Description
' Nrrnn STATES s. D. MC'LELLAND, ou Mconncon, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRINDING `EDGE-TOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,5 il dated July 1Q, 1864.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, S. D. MCLELLAND,of McGregor, in the county ot' Clayton, in the State ot' Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Grinding Edge-Tools; and Ido hereby declare that the following; is a tnll and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists, rst, in the use of a forked lover with a pivotful crurn at the apex, by which the lever may be frmly held against a standard attached to the frame of the stone or otherwise at any required point ot' the same, the lever also having a handle which ties the prongs of the same at the end opposite the apex.
My invention consists, second, in the use of an ad justabe cross-bar fastened to the lever with clamp-screws.
My invention consists, third, in the use of a clamp which fastcns the tool to the crosslar.
My invention consists, fourth, in the use of springs which open the clamp when the screws arev loosened.
To enablepothers skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to desrrlbe its construction and operation.
In Figure l ofthe accompanying drawings, F F represent the forked lever, with its point .12, attached to the standard H. S represents the cross tie and handle of the lever. A rep resents an adjustable cross-bar with its clampscrews, and It represents a tool held in the cross-har in a position for grinding.
In Fig. 2, B represents the clamp which fastens the tool to thecross-bar A, and N N the screws which hold the clamp B, and C C G C the clamp-screws which hold the adjustable bar to the forked lever. D D represent the springs which open the clamp when the tool is to be put in place or removed.
ln Fig. 3, A A represent the same crossbar with an additional clamp, I), to be used instead of clainp B. (Shown in Fig. 2.)
By the use of my invention the tool can be ground with ease and certainty in any desired shape, the lever to be used either side uppermost.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The employment or use of the forked lever with its point-fulcrum, in combination with the cross-bar and clamp, for the purpose set forth, as described.
2. The adjustable cross'bar with its clamps, for the purpose set forth, as described.
S. D. MOLELLAND.
