Description
Allg- 27, 1957 H. P. SHEDD vIsoR ATTACHED CALENDAR Filed Aug. 22, 1956 IN V EN TOR P/Vfyf United States Patent i VISOR ATTACHED CALENDAR Hugh P. Shedd, Minneapolis, Minn., assignor to Shedd- Brown, Inc., Minneapolis, Minn., a corporation of Min nesota Application August 22, 1956, Serial No. 605,557
3 Claims. (Cl. 40-107) My invention relates generally to accessories for automotive vehicles and the like and, more particularly, to improvements in calendar and/ or memo pads of the type adapted to be detachably secured to the sun visor ot automotive vehicles for ready access to the driver.
The primary yobject of my invention is the provision of a device of the class above described which is provided with novel means for retaining one or more coins (for -use -in parking meters and the like) in ready acces-s and against accidental loss.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a device of the `class described which is relatively inexpensive to produce, which is completely reliable in its operation, which `securely conceals the coin 4or coins against view -by others than the owner, and in which the coin may be removed with a minimum of time and effort.
The above and still further objects of my invention will become apparent from the following detailed lspecification, appended claims and attached drawings.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like parts are ind-icated by like characters throughout the several views:
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of a sun visor of an automotive vehicle, showing my novel device in operative position thereon.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of my device as shown in Fig. 1, some parts being broken away;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view in transverse section as seen substantially from the line 3--3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view as seen `from the line 4 4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a view corresponding generally to Figure 3, but showing a different position of ysome of the parts.
Referring with greater particularity to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates an elongated generally rectangular and relatively rigid backing member to the front surface 2 of which is secured a conventional calendar or calendar and memo pad 3. Preferably a plurality of staples or the like 4, longitudinally spaced along the upper longitudinal edge 5, hingedly secure the pad 3 to the upper longitudinal edge portion 6 of the backing member 1. As shown, the backing member 1 is provided with longitudinally spaced coin receiving apertures 7 beneath the pad 3, inwardly spaced from the peripheral edges of said pad 3. Apertures 7 are of a diameter only slightly greater than the size of a conventional coin for use lin coin operated parking meters or the like, and are provided at their lower end portions with ngernail receiving notches 8 to facilitate removal of a coin therein.
In engagement with the rear surface 9 of the pad 1, preferably and as shown by means of rivets 10 or the like, and extending transversely thereof are a pair of resilient clips 11. As shown, the inner ends 12 of the clips 11 are made fast to the backing member 1, by means of said rivets 10, said rivets 10 being located adjacent the notched lower sides 8 of their cooperating aperture 7. The intermediate portions 13 of said clips 11 overlie one each one of the openings 7 and the hook acting outer ends 14 thereof terminate in laterally outwardly spaced relationship to the upper longitudinal edge 6 of the longitudinal edge 6 of the backing member 1 with the upper longitudinal edge 15 of a conventional sun visor 16, when my novel device is in the operative position of Fig. 1. Also, as shown in Fig. 2, the resilient clips 11 are formed :from sufficiently Wide strips of resilient sheet steel or the like, to preclude a coin, placed in one of the openings 7 from passing outwardly from said opening 7 in a rearward direction.
To normally force the otherwise free swinging longitudinal lower edge 17 of the pad 3, into engagement with the front face 2 of the backing member 1, and thus hold the pad 1 flat against said front surface 2, l provide a resilient pencil receiving hook 18 which is secured to the front face 2 of the backing member 1 by means of a rivet 19 or the like and which projects outwardly through aligned openings 20 in the longitudinal center of the sheets comprising pad 3, and in inwardly spaced relation to the lower longitudinal edge 17 thereof. As shown, the hook 18 extends upwardly so as to receive therein a pencil or the like 21 which is forced against the upper surface of the pad 3 while same extends longitudinally thereof. By this means a coin placed within either one or both of the openings 7 is also secured `against accidental displacement therefrom in a yforward direction. Obviously, when it is desired to remove a coin, not shown, from one of the apertures 7 it is but necessary to remove the pencil 21 by lifting the same upwardly from the spring clip 18 and swinging the free edge 17 `of the pad 3 upwardly on the hinge acting -staples 4. The fingernail of the operator may then, if found necessary, be inserted under the coin, through and medium of the notch 8.
It will be noted that the rivets 10, securing the resilient clips 11 to the rear surface of the backing member 1 are sulciently vspaced from the longitudinal edge 6 of the backing member 1 so as to permit temporary and yielding separation of the outwardly projected ends 14 of the resilient clips 11 with respect to the backing member 1 for the purpose of inserting therebetween the back folded free edges 17 yof the used leaves of the pad 3, see Fig. 5. This novel arrangement, coupled with the close spacing of the hinged upper longitudinal edge 5 of the pad 3 to the upper longitudinal edge 6 of the backing member 1, makes it possible to retain the used leaves of the pad 3 (with the memorandum `or data written thereon), to be preserved for purposes of record from year to year.
My invention has been thoroughly tested and found to be `completely satisfactory for the accomplishment of the above objects, and while I have disclosed a preferred embodiment thereof, it should be -obvious that same is capable of modification without departure from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
l. A calendar .adapted to be detachably 'secured to the sun visor of an automotive vehicle or the like comprising a rigid sheet-like backing member, a flexible calendar pad hingedly secured along one edge to the front side of said backing member adjacent one edge portion thereof, said backing beneath said pad being provided with a coin receiving aperture, a resilient clip overlying the rear surface of Said backing member and extending transversely thereof with the intermediate portion thereof partially closing said opening and limiting movements in one direction of a coin in said opening, and detachable means for clamping the opposite edge of said pad to the front surface of said `backing member whereby to limit movements of a coin in said open-ing in the `opposite direction.
2. The structure defined in claim 1 in which said clip is formed from a flat strip of metal, the inner end thereof being secured to said backing member on one side of said opening, the outer end of said clip terminating laterally outwardly of said one edge portion of said backing member `on the opposite side of said opening.
