WINDOW FASTENING DEVICE.
No. 336,302. Patented Feb. 16, 188 6;
yms mica e/zfizagewv 95 115 GHOuW-L-Q wummo W NITED STATES ADDELBERT DUDGEON, OF BRADENVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
\NlNDOW-FAST ENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,302, dated February 16, 1886.
Application filed November 25, 1885. Serial No. 183,984.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADDELBERT DUDGEON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bradenville, in the county of \Vestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw- 1n s.
My invention relates to an improvement in sash-locks; and it consists in the peculiar G011 struction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a window frame and sashes provided with my improved sash locks, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 00 a; of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the central lock, the top plate thereof being removed.
A represents a window-frame in which are the usual upper and lower sashes, B and 0, re spectively. In the sides a of the frame are made the vertical series of openings 1).
D represents a central lock that is secured on the upper side of the lower sash, in the center thereof. This lock is composed of the plate E, having the case 6. In this case is pivoted a lever, F, to which is connected a bolt, G. The latter extends outwardly from the lever, and works through an opening, 0, in the side of the case. The lever is movable through a quarter of a circle, and the case 6 has an opening, e*, to permit the movement of the lever, and a recess, 6 into which the lever drops to lock the latter when moved to withdraw the bolt. A plate, G, covers the case 6, and is secured thereon by a screw, II, upon which the lever is also pivoted. A metallic keeper, I, is secured on the lower bar of the upper sash to receive the bolt G when the sashes are locked together.
K represents side locks, which are secured on opposite sides of the top of the lower sash, and consist, essentially, of the cases L and the bolts M and the coiled extensile springs O on (No model.)
the latter normally forced outwardly into engagement with some of the series of openings 1) in the window-frame. These bolts are connected to the lever F by rods N, that are attached to opposite sides of the pivotal opening of the lever.
\Vhen the lever is released from the recess 6, the springs 0 force the bolts M outwardly into engagement with the openings 1), and the movement of the bolts M gives the lever F a partial rotation, and forces. out the bolt G. If the sashes are closed, the bolt G enters the keeper I and locks the sashes together; but if the upper sash is partly lowered and thelower sash raised, or either, then the bolts M will enter the openings b and secure the lower sash to the frame and prevent it from being raised or lowered from the outside.
From this description it will be readily understood that the movement of the single lever F actuates all the bolts to Withdraw them simultaneously.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination, with the windowframe having the openings 1), and the sash having the keeper I, of the sash having the bolt G to enter the keeper and the bolts M to enter the openings and thereby lock the sashes together and to the frame, and the lever connected to the said bolts to withdraw them simultaneously, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the window-frame having the openings b, and the sash having the keeper I, of the sash having the springactuated bolts M to enter the openings, the bolt G to enter the keeper, and the pivoted lever connected to the said bolts for withdrawing them simultaneously, substantially as described.
'In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ADDELBERT DUDGEON.
\Vitnesses:
S. S. FOWLER,
reduced inner ends of the said bolts, to keep S. BEAR.
