(Cl. 40-119) My invention relates generally to calendars and more particularly to wall-type calendars wherein "relatively flexible calendar pads are mounted on relatively rigid backing sheets.

Still more specifically, my invention relates to calendars known in the art as memo calendars-that is, calendars of the type wherein the leaves of the pad represent a given period of time and are provided with spaces for memorandum which is preserved for later reference, and in many cases are formed to define upwardly opening pockets for the reception of receipts, bills, statements and so forth.

Still more specifically, my invention relates to calendars of the type immediately above described wherein clip means is provided for the reception of a pencil or like writing instrument.

The primary object of my invention is the provision of a novel clip which may be pressed from a flexible resilient strip of metal to define a pair of cooperating pencilgrasping jaws spaced immediately below the lower edge of the pad, the uppermost jaw of which is formed adjacent its free end to define a lip which projects upwardly in overlying relationship to the free lower edge of the pad and holds the leaves thereof in an orderly arrangement, free from outward swinging movements.

A further object of my invention is the provision of a device of the class immediately above described which is extremely inexpensive to produce and is easy to install in operative position.

A still further object of my invention is the provision of a device of the class above described which is highly eflicient in its operation and is durable in use.

The above and still further objects of my invention will become apparent from the following detailed specification, appended claim and attached drawings.

Referring to the drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views:

FIG. 1 is a view in elevation of a calendar constructed in accordance with my invention, some parts broken away;

FIG. 2 is an enlarged view in perspective of my novel clip;

FIG. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of FIG. 1; and

FIG. 4 is a view in vertical section, on an enlarged scale, as seen from the line 4-4 of FIG. 1, portions thereof being broken away.

Referring with greater particularity to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a generally rectangular relatively rigid backing sheet, preferably formed from cardboard or the like, whereas the numeral 2 indicates in its entirety a calendar pad, the overlying leaves 2a of which represent months or other measured units of time making up the calendar year. In conventional manner the pad 2 is secured to the backing sheet 1 adjacent its upper edge 1a, by staples or the like, as indicated at 3.

Preferably, and as shown in FIG. 4, the backing sheet 1, at its upper end, is formed to define a depending flap 4, which is connected to the backing sheet 1 by means of an expansible accordion pleat 5 for a purpose which will hereinafter become apparent.

Each of the leaves 2a is perforated intermediate its upper and lower ends, as indicated at 6, to facilitate fold "Ice ing upwardly of the pocket-equipped portions 7 under the flap 4 as the unit of time represented thereby expires, or alternatively to facilitate severance at the end of each calendar year. To insure sufficient tension being exerted by the flap 4 upon the pocketed lower portion 7 of the leaves 20, it will be noted that opposite ends of a hanger cord 8 extend through spaced apertures 9 in the backing sheet 1 and are secured to the back side of the flap 4 by means of grommets 10 or the like.

For the dual purpose of maintaining the pocketequipped lower end portions 7 of the leaves 2a in orderly face-to-face positions, free from outward swinging movements about a horizontal axis defined by the perforations 6, and to provide a clip for retention of a pencil A in a horizontal position below the pad 2, there is provided a flexible resilient metal strap 11, which overlies and is secured to the backing sheet 1 by means of a grommet 12, which is concealed beneath the lower end portion ,ofthe pad 2, whereby the lower end thereof projects downwardly below the lower edge 13 of the pad 2 intermediate the side edges 14, 15 thereof. As shown, the strap 11 has struck or pressed from the intermediate portion thereof a tongue 16 which is back-turned upon itself to define a resilient jaW element 17, which projects generally outwardly and somewhat downwardly with respect to the plane of the backing sheet 1, and a generally upwardly projecting lip 18 which overlies the lower edge 13 of the pad 2.

In downwardly spaced relationship to the jaw element 17, strap 11 is bent generally outwardly from the plane of the backing sheet 1 to define a second or lower resilient jaw element 19, which, as shown, is generally parallel to the jaw element 17. 18, 20 are formed each on a radius 18a, 20a, respectively, which arcuate portions cooperate to define a restricted mouth 21 for the reception of the pencil A. In this manner, the

17, 19 are yieldingly moved away from each other as the pencil A is inserted therebetween, whereby to retain said pencil therebetween under yielding bias.

As shown particularly in FIG. 2, the recess 22, from which the tongue 16 has been pressed, bifurcates the lower end portion of the strap 11 to define

23, 24, said recess 22 extending substantially through the jaw element'19 and terminating at the radius 20a. This weakening of the jaw element 19 reduces the yielding bias exerted thereby in the direction of the cooperating jaw element 17 and thus facilitates insertion between and removal from pencils A therebetween.

To discourage accidental rotation of the lower end portion of the strap 11 about the axis of the grommet 12, the strap 11 is dimpled at circumferentially spaced points about said grommet 12, as indicated at 25.

My invention has been thoroughly tested and found to be completely satisfactory for the accomplishment of the above objects; and while I have disclosed a preferred embodiment thereof, same may well be capable of modification wtihout departure from the scope and spirit of the appended claim.

What is claimed is:

The improvement in calendars of the type which include a relatively rigid backing sheet, and a calendar pad comprising a plurality of relatively flexible leaves superimposed on said backing sheet and secured thereto along its upper edge for swinging movements of the free lower ends of said sheets away from said backing sheet, said improvement comprising:

(a) a flexible resilient metals rap overlying said backing sheet,

(b) means securing said strap to said backing sheet in underlying relationship to said pad whereby the lower end thereof'projects below said pad intermedi ate the side edges thereof, 4

(c) said strap immediately below, said pad having struck from the intermediate portion thereof a tongue which is bent generally outwardly from the, plane of said backing sheet to define a resilient jaw element,

(d) said strap in downward spaced relationship to said first mentioned jaw element being bent generally ou wardly from the plane of said backing sheet to define a second resilient jaw element which is generally parallel to said first mentioned jaw element,

(e) the free end of said tongue defining a resilient lip which projects upwardly from said first mentioned jaw element in generally coplanar relationship with said backing sheet and overlies the lower edge of said pad whereby to limit accidental swinging move- 4 ing sheet to form a thumb tab for spreading'said jaw elements, (g) said jaw elements attheir points of joinder with their respective lips each defining arcuate portions which cooperate to define a restricted mouth for a pencil inserted between said jaw elements, (h) the recess from which said tongue is pressed extending into said second mentioned jaw element and terminating at approximately the lip thereof whereby to facilitate separation of said jaw elements by said thumb tab.
