Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. SPENCE and VIVA E. SPENCE, citizens of the United States, and residents of Underwood, in the county of Clark and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in shears and scissors; and the object of our invention is to provide a means whereby the blades are tensionally held together, insuring the cutting edges contacting at the cutting point at all times during the operation of the shears.
Another object is to provide a pair of shears or scissors with a spring carried by the shears pivot, which not only yieldingly holds the blades together, but provides an auxiliary blade that can be used to rip a seam or cut a buttonholeQ With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally pointed out in the appended claims, it being further understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1, shows a face view of a pair of shears constructed according to our invention disclosing the auxiliary knife in its ripping position. Fig. 2, shows a transverse sectional view disclosing the position of the outstanding flange as held against the edge of the connected blade, and Fig. 3, shows an enlarged detached detail of the auxiliary knife.
In our present invention we provide a pair of shears or scissors with a simply constructed knife having a spring end carried upon the pivot connecting the scissor blades in a manner insuring the cutting edges of the blades being properly held together during the cutting operation, while the knife can be set at right angles to the shear blades, the scissors then serving as handles by means of which the knife may be wielded for ripping purposes or in cutting buttonholes.
As usually constructed the blades of shears and scissors after having been used a considerable time wear loose, so that the cutting edges do not properly meet. In our invention the wear of the blades is taken up by means of a spring pressed nut, the spring employed serving a double function.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1, designates the member provided with the fin r loop, and 2, the member provided with the thumb loop. These two blade members are conventional in size, shape and material, each being providedv at a proper point with a pivot opening arranged to revolubly receive a pivot 3, which in the present instance is in the form of a bolt, as disclosed in Fig. 2. This bolt 3, carries a milled nut 4.
Pivotally held upon the pivot forming bolt 3, is an auxiliary knife 5, preferably made of tool steel, which has a fiat under surface, as shown in Fig. 3, from which is continued the tang 9, the tang and blade being connected by the recurved blade portion 7 as clearly disclosed in Fig. 2. This recurved portion 7 extends outward of the bottom face of the blade 5, and serves as a stop flange, being so located that when the knife 5, is carried at right angles to the blade 2, upon which the knife is pivotally held, the outstanding flange 7, will ride snug against the sharp edge of the scissors near the pivot portion to hold the knife in proper position. As disclosed, the tang 9, extends parallel to the base of the blade portion 5, both the blade and tang being traversed by a bolt opening arranged to snugly receive the bolt 3. The outstanding flange portion 7, is provided with an integral ear 8, shown in Fig. 3, which is arranged for co-action with a socket 10, as clearly disclosed in Fig. 1, so that when said auxiliary blade 5, is out of working position the same will be snugly held to its carrying blade 2, the blade in this position being held against any casual or accidental displacement. In Fig. 1, the position of the blade 5, when folded against the shear blade out of working position, is indicated in dotted lines. The tang 9, serves as a spring to normally hold the blades 1 and 2, yieldingly together so that the cutting edges of the blades will at all times meet at the cutting point, insuring a clear, sharp, cutting action. It is of course understood that the tension of the spring can be adjusted by means of the nut 4. lVhen it is desired to use the auxiliary blade 5, for ripping or cutting purposes, it is simply necessary to slightly loosen the milled nut 4t, carrying the blade at right angles, then readjust the nut to insure the blade being securely held in proper position. It is of course understood that these auxiliary blades can be made of various lengths.
A device constructed according to our invention is simple, inexpensive, and both durable and eiiicient in operation, and the adjustment of the auxiliary blade 5, into or out of working position may be effected with ease, accuracy and despatch.
Having thus described our said inven tion, what we claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In combination, a pair of shear blades each having a pivot opening, a bolt within said openings to pivotally connect said blades, a knife blade having its tang recurved and held parallel to the blade the recurved portion of the blade extending outward of the bottom face of its blade to serve as a stop flange, said blade and tang having registering openings engaged by said bolt, the bottom face of said blade working upon one of said shear blades, and a nut threaded upon said bolt to yieldingly clasp said shear and knife blades and tang, as and in the manner set forth.
2. In combination, a pair of shear blades each having a pivot opening, a bolt within said openings to pivotally connect said blades, a knife blade having its tang recur-ved and held parallel to the blade the recurved portion of the blade extending outward of the bottom face thereof to serve as a stop flange which has a part stamped out to form an ear, said blade and tang having registering openings engaged by said bolt, the bottom face of said blade working upon one of said shear blades, a nut threaded upon said bolt to yieldingly clasp said shear and knife blades and tang, the shear blade carrying said knife blade having a socket engaged at times by said ear, said outstanding flange arranged to lie against the edge of the adjacent blade when said knife blade is at right angles to the shear blade.
