OIL-CAN FOR. OILING MACHINERY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,206, dated December 18, 1883.

Be it known thatl I, JAMES H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing in' the city of Ottawa, in the county of La Salle and 'Ihe object of my invention is to provide a detachable funnel, which, when the oil-can is in use, shall rest upon the top of the can like a cap, covering the joint where the nozzle is screwed into the can, forming a part of the can, and thereby protecting the hands of the operator from oil escaping from the joint between nozzle and can, and which funnel can be slipped off, either before or after .the nozzle is unscrewed, and inserted into the aperture in the top of the can from which the nozzle has been unscrewed, and the can is' iilled with oil poured through it. The funnel iS made to iit tightly the base of the nozzle, and also to iit closely the aperture in the can,
.so that no screw or their appliance is .necessary to hold itin place.

Figures'l and 2 show in elevation and in section the funnel a as attached to the oil-can b when in use, and kept from working loose by the close connection of the parts and by the rubber ring c, which serves, also, as a receiver for oil leaking from the extremity of the nozzle. In Fig. 3 the nozzle d is shown as un- Screwed from the oil-can b and the funnel a partially removed. In4 Fig. 4 is shown the funnel a as inserted into the top ofthe oil-can bin use and the can being lled through it from the bottle of oil.
The modeof using the invention is as follows: The funnel (inverted) is slipped over the nozzle down upon the top of the oil-can, where it is held in place by the close proximity of the parts and by the rubber ring c, as shown in Fig. 1. Here the funnel covers the joint where the nozzle is screwed into the `can, and protects the hands of the operator mouth of the can, and oil poured through it into the can.
I claim as my invention- 1. A removable funnel capable of fitting the fllling-orice of an oil-can for oiling machinery, and fitting closely about the base of thellng-nozzle, and resting like a cap upon the body ofthe can when the can is in use, as Yand for the purpose set forth.
