Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. HAGERTY, OF FARMINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,242, dated October 28, 1890.
Application filed February 7, 1890- Serial No. 339,620. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OELN M. HAGERTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farmington, in the county of Marion and State of Vest Virginia, have invented a new and useful Car-Coupler, (which has not been patented in any country,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in car-couplers; and the object of my improvement is to obtain a self-coupler on simple principles and having strength and durability. I attain these objects by a draw-head coupling bar and roller, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a coupler complete, excepting coupling-bar. Fig. 2 is the roller; Fig. 3, the coupling-bar, and Fig. 4 inner side View when coupled.
Draw-head a contains recess b for receiving coupling-bar e.
Draw-head a has an obtuse angle-shaped aperture 0 horizontally through draw-head, in which is placed roller cl, which, from the shape of aperture 0, can be shoved back and up.
Coupling-bar e is made with enlarged ends 9 9. When coupling-bar e is placed in recess 1), it is held in a horizontal position by roller d and draw-head a, so as to enter recess 1) in opposite draw-head a unaided. Back walls jj form back-stay for coupling-bar c. When coupling-bar e enters recess b, it shoves roller (I back, then up, so that enlarged end g passes under roller (1. Roller cl then drops down and forward, aided by slant f,- bottom of aperture 0, and thus prevents coupling-bar e from leaving recess 1) until roller 01 is displaced, which is done by chains 2' i, attached to each end of roller d and to rod h h, the top 7c over back part of recess 1) holds coupling-bar e in horizontal position when roller (1 is displaced.
Draw-head a is made with aperture n, in which a pin, may be used when coupling to an ordinary link-and-pin draw-head.
Draw-head a is made with aperture t, in which draw-bar r is secured. Aperture t may be made oblong, so that draw-head a can be placed high or low on cars of diflierent heights, so that all draw-heads can be placed on same level. Draw-head a may also be made for double draw-bars 0 0, which is secured by bar through aperture 1).
Coupling-bar a may be made hollow, as indicated by dotted lines q q, so that it can be used in coupling to an ordinary draw-head with pin.
ll Z are washers, and m a key.
All the above are substantially as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A draw-head provided with the series of slots 19 p p and the oblong recess t, for the purpose of elevating and lowering the same, substantially as described.
2. The wedge-catch consisting of the combination of draw-head a, roller d, and coupling-bar c, with angled shoulders g, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the draw-head provided with the obtuse-angled guide-slots c, the roller cl, and the coupling-bar c, all substant-ially as described.
JOHN M. I-IAGERTY.
