4 Claims. (Cl. 22134) This invention relates to a swing top dispenser structure for waste receptacles.

An object of this invention is to provide a swing top for receptacles in which a towel dispensing device is provided as part of the swing top structure for suitably guid ing the swingable portion of the top and to form a guiding edge of the opening of the swing top of the receptacle, and to dispense towels immediately next to the swing top opening.

We are aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the following specification, and as defined in the following claims; hence we do not limit our invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the said device and parts as described in the said specification, nor do we confine ourselves to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be made manifest in the following detailed description, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for the illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:

Fig. l is a perspective fragmental partly sectional View of the swing top and the towel dispenser thereon.

Pig. 2 is a fragmental sectional view showing the swing top with a single towel dispenser on one side.

Fig. 3 is a side view of the swing top with opposite towel dispensers.

The receptacle herein shown is used for receiving and disposing waste and particularly of towels in washrooms.

The receptacle itself is of generally rectangular crosssection with sides 1 and ends 2, The top edge of the receptacle is provided all around with a suitable ledge or rim 3. This rim 3 in the present instance is formed by a separate element fixedly secured and turned over as shown in Fig. 1 so as to form a rounded rim around the top edge of the receptacle.

The top structure of the receptacle includes generally upright end brackets 4 which are of generally triangular shape. The base 5 of each bracket 4 forms a ledge 6 which rests upon the top of the rim 3 at the adjacent end 2 of the receptacle; A flange 7 extends inwardly along the inner side of the rim 3 so as tofixedly locate the top in place.

The end brackets 4 are connected by a longitudinal side member 8, the lower edge of which also has an offset vertical flange 7 to engage the inner side of the rim 3 at the top of the longitudinal side 1 and which is also offset to form a ledge 6 resting upon the respective portion of the rim 3. The top edge of the side member 8 is lower than the height of the side bracket 4 so as to provide an opening 11 between the side brackets 4. Another opening 12 is provided on the opposite side of the top between the end brackets 4. The connecting or side member 13 between the brackets 4 along the last mentioned opening 12 is also offset to form the flange 7 engaged in the inside of the rim 3 and a ledge 6 to rest on the top of the rim for holding the top in position. A towel dispenser box or casing is formed along this opening 12 by ends 14, bottom 16 and sides 17 to contain a stack of paper towels. On the top edge of each end 14 is an outwardly extended strip 18 which is integrally united with an adjacent flange 19 of the ad jacent bracket 4. Thus rigid spacing is provided for the brackets 4 and at the same time a dispenser body is also provided extending generally at right angles inwardly of the top and of the receptacle with respect to the adjacent inclined flanges or sides 19 of the bracket 4.

On the dispenser bottom 16 are provided spring leaves 21 which are hinged at their outer ends 22 to the bottom 18 so as to swing about the spring hinges 22 upwardly and urge the stack of towels 23 toward the top of the dispenser box.

The top opening of the dispenser box is closed by a lid 24 which is hinged at its lower and outer edge 26 so as to open outwardly of the top. A usual latch indicated at 27 is provided for locking the lid in position. The lid 24 has a slit 28 generally along its middle through which the end of a towel 23 is extended in the usual manner. From the ends of the lid 24 extend downwardly vertical flanges 29 suitably cut at the center to form a hole 31 to accurately locate the lid in position and permit the easy removal of the towels through the slot 2-8.

It is to be noted that the strip 13 is integrally secured such as by spot welding at its ends to the outwardly extended strips or flanges 18 of the towel dispenser.

Each end bracket 4 has side flanges 19 extending inwardly of the top. The respective receptacle flanges or strips 18 and the connecting element 8 respectively are integrally secured to the inwardly extending flanges 19 adjacent their respective ends. The top or peak of each triangular bracket 4 is also extended inwardly to the same distance as the flanges 19 and then downwardly to form a journal ear 32 into the journal or hole of which is rotatably extended a journal shaft 34. On the journal shaft 34 are fixed the end walls 36 of a swing closure 37. The swing closure 37 is also of generally triangular crosssection, the sides thereof aligning generally with the converging of the flanges 19 or the triangular covering sides of the brackets 4. The end walls 36 are generally vertical and parallel with the journal car 32. A narrow longitudinal flange 38 extends inwardly along the free swinging edges 39 of the swinging closure 37 The radius of swinging of the swinging closure 37 about its fulcrum shaft or journal 33 is such that it moves freely alongside the inner side 17 of the dispenser box. The towels dispensed are pushed in against the adjacent side 37 of the swinging closure so as to push toward the opposite direction so that the space gradually enlarges between edge 39 of the swinging closure 37 and the adjacent side 17 of the dispenser assuring that the towel falls into this waste receptacle.

As shown in Fig. 3, two such dispensers generally denoted by the numerals 41 and 42 may be provided along the opposite openings under the swing closure and integrally with the top structure, generally at right angles to one another cross-sectionally as indicated by the dotted lines so that the swinging closure when swung in either direction provides the gradually enlarging opening for the disposal of the used towels.

We claim:

1. A swing top structure for a waste receptacle of the character described, including a generally rectangular base fitting over the top of the waste receptacle, upright walls at the ends of said base, a swinging closure journalled in the top of and between said upright walls, the lower edges of said swinging closure being spaced from said base, a towel dispensing casing formed integrally with said upright walls and base along and below an edge of said swinging top closure, said casing including a bottom, ends and sides integrally united to form a box, a flange extended from the top of each end and integrally secured to the edges of the adjacent upright walls, and a longitudinal strip integral on said box along said base being integrally united and forming part of said base, said base and said strip being offset to form a ledge all around to rest upon the top of the waste receptacle and to form a locating flange along the inside of the top edge of said waste receptacle, and an outwardly swingable lid on said towel dispensing casing hinged at its edge farthest from said closure, said lid having a dispensing slot, longitudinal with respect to the box for receiving the ends of towels to be dispensed from the box.

2. A top structure for waste receptacles comprising a pair of upright end brackets, a swinging closure journalled between the top of said brackets and having inclined sides converging toward the top of the top structure, the lower edges of the sides of said swinging closure being spaced from the plane of the bases of the respective brackets, and a towel dispensing box between the lower edge of a side of said swinging closure and the plane of the bases of said brackets, means to secure said towel dispensing box between the opposite brackets for spacing the brackets apart, said box being extended at an angle inwardly and downwardly with respect to a horizontal plane through the top of the top structure and the receptacle below the same, a lid on said box being hinged at its edge farthest away from the swinging closure so as to be swingable outwardly and away from said swinging closure, the top of said box and said lid being generally in the same plane as the adjacent inclined side of said swinging closure in its reposed position, and the side of said dispensing box adjacent to said swinging closure extending at an angle inwardly and downwardly with respect to said swinging closure to guide discarded towels into the receptacle, said lid having a dispensing slot therein for withdrawing towels therethrough from said box.

3. A top structure for waste receptacles comprising a pair of upright end brackets, a swinging closure journalled between the top of said brackets and having inclined sides converging toward the top of the top structure, the lower edges of the sides of said swinging closure being spaced from the plane of the bases of the respective brackets, and a towel dispensing box between the lower edge of a side of said swinging closure and the plane of the bases of said brackets, means to secure said towel dispensing box between the opposite brackets for spacing the brackets apart, said box being extended at an angle inwardly and downwardly with respect to a horizontal plane through the top of the top structure and the receptacle below the same, a lid on said box being hinged at its edge farthest away from the swinging closure so as to be swingable outwardly and away from said swinging closure, the top of said box and said lid being generally in the same plane as the adjacent inclined side of said swinging closure in its reposed position, and the side of said dispensing box adjacent to said swinging closure extending at an angle inwardly and downwardly with respect to said swinging closure to guide discarded towels into the receptacle, said lid having a dispensing slot therein for withdrawing towels therethrough from said box, each bracket having flanges on its upright edges turned toward the other bracket, said securing means being attached to the respective opposite flangesv 4. A top structure for waste receptacles comprising a pair of upright end brackets, a swinging closure journalled between the top of said brackets and having inclined sides converging toward the top of the top structure, the lower edges of the sides of said swinging closure being spaced from the plane of the bases of the respective brackets, and a towel dispensing box between the lower edge of a side of said swinging closure and the plane of the bases of said brackets, means to secure said towel dispensing box between the opposite brackets for spacing the brackets apart, said box being extended at an angle inwardly and downwardly with respect to a horizontal plane through the top of the top structure and the receptacle below the same, a lid on said box being hinged at its edge farthest away from the swinging closure so as to be swingable outwardly and away from said swinging closure, the top of said box and said lid being generally in the same plane as the adjacent inclined side of said swinging closure in its reposed position, and the side of said dispensing box adjacent to said swinging closure extending at an angle inwardly and downwardly with respect to said swinging closure to guide discarded towels into the receptacle, said lid having a dispensing slot therein for withdrawing towels therethrough from said box, each bracket having flanges on its upright edges turned toward the other bracket, said securing means being attached to the respective opposite flanges, and a ledge formed at the edge of each bracket below said closure and on said box adapted to rest on the respective edges of a receptacle on which said top structure is used.
