(Cl. 2--150) This invention relates to mens neckties and. more particularly, relates to an improved pre-knottcd four-in-hand llC.

Prc-tietl neckties have been extensively utilized. For example, they are often used for children who find it difiicult to tie their tie accurately. Similarly, pre-tied ties are utilized by adults for both convenience and time saving.

Many of such ties are pre-tied, that is, the knot cannot be opened or the position thereof adjusted because the knot is permanently aflixetl into the tie tts by stitching.

Such tics must be provided with various arrangements such as collar-button hooks and collar tabs to enable the wearer to position the knot properly on the collar. Such arrangements are, however, limited in application, being unsuitable for some shirt styles, and are cumbersome in use. The use of a split neck band the ends of which are removably secured together by snap fasteners or buttons is ditlicult to position and adjust.

Some pre-tied necktics permit adjustment of the slip knot for appearance. However, wearing of such ties usually involves creasing of the shirt collar.

ln almost all of the pretied and pre-knotted ties, removal of the tie is entirely ditlerent from a conventional tic. which seems to be a disadvantage by embarrassing the wearer. Further. the process of putting on the tie is usually longer than that of a conventional tie, eliminating the potential time saving advantage of pre-tied or preknotted ties.

It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a preknotted tie having a pre-formed slip knot therein into which the hidden end of the tie is inserted when the tie is to be worn.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide an improved insert which is enclosed within a knot in a tie to provide a pre-knotted tie.

in accordance with this invention, there is provided in a preferred embodiment of this invention, a pre-knotted tie in which-a slip knot is formed at the desired position of the knot in the exposed portion of the tie. The knot is formed about a tubular insert thereby to provide a tubular opening in the slip knot which can receive the thinner hidden end of the tie. By this arrangement, the tie is worn by the user merely by sliding the hidden end of the tie under the collar, inserting it through the tubular opening in the slip knot and pulling it tight about the neck of the wearer.

The insert within the knot comprises a tubular portion and anchoring means to hold it within the knot.

Having briefly described this invention, it will be describcd in greater detail along with other objects and advantages in the following portions of the specification, which may best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, of which:

In the figures, there is shown a pre-knotted necktie l0 7 formed of fabric cut in a generally elongated configuration having one end 12 thereof adapted to be exposed on the shirt from of the wearer and a narrower hidden end portion 14 which, in normal use, falls beneath the exposed end 12 during wear. A permanent slip knot 15 is formed in the material. The knot is tied about a fitting 16 which preferably is provided with a tubular section 18 and a tab 20 extending generally outwardly from the axis of said tube. The fitting 16 may be formed of relatively stiff plastic material and the tab 20 integrally formed with the material which is rolled to form the tubular section 18. The material may be cemented along the edge to form the tubular section 18, may be thermoformed of thermoplastic material, or may be cast to shape. The tie is knotted over the fitting 16 as shown. A Windsor knot is preferably used since it provides both symmetry and secure holding of the insert or fitting 16. The tab 20 serves the dual purpose of anchoring the fitting within the knot to prevent slippage therefrom and to provide a thickening member for the slide of the knot formed about the tab thereby to provide a symmetrical knot. Once formed, the knot is pcmtanently secured in place by stitches 22. The hidden'end of the tie 14 is preferably provided with an elongated stiffening member 24 which may extend outwardly from the end of the tie to provide a free portion which may be grasped by the fingers.

To wear the tie, the user need merely thread the hidden portion 14 through his shirt collar and insert the stiffened end portion 24 through the tube 18. The extension may then be grasped by the fingers and the hidden end 14 pulled through the knot until the knot is properly posi- To remove the tie, the hidden end is merely pulled through the knot as in removal of a conventional necktie.

With this arrangement, the usual complexities of preknotted ties such as attachments to shirt collar buttons and/or tabs that slip under the collar are obviated and the tie drapes and hangs in the fashion of a hand tied necktie. The installation and removal of the necktie is in identical fashion to that of a hand tied tie, preventing embarrassment vto the user. However. the advantages of a pre-knotted tie in speed of installation and removal is retained.

The stiffening member 24 in the hidden end of the tie can be completely concealed by being covered with fabric. It is only necessary that the member be long enough so as to be threaded through the tube 18 and providing an extending portion to be grasped by the fingers. Similarly. the tab 20 can be dispensed with and the tttbe 18 secured within the knot as by an adhesive or stitching. The tab 20 serves'the desired purpose of anchoring the tube and simultaneously providing a means of shaping the tie for symmetry.

This invention may be variously modified and embodied within the scope of the'subjoined claims.

- What is claimed is:

l. A pre-knotted necktie having a V-shaped knot comprising an elongated strip of fabric having a wider exposed end and a narrower hidden end, a fitting located within said knot when tied in a portion of the wider exposed end to secure the fitting within said knot, said fitting comprising a tubular section and a tab extending outwardly from the axis of said tubular section to form a V-shaped fitting. said tubular portion being encircled by one loop of said fabric when formed into said knot and said tab portion being encircled by another loop of material formed in said knot, the end of said tubular portion carrying said tab being positioned at the narrow portion of said V-shaped knot and flaring outwardly to support and define the V-shaped configuration of said knot, said fitting being secured within said knot by the encircling folds of material, said tubular section forming an open passageway through said knot and adapted to receive said narrower hidden end of said fabric strip for installation over and removal of said necktie during wear.

2. A pre-knotted necktie in accordance with claim I in which said narrower hidden end is provided with a stiffening member adapted for insertion through said tubular section when the necktie is to be worn.

Claims

1. A PRE-KNOTTED NECKTIE HAVING A V-SHAPED KNOT COMPRISING AN ELONGATED STRIP OF FABRIC HAVING A WIDER EXPOSED END AND A NARROWER HIDDEN END, A FITTING LOCATED WITHIN SAID KNOT WHEN TIED IN A PORTION OF THE WIDER EXPOSED END TO SECURE THE FITTING WITHIN SAID KNOT, SAID FITTING COMPRISING A TUBULAR SECTION AND A TAB EXTENDING OUTWARDLY FROM THE AXIS OF SAID TUBULAR SECTION TO FORM A V-SHAPED FITTING, SAID TUBULAR PORTION BEING ENCIRCLED BY ONE LOOP OF SAID FABRIC WHEN FORMED INTO SAID KNOT AND SAID TAB PORTION BEING ENCIRCLED BY ANOTHER LOOP OF MATERIAL FORMED IN SAID KNOT, THE END OF SAID TUBULAR PORTION CARRYING SAID TAB BEING POSITIONED AT THE NARROW PORTION OF SAID V-SHAPED KNOT AND FLARING OUTWARDLY TO SUPPORT AND DEFINE THE V-SHAPED CONFIGURATION OF SAID KNOT, SAID FITTING BEING SECURED WITHIN SAID KNOT BY THE ENCIRCLING FOLDS OF MATERIAL, SAID TUBULAR SECTION FORMING AN OPEN PASSAGEWAY THROUGH SAID KNOT AND ADAPTED TO RECEIVE SAID NARROWER HIDDEN END OF SAID FABRIC STRIP FOR INSTALLATION OVER AND REMOVAL OF SAID NECKTIE DURING WEAR.
