CAR COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,264, dated October 13, 1903.
Application filed October 27. 1902. Renewed July 28, 1903. Serial No. 167,357. (No model.)

Be it known that 1, PAUL LUTHER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in car-couplings, and more especially to couplings for street-cars and mining-cars,although it may be applied to other kinds of cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a coupling that will be simple in its operation and construction and positive in its locking action and one that will not be likely to become accidentally uncoupled, yet one that may be readily uncoupled when it is desired to uncouple the cars.
Finally, the object of my invention is to provide a device that will be strong, durable, and efficient and comparatively inexpensive to construct and one in which the several parts will not be liable to get out of working order.
WVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction, a preferable embodiment of which is described in the specification and illustrated in the drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a top plan View showing the parts coupled. Fig-,2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the parts uncoupled, and Fig. 1 is a detail perspective view of the hook and loop.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates a buffing-frame carried 011 the car, at each end thereof. Each bufling-frame is provided with two draw-bars 2 and-3. The draw-bar 2 is provided on its upper side, toward its outer end,with a hook which is adapted to engage with a loopi5, formed on the outer end of the draw-bar 3, when two cars are coupled. The draw-bars are so arranged on each of the cars as to dispose the hooks a and the loops 5 diagonally to each other and on opposite sides of the center of the car. Thus no matter which ends of two cars are presented to each other to be coupled a hook will always be opposite a loop.
The buffing-frame 1 supports on its under side a rectangular underframe 6 by means of standards 7. The draw-bar 2 is secured fast to the upper side of the rectangular frame 6 and is rounded at its outer end 8, so that upon coming in contact with the outer edge of the loop 5 the latter will ride up on the rounded end 8 and allow the draw-bar 2 to slide under the same. The hook 4 is provided with an inclined front face 9 and a vertical rear face 10, so that after the draw-bar raises and slides ,under the loop the latter, coming in contact with the inclined front face 9, rides up the same over the hook and drops down against the rear face 10, thus locking the parts and coupling the cars.
The draw-bar 3, carrying the loop 5, is pivoted between the two rear standards 7 on a rod 11 and is formed at its rear end with a weighted portion 12,which balances the bar, and thereby assists the draw-bar 2 in raising the loop.
In order to uncouple the parts, Iprovide a Vertical pin 13, sliding in the frame 1 and resting on the weighted portion 12. The pin is pivotally connected to an arm 14:, carried by a rod 15, mounted on the car and operated by levers 16, provided on the outer ends of the rod 15. It will thus be seen that by depressing the pin 13 the weighted end 12 of the draw-bar 3 will be forced downward and the loop 5 elevated, thereby releasing the hook 4:, which may be readily disengaged from the loop 5, thus allowing the cars to be separated.
The operation of my coupling is thought to be clear from the foregoing and a further description of the same is deemed unnecessary.
, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction and operation, as I may make various changes in the same with out departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a carcoupling, a frame carrying a draw-barhaving a rounded end and provided with a hook. having an inclined face and avertical face, a frame carrying a pivoted drawbar provided with a loop, the said hook adapted to engage with the said loop, a weight car- IOC ried by the pivoted draw-bar, and means for uncoupling the hook and the loop; substantially as described.
2. In a car-coupling, a buffing-frame supporting an underfraine, a draw-bar provided with a rounded end secured to the underframe and provided with a hook having an inclined face and a vertical face, a bufiingframe supporting an underfraine, a draw-bar pivoted between the buffing-frame and the underfraine and provided with a loop, the said hook adapted to engage with the said loop, a weight carried by the pivoted draw-bar, and means for uncoupling the hook and the loop; substantially as described.
In a car-coupling, a bufling-fraine supporting an underfraine, a fixed and a pivoted draw-bar carried by the frame, a hook carried on the fixed bar, a loop carried by the pivoted bar, a weight for balancing the pivoted bar,
and means for operating the pivoted bar; substantially as described.
4. In a car-coupling, a buffing-franie supporting an underfralne, a fixed bar having a rounded end and a pivoted draw-bar carried by the frame, a hook having an inclined face and a vertical face carried on the fixed bar, a loop carried by the pivoted bar, a weight carried on the end of the pivoted bar, and means for operating the pivoted bar; substantially as described.
