serves to re-enforce the mattress to provide additional mattress protection, and insulation and warmth, because in this position the warm weather covering will underlie the mattress.
Various changes and modications may be made in this invention which will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art. Such changes and modifications are within the scope and teaching of this invention as dened by the claims appended hereto.
What is claimed is:
1. A reversible sleeping bag for selective use in warm weather and cold weather, said bag having a warm weather insulation cover on one side of the bag and a cold weather insulation cover on an opposite side of the bag, a mattress attached to the bag in an intermediate position between the warm weather and cold weather covers to define separate sleeping compartments on either side of the mattress, said bag being reversible such that each of the aforementioned covers can be selectively employed with the cover in the bottom position also providing additional insulation and resiliency for the human body.
2. The sleeping bag of claim 1 in which each of the warm weather and cold weather covers are protected by inner linings and outer fabric coverings which are connected at the bottom of the sleeping bag to a mattress lining, said mattress lining covering the mattress attached to the bag in an intermediate position between the warm weather` and cold weather covers to define separate sleeping compartments on either side of the mattress.
3. The sleeping bag of claim 2 in which the warm weather and cold weather covers extend beyond the bottom of the mattress to define a space between said covers for the lining connections.
