SCHUSTER BASKET STYLE ARTICLE CARRIER HAVING STRAIGHT SIDE WALLS Filed Aug. 15, 1964 6 Sheets-Sheet 6 INVENTOR. R/CHARD L. S C HUS 75/? A T TORNEV United States Patent 3,268,113 BAKET STYLE ARTICLE CARRIER HAVING STRAIGHT SIDE WALLS Richard L. Schuster, Monroe, La., assignor to Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation, a corporation of Virginia Filed Aug. 13, 1964, Ser. No. 389,377 3 Claims. (Cl. 220113) The present invention relates to basket style article carriers and relates in particular to article carriers of the type useful to package bottles and like containers where each article packaged is separated from the next adjacent article by either a transverse partition strap or a longitudinal partition panel.
A particular feature of the present invention is the provision of a basket style carrier having a side wall defining a generally straight top edge in combination with transverse partition straps.
Basket carriers of the type to which the present invention relates having transverse partition straps are frequently referred to in the trade as strap style carriers.
A further feature of the present invention is the provision of a strap style article carrier having transverse partitions hinged to at least one side wall of the carrier where the top edge of the side wall to which the straps are hinged is generally straight with no upwardly projecting tabs or flaps.
A further feature of the present invention is the provision of a blank for a strap style carrier so constructed and arranged to produce a minimum of scrap.
A further feature of the present invention is the provision of a basket style strap type carrier having an anchor tab and an anchor panel where the tab and the panel are operative to support the straps.
A basket style carrier embracing certain features of the present invention may comprise a handle panel including a hinged anchor panel, two end walls, a side wall having a generally straight upper edge and a partition strap assembly hinged to the side wall, said assembly including an anchor tab and at least two transverse partitions fixed to the anchor panel.
A basket style blank embracing certain principles of the present invention may comprise a plurality of hinged handle panels, one of said handle panels having an anchor panel hingedly connected thereto, at least one side wall having at least one generally straight edge, and a partition assembly hinged to said side wall along said straight edge, said partition assembly including glue flaps operative to connect with said anchor panel upon erection of the carrier effective to provide transverse partition straps.
Other features and advantages of the present invention will become more apparent from an examination of the succeeding specification when read in conjunction with the appended drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a plan view, appropriately hatched to show glue areas, of a carriar blank embracing an exemplary embodiment of the invention;
FIG. 2 is similar to FIG. 1 showing an initial step in fabricating the carrier;
FIG. 3 shows a further step in fabricating the carrier wherein the handle panels .and the partition assemblies have been glued and folded;
FIG. 4 shows the final position of the anchor panel;
FIG. 5 shows the end walls and end wall extensions rotated into final position in accordance with well known practice;
FIG. 6 shows the arrangement of FIG. 5 folded and glued to develop a collapsed carrier;
FIGS. 7 and 8 are perspective views of the erected carrier illustrating the transverse partition straps and the straight upper edge of the carrier side Wall.
Referring now to the drawings, particularly FIG. 1, the
Patented August 23, 1966 carrier blank indicated generally by the reference numeral 10 embraces side walls 11 and 12 having generally straight upper edges 13 and 14, end walls 16, 17, 18 and 19, bottom wall 21 and bottom flap 22.
The blank also includes a handle panel section indicated generally by the reference numeral 23 excluding exterior handle panels 24 and 26 and interior handle panels 27 and 28.
Note that anchor panel 29 is part of the handle panel assembly 23 by virtue of the hinged connection referenced 31 between panel 29 and interior panel 27.
In conventional fashion each end wall 16 through 19 is hingedly connected to a longitudinal partition member identified by the reference numerals 32, 33, 34 and 36, respectively.
In addition, the blank embraces transverse partition assemblies indicated generally by the reference numerals 37 and 38.
Partition assembly 37 includes anchor tab 39, partition straps 41 and 42 and hinged glue flaps 43 and 44.
Assembly 38 correspondingly embraces anchor tab 46, partition straps 47 and 48 and glue flaps 49 and 51.
The hatching is intended to designate glue areas.
Referring now to FIGS. 2 through 6 the blank is converted into a collapsed carrier in the following fashion:
First, partition assemblies 37 and 38, glued in accordance with the hatching, are rotated about their respective score lines 35 and 40 from the position shown in FIG. 1 to the position shown in FIG. 2.
Next handle panels 27 and 28 including anchor panel 29 are rotated about score line 45 to the position shown in FIG. 3.
Simultaneously, partition straps 41 and 47 are rotated about score lines 50 and 55 while glue flaps 43 and 49 are return folded about score lines 60 and 65, respectively, so as to overlay mating partitions 41 and 47 as shown in FIG. 3.
Thus, referring in particular to FIGS. 2 and 3 straps 41 and 47 including their hinged glue flaps are first folded to the right and thereafter glue flaps 43 and 49 are folded to the left.
Next glue flaps 44 and 51 are rotated about their respective score lines from the position shown in FIG. 2 to the position of FIG. 3.
Obviously, glue is previously applied to glue flaps 43, 44, 49 and 51 in accordance with the hatching shown in FIG. 3.
FIG. 4 shows that anchor panel 29 has been rotated out of the plane of handle panel 27 and about score line 31 from the position shown in FIG. 3 to the position shown in FIG. 4.
FIG. 5 shows the steps of rotating end walls 16 and 18 including their respective longitudinal partitions 32 and 34 about score lines 70 and in conventional fashion.
correspondingly, longitudinal partitions 33 and 36 are rotated about score lines and 85.
Next the blank represented by FIG. 5 is folded about central handle panel score line 86 and bottom flap 22 is glued to the exterior of bottom 21 in conventional fashion to produce the collapsed carrier of FIG. 6.
FIGS. 7 and 8 show the collapsed carrier of FIG. 6 in the erected condition.
Note transverse partition assembly 38 including anchor tab 46, transverse partitions 47 and 48 and glue flaps 49 and 51.
Note further that the upper edge 13 of side wall 11 is generally straight with no upwardly projecting tabs or flaps.
Anchor panel 29 to which glue flaps 49 and 41 are fixed is apparent in FIGS. 7 and 8.
It is anticipated that a wide variety of embodiments of the present invention may be devised including a three cell carrier structure without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention.
For exemplary purposes a three cell carrier is intended to define a carrier unit having a handle panel such as is reference H in FIG. 7 with a three cell article receiving section referenced A with the portion referenced X being deleted or eliminated so that the three cell unit would merely embrace a handle panel H connected to unit A.
I claim:
1. A blank for a basket style article carrier comprising at least one side wall, end walls, a handle panel assembly including two exterior handle panels having an edge portion hingedly interconnected, an interior handle panel hingedly connected to one of said exterior handle panels, an anchor panel having an edge portion hingedly connected to said interior handle panel and having its remaining edge portion free from the adjacent area of the blank, and at least one transverse partition assembly including an anchor,
tab having one edge portion hingedly connected to an edge of said side wall, partition straps hingedly connected to opposite edges of said anchor tab, and glue flaps hingedly connected to the free edges of each of said partition straps.
