To all whom it may concern..-
I Be it known that I, JOHN PARKINSON, a citizen of the UnitedSt'ates, residing in the city 1 and county of'Philadelphia, Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for the Manufacture of Car or other Wheels, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings. a
My invention consists of an apparatus for forging-car or other wheels, the same embodying dies, beds and heads of novel con-.
struction, and means for setting, gaging and guiding the Work as it progresses, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a front view of a portion of an apparatus for forging car wheels embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a partial side elevation and partial vertical section thereof on line a:, as, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section of another portion of the apparatus. Fig. 4. represents a plan View ofthe lower die shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents a section of a portion of the lower die Fig. 3, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 6 represents a vertical section of a portion of the apparatus employed for the first step of forging a car wheel embodying myinvention. Fig. 7 represents a vertical section of the die and portion of the head shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 8 and .9 represent front views of portions shown in Fig.6. Fig. 10 represents a view similar to that shown in Fig. 6, excepting that the head thereof is lower, and the blank in different position and condition. Fig. 11 represents a detached View of the gage and guide shownin Figs. 6, 9 and 10. Fig. 12 represents a view of the blank and the successive forms imparted to the same, including the shaped wheel.

Referring to the drawings:.-A, Figs. 1, 2 and 3 designates a hammer'which is properly guided on the frame B, and receives power in any suitable manner. t
0, Figs. 6, 9 and 10, designates a bed having mounted on the side above the fiat face D thereof, the guide roller E, carried in bearings on the gages H.
F designates a head which is located above the bed 0, and having a flat working face G. On the sides of the face D, are gages H for the purposes to be hereinafter explained.
J, Figs. 1 and 2 designates a head which is provided with a flange-forming recess K inthe center of its face L,- and below the same is the anvil-die M, which has a vertical recess N in the base of which is a flange-forming recess P. J on rnaled in brackets secured to the walls of the recess N, at or near the upper-end thereof is a roller Q, and at the front of the recess P, is a leg R, and a table S. The die M is adjustably held in a suitable bed T at the bottom of the frame B, and may be removed therefrom when desired.
U, Figs. 3, 4. and 5 designates a finishing die which has a recess Won its Working face, the same being of the shape of a portion of one side of a car wheel and above the same is a plunger or head X, having a work ng face Y which is of the shape of the pprtion or half of a car wheel. On the sides of the top of the die U are guide and holding pins Z, which may be placed against the periphery of the partially-formed wheel, as shown in Fig. 5, said pins being fitted in blocks A and held thereon by screws or bolts B, said blocks being vertically movable in openings 0 in the die, by which provision the pins may be applied in adjusted position and afterward raised, turned and moved as desired. Within the die U, is a plunger D which may be employed for removing the finished wheel if so desired.
The operation is as follows: A blank or cylindrical piece of metal, such as is shown at E, Fig. 12, is placed on the face Dof the bed 0, Fig. 6, and the head F operated so as to squeeze or work said blank and impart to it an approximately-perfect circular periphery. During this operation the blank is turned by a suitable bar F, shown in dotted lines Fig. 6, said blank revolving upon the roller E.
The blank or piece as worked, is now regages H, H, as shown in Figs. 8 and 10, after which it is removed and placed in the die M,
Fig. 1, in upright position, when the head J is operated, and owing to the recesses K and P, in the faces of said die and head, the shaped piece is properlyformed with aflauge on its side, as shown in Fig. 1, the descent of the head J being limited by stop pieces J on the top of the die M. Durin the operation of flange-forming, a bar G, see Fig. 2, is tested on the legR as afulcrum, and worked against the shaped piece so as to rotate the latter, it readily turning on the roller Q, and being thus moved true and steady. When the piece is placed in the die M, it is properly located by means of a pin H, which is passed through the side of the die and pressed against the side of the piece of metal. The flanged metal is removed from the die M, and prevented from dropping on the floor, owing to the table S, and then placed sidewise on the dieU and held thereon by the pins Z, when the head X is operated, and thus the final shape is imparted to the metal, converting the sameinto a wheel, The descent of the head X is limited by stcp pieces W, rising from the face of the the U; The opening for the axle may be formed in any suitable manner. The roller Q is mounted on brackets 2, which latter are connected with the die M at the rear or the recess N thereof, as has been stated, and they are provided as shown in Fig, 2, with two or more openings Q*, to receive the journals of the roller Q an thus provide for the adjustability of the latter, relatively tothe varying diameters of blanks placedhnsaid die. n k
It will be seen that the work is expeditiously accomplished and superior results are attained. It will alsh be seen that the several operations are centrally performed on the several parts of the apparatus, and thus the work will be true and uniform, without liability to be struck out of center, or to strain the adjacent portions or; the apparatus.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A device for manufacturing car wheels, consisting 'of a frame, a hammer movable in said frame, a bed with a roller mounted above the flat face thereof, a head with a flat workihg face, a die M with recesses N and P, jointly with the finishing die U, said parts being combined substantially as described.
