Description

(No Model.)
T. M. UNDERWOOD. HAIR TRIMMING SHEARS.
No. 512,767. Patented Jan. 16, 1894.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS M. UNDERWOOD, OF BALDWYN, MISSISSIPPL.
HAIR-TRIMMING SH EARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 5 12,767,dated January 16, 1894.
Application filed March 16, 1893- .To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS M; UNDER- WOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baldwyn, in the county of Lee and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hair-Trimming Shears, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class known as barbers appliances, and more particularly relates to a new and improved tool consisting of a combined and relative arrangement of shears and comb, whereby the operator can simultaneously gage the length of and cut the hair in a single operation.
My invention consists in an improvement upon the device shown in Letters Patent No. 482,857, which were issued to me on September 20, 1892, the object of my invention being to simplify the manner of attachment of the comb to the shears and thereby reduce the cost of manufacture and the risk of displacement of the appliance while in use.
Further objects andadvantages of my invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of shears with my improved comb attachment applied thereto in the op erative position. Fig. 2 is a detail view in perspective of the comb attachment, and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view.
Like letters of reference mark similar parts in the several figures of the drawings.
A indicates an ordinary pair of barbers shears of any usual or approved construction, and comprising the cuttingmembers or jaws a a, the latter being more pointed and slightly longer than its co-operating member, and both being provided with suitable handles and pivoted together at c by means of the ordinary pivot screw.
B designates an ordinary comb,in length approximately equal to that of the member a, to which it is attached. This comb is provided at its front end with a spring-clip j, provided with a series of spaced perforations k, which are adapted to receive the pointed end of the member a. The rear end of the comb is pro- Seriel No. 466,120- (No model.)
vided with a plate g, having at one edge an up-standing slotted arm h. A thumb-screw 41 engages a threaded socket Z in the edge of the member a, after extending through the slot m in the said slotted arm h.
It will be understood that, as the rear end of the comb is set by means of the slotted arm and set-screw, at different distances from the plane of the member a, the front end of said comb may be correspondingly adjusted by means of the perforations in the spring-clip in order that the parallelism between the comb and the shears may be preserved.
It will be understood that, as described in the above mentioned patent, the plate g and spring-clip j may be attached to an ordinary comb, but in the drawings I have shown such parts in connection with a metallic comb,
with which they are preferably formed integral.
From the above description it will be apparent that my improved comb attachment may be applied to any ordinary form of shears by simply providing the threaded socket for the reception of the thumb-screw, whereby the slotted arm, at the rear end of the comb, is held in place.
Having described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is- As a new article of manufacture, abarbers appliance comprising a comb provided at its front end with a perpendicularly-disposed clip having spaced perforations to receive the point of one of the members of a pair of shears and provided at its rear end upon one side with a perpendicularly-disposed slotted arm, and a thumb-screw engaging the slotted arm to lock the rear end of the comb to'the said member of the shears, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence oftwo witnesses.
THOMAS M. UNDERWOOD.
