- the manner of using this reel is as follows: The box is first secured to its position. Then the ring I is grasped and the line drawn out, and as the line is drawn out the cord N is wound up on its spool M. The pawl G is disengaged from the ratchet-wheel during this movement. The crank and the ratchet and pawl are used only for hauling in any slack and stretching the line taut. Now, when the line is to be reeled up after using, the pawl is thrown over from the ratchet-wheel and the line released. Then it will be reeled in by the cord and Weight 0 running down, operating the reel through the medium of the wheel J, belt K, and pinion H.

CLOTHES-LINE REEL.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID YOUNG, acitizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in OlothesLine Reels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in reels for protecting clothes-lines; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of its several parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed outin the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my new clothes-line reel. Fig. 2 is an end View of same. Fig. 3 is alongitudinal section showing construction of the reel.
A represents a box of suit-able size and dimensions for containing a reel.
B is an iron shaft set in bearings 17 b, fixed in the ends of the box. Said shaft is made square, except at the bearings.
O is a wooden barrel placed on the shaft, and D D are metal heads or disks placed on the shaft and secured to the ends of the wooden barrel, thus forming a large spool for winding the clothes-line Ii upon. On one end of the shaft outside of the box isplaced a ratchet wheel E and a removable handcrank F.
' G is a pawl attached to the box and en'- gages with the ratchet-wheel E, and is used for holding the line taut when stretched out. On the opposite end of the shaft and outside of the box is placed a grooved pinion H. To the top corner of the box is set a post I,
' having a pin on which is fixed to turn a drawing out or reeling in. To the door is also 5 attached a rod R, supported by brackets T T, and upon which is placed a loose grooved pulley U, lying in front of the aforesaid slot S, and over which the line rides as it is paid in or out.
To the lower rear side of the box are attached slotted ears V V, and to the top rear side are attached plain earstcw. These are designed for holding the box against a wall or post, the lower ears being set over headed pins W W, fixed to the wall or post, and the top secured by buttons y y, attached to the wall or post. Thus the boxisremovably held in place. v
The manner of using this reel is as follows: The box is first secured to its position. Then the ring I is grasped and the line drawn out, and as the line is drawn out the cord N is wound up on its spool M. The pawl G is disengaged from the ratchet-wheel during this movement. The crank and the ratchet and pawl are used only for hauling in any slack and stretching the line taut. Now, when the line is to be reeled up after using, the pawl is thrown over from the ratchet-wheel and the line released. Then it will be reeled in by the cord and Weight 0 running down, operating the reel through the medium of the wheel J, belt K, and pinion H.
