4 Claims. (Cl. 210-135) cured in closed position by catches or by keys guided in loops fastened to the cover or iap and prevented by means of noses from accidentially sliding out of the loops.
In this way, a safe and low-priced seal is provided and also an opportunity of inspecting and cleaning the seats prior to closing. This is not possible in existing valve v seals used in such arrangements, so that frequently considerable damage was done when objects like Arags or the like became jammed between the covers or their seats and thus prevented proper sealing. Furthermore, the
valve spindle easily decayed, and the valves in consequence thereofcould be operated only with great diiculty or not at all. l
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a vertical section of a floor drain with backwash arrangement according to the invention;
Fig. 2, a top view of the drain with the cover plates removed;
Fig. 3, a top view of the drain with the cover plates put on; and
Fig. 4, a section of a sealing ring.
The oor drain casing 1 is made partly of concrete and has inlet, central and discharge sections covered on top by cover means, i. e. three cover plates 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Below the cover plate 2 a mud box 5 is positioned and so constructed that oating matter is kept away from the valve seat. Within the drain casing 1 vertical separating walls 6, 7, an immersed wall 8, a horizontal valve plate 10, a horizontal plate 11 and a discharge pipe 9 are embedded in concrete. The walls 6, 7, 8 together with the bottom of the casing 1, thus constitute passage means for conducting liquid. The horizontal valve plate 10 has a circular opening or aperture 12 which is normally open and can be closed by a pivoted hand valve 13 hinged to the wall 7 and usually turned up, as indicated by broken lines in Fig. l. In the center of the pivoted hand valve 13 a pin 14 is positioned about which lthe catch 1S is movably disposed and in engagement with noses 16, 17 which may be cast on or welded to the valve plate 10. The pin M1, the catch 15 and the noses 16, 17 thus constitute locking means. These noses may also be embeddedV in the walls of the drain 1, and the valve plate may be secured by a key seal.
The pivoted hand valve 13 is sealed on its seat by a rubber cord 18 of T-shaped cross section inserted in the top of the valve plate 10 adjacent the opening 12. When the cover plate 3 over the central section of the casing 2,796,988 -taterntecl June 25, 1957 is taken o and the pivoted hand valve 13 turned up the seat thereof can be readily inspected to prevent ragsand :the like from interfering with good sealing. In known valve seals such inspection is Ypossible only with great ditliculty. v
The automatically acting backwash ilap or check Valve 19 which controls the entrance to the passageway through ,the discharge section and leading to pipe 9 is articulated to the wall 7 in usual manner and after removal of the cover 4 and the closure member 20 can be inspected through an Vaccess opening 21 provided in the further plate 11. The closure member 20 is held in closed position by securing means such as the wedges 22, 23 fitted with noses 24, 25 to prevent them from sliding out of loops 26 secured `to the closure member 20. .The seat for the closure member 20 is provided with a circumferential groove 27 into which tits part 28A of `a rubber sealing band 29 of T-shaped cross section. For closing the closure member 2.0 a catch could be used also.
In the embodiment shown the floor drain 1 is made partly of concrete, but the invention is not restricted to this construction. `The backwash device may also be built into pipes, and the cast-iron double seal may be embedded on -the spot without the concrete casing.
l claim:
l. A floor drain, comprising a casing, iirst, second and third cover plates seated one next to the other on said casing, said iirst cover plate being perforated to permit flowof liquid and solid matter therethrough and into said Ybottom of said casing to a rst predetermined elevation,
a second substantially vertical wall spaced from said first wall and extending upwardly from said first elevation toward the junction between said second and third cover plates, a horizontal valve plate connected to and bridging the gap between said first and second walls .and provided with a circular valve opening disposed below said second cover plate, a third, substantially vertical wall connected to said second wall and said valve plate at the junction therebetween and extending downwardly from said first elevation to a second predetermined elevation above said bottom of said casing, a circular'hand valve pivotally connected at one portion of its periphery to said second wall adjacent said junction thereof with said valve plate fand opposite said valve opening for movement in a vertical plane toward and away from said valve plate to close and open said valve opening, respectively, cooperable means on both said valve plate and said hand valve for lock-ing the latter in position when closing said valve opening, a discharge pipe communicating with the interior of said casing and having below said third cover plate an inlet passageway the lowermost part of which is located -substantially at said first elevation, a Hap valve pivotally suspended from said second wall adjacent the uppermost end of the latter for controlling said inlet passageway so as to permit flow from said hand valve toward said discharge pipe while inhibiting flow from said discharge pipe back toward said hand valve, a horizontal access plate located below Vsaid third cover plate 'and extending across the uppermost part of said inlet passageway from said uppermost end of said second wall to the adjacent side portions of said casing, said access plate being provided with an access opening, a closure member removably positioned on said access plate and over said access opening, andadditional cooperable means on both said access plate and said closure member for locking the latter in position when closing said access opening.

A floor drain, comprising a casing having an inlet section, a central section and a discharge section arranged one next to the other, first, second and third cover plates seated on said casing over said inlet, central and discharge sections, respectively, said iirst cover plate being perforated to permit ow of drainage liquid into said inlet section of said casing, a perforated mud box located in said inlet section and beneath said first cover plate for catching solid matter entrained in said drainage liquid, a iirst wall located in said casing substantially at the junction between said inlet and central sections and extending upwardly from the bottom of said casing to a first predetermined elevation, a second wall located in said casing substantially at the junction between said central and discharge sections and extending upwardlyl from said first elevation, a horizontal valve plate connected to and bridging the lgap between the uppermost part of said first wall and the lowermost part of said second wall, a third wall connected to said valve plate adjacent the junction between the latter and said second wall and extending downwardly from said iirst elevation to a second predetermined elevation above and spaced from said casing bottom, a hand valve pivotally mounted in said central section of said casing above said valve plate and opposite said valve opening for angular movement toward and away from said valve plate to close and open said valve opening, respectively, first cooperable means on both said valve plate and said hand valve for locking the latter in position when closing said opening, said discharge section comprising a passageway the entrance to which is located at the junction between said central and discharge sections and has a lowermost part disposed substantially at said first elevation, a discharge pipe communicating with the exit of said passageway at a location remote from the junction between said central and discharge sections, a ap check valve pivotally suspended from said second Wall adjacent the uppermost part thereof for controlling said entrance to said passageway so as to permit ow from said central section into said discharge section while inhibiting flow in the opposite direction, a top plate located in said discharge section and extending across the uppermost portion of said passageway from said uppermost part of said second wall to the adjacent sides of said casing, said top plate being provided with an access opening directly below said third cover plate, a closure member removably positioned on said top plate and over said access opening, and second cooperable means on both `said top plate and said closure member for locking the latter in position when closing said access opening.

A floor drain according to claim 2, said first cooperable means comprising an elongated rod mounted on said hand valve for rotary movement about an axis oriented 4substantially perpendicularly to the plane of said hand valve and to the axis of said rod, said rod having its opposite ends projecting beyond the peripheral confines of said hand valve, and a pair of noses iixedly mounted on said valve plate laterally of said valve opening for ygripping engagement by said opposite ends of said rod, respectively, upon rotation of the latter in one direction.
4. A Hoor drain according to claim 3, said second cooperable means comprising a plurality of keys arranged on said closure member for sliding movement, said top plate being provided with a plurality of apertures for receiving said keys, respectively, whereby locking of said closure member in position is etected by insertion of said keys in said apertures, said keys and said closure member being further provided with respective means coacting to prevent removal of said keys from said closure member.
