my invention relates in general to the neckwear art and, more particularly, to articles of neckwear designed to be. worn with shirts; blouses; or other garments of a similar nature.

The invention finds particular utility' when practiced in connection with the type of clothing which is frequently donned for relatively informal occasions and which is popularly known as sportswear. As an example, articles of. neckwear fabricated in accordance with my inven-' tion: may be worn with such garments as mens sport shirts with particular advantage and: I prefer to: consider the invention. in this connection herein for convenience in disclosing same. However, it will be understood that -I- do not intend to be limited specifically thereto since various featuresof my inventionmay be embodiedlin articles of neckwear to be worn with garments of a more formal nature and by women as well as men.

It will readily be appreciated that one of the principal advantages of mens sport shirts resides in the fact that they provide freedom from the inconvenience and discomfort of wearin conventional cravats. However, even in social gathering's'of an informal nature, occasions frequently'arise where neckties are in order and" the lack thereof may be a source of embarrassment to those wearing conventional sport shirts.

One of the objects of my invention, therefore, is to provide a garment such as a sportshirtha'ving a cravat associated therewith which satisfies the requirements of convention but which.

possesses none of the disadvantages of conventional neckties.

An important object of the invention is to provide an article of neckwear which is formed either partially or wholly by the collar of a gar'- ment with which it is to beworn. More sp'ecifi-.

cally it is anobject of the invention to provide a a a member which is superimposed upon the-foremost tab and is detachably' connected to the rearmost tab.

Still another object is to provide such a tab fastening member which at least partially encloses the tabs of the collar.

A further object is to provide sucha fastening memberwhich is insertable into suitable openings' in one or both of the tabs.

An object in connection-with one form of the invention is to provide a cravat' member which is adapted to be attached to a conventional dress shirt by fastening means adapted to cooperate with the uppermost button and buttonhole of such a shirt.

A'still further object of the invention is to provide articles of neckwear which are designed to offer an attractive and pleasing appearance.

The foregoing objects and advantages of my invention, together with various other objects and advantages thereof which will become evi dent hereinaftenmay be attained through the employment of the exemplary embodiments which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings and" which are described in detail hereinafter. Referring to the drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only: Fig. 1' is a perspective view of a garment incorporating an article of neckwear which embodies my invention;

Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, I show an article of neck'w'ear Hi which embodies the invention and which is attached to a mans sport shirt l l, although" it will be understood that the sport shirt is shown merely for illustrative purposes and that a ladys blouse, or

any other garment designed to be worn onthe upper part of the person, may be substituted therefor. The article of neckwear lfl'o'omprises a collar i2"having elongated tabs l3 and M, the tabs being crossed so that the tab l d is superimposed on the tab E3 to form a cravat; movement of the tabs 23' and i i is limited by a fastening member lt 'which cooperates with the tabs to form the cravat, the fastening member being a s'tripof cloth or other material which is superiinposed'up'on the front tab 4; The fasten ing member l5 spans the front tab M and the ends thereof arel'ooped around the edges of the front; tab and are detachably connected to the Relative rear tab l3, as by means of snap fasteners l3, for example, as best shown in Fig. 2.

It will be apparent that the article of neckwear I5, being a part of the sport shirt I I or other garment with which it is worn, may be donned with a minimum of effort as compared to the effort involved in putting on an ordinary neck- 1 tie, it being necessary only to attach and detach one end of the fastening member 5 when putting on or taking off the shirt. Alternatively, in donning and doffing the sport shirt I I, the front tab l4 need merely be slipped into or out of the loop formed by the fastening member I5. It will also be apparent that the article of neckwear l will produce none of the discomfort frequently encountered when wearing a conventional necktie because of the fact that the front tab l4 may slide freely in the loop formed by the fastening member 5 so that there is no tendency to throttle the wearer.

The embodiment of my invention which is shown in Fig. 3 is similar to that described above and comprises an article of neckwear which is attached to a shirt 2|, the article 29 including a collar 22 having elongated tabs 23 and 24 which are crossed so that the tab 24 overlies the tab 23. The two tabs are secured relative to each other by a fastening member or cravat member 25 which is looped around the front tab 24 and which is detachably connected to the rear tab 23 by snap fasteners 26. The fastening member 25 'is generally similar to the previously described fastening member |5 insofar as function is concerned, the principal difference being that the fastening m'ember25 is sufficiently large so that r it substantially completely encloses the front tab 24. It'will be noted that the positions of the snap fasteners 26 on the rear tab 23 of the collar 22 are similar to the positions of the snap fasteners IS on the rear tab |3 of the collar l2 so that the fastening members |5 and 25 may be used interchangeably, which is a feature of the invention.

In Figs. 4 and 5 I show an article of neckwear 30 on a shirt or similar garment 3|, the article 33 comprising a collar 32 having elongated tabs 33 and 34 which are crossed in the manner described previously, the tabs 33 and 34 being somewhat shorter than those in the previous embodiments.

snap fastener 38. Preferably, the cravat member 35 is provided with a pocket 39 therein forwardly of the front tab 34, this pocket being filled with a suitable padding material to give body to the member.

In Fig. 6, I show an article of neckwear 4|) designed to be worn with a conventional dress shirt 4|, although it may be worn with shirts of other types if desired. The shirt 4| includes the usual collar 42 to which a cravat member 43 may be attached, the cravat member being designed to be attached to the collar 42 when the shirt 4| is worn with the collar button open. The cravat member 43 is provided with a button hole 44 therein positioned to receive the collar button 45 on the shirt 4|, and is provided with abutton 45 thereon which is positioned to be received in the usual collar button hole 41 in the shirt. Thus, the cravat member 43 serves the purposes of a necktie while permitting the freedom attainable by wearing the shirt 4| with the collar 42 thereof open.

The embodiment of the invention which is shown in Fig. '7 comprises an article of neckwear 59 to be worn with a garment such as a shirt 5|, th article 59 comprising a collar 52 having elongated tabs 53 and 54 which are crossed in the manner previously described so that the tab 54 overlies the tab 53. The, tabs 53 and 54 are secured relative to each other by a fastening member 55 whose ends are hook shaped and are insertable into openings 56in the rear tab 53, the front tab 54 being disposed under the fastening member so that the latter serves to limit relative movement of the two tabs. Preferably, the fastening member 55 includes a transverse portion 51 having hook shaped ends which are insertable in openings 58 in the front tab 54. The hook shaped ends of the transverse portion 57 of the fastening member may receive the edges of the rear tab 53 to'furthe'r secure the tabs together, if desired. The fastening member 55 is preferably formed of metal, although not necessarily so, and, if desired, may be provided with an appropriate embellishment at the, center thereof.

In Fig. 8 I show a fastening member or cravat member 66 having a pair of hook elements 6| thereon one of which may be inserted in the uppermost of the openings 56 in the rear tab 53 of the collar 52 shown in Fig. Land the other of which may be inserted in the uppermost of the openings 58 in the front tab 54 of the collar 52. Thus, the article of neckwear shown in Fig. 7 may be worn with either, the 'fasteningmember' 55, or the fastening member 60.

The embodiment of my invention illustrated in Fig. 9 is similar to that illustrated in'Fig. 4 and consists of an article of neckwear 73 which is attached to a garment such as a shirt 1|, the shirt having a collar 12 terminating in tabs (not shown) to which .afastening member or cravat member 15 similar to' the previously describedcravat member 35 is attached. The cravat member '55 comprises an upper portion 16 and a depending lower portion 11 which simulates 'a conventional necktie. The upper portion 16 of the cravat member is provided with buttonholes 78 therein which are positioned to receive the buttons which are frequently provided on dress shirts to hold down the tabs of the collar. Thus, the cravat member 15' may be attached to the shirt ll, either in the manner previously described in connection with the article of neckwear 30, or by means of the tab hold-down buttons usually provided on dress shirts.

It will be apparent that the various articles of neckwear hereinbefore described perform the functions of neckties without restricting the freedom of the wearer and may be donned and doffed with a minimum expenditure of time and effort. The various fastening members or cravat members may be made of different'material and sarily departing from th spirit of the invention, and I hereby reserve the right to all such changes, modifications and substitutions as properly come within the scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. An article of apparel, including: a, collar having elongated tabs which are crossed so that one overlies the other; a fastening member having an intermediate portion which extends across and overlies said one tab, and having end portions which are doubled back under said one tab; and fastening elements secured to said end portions detachably connecting said end portions with fastening elements secured to said other tab.

2. An article of apparel as defined in claim 1 wherein said fastenin elements are snap fasteners.
