J. A. ELDRIDGE.
DOUBLE BED.
- No. 259,512. Patented June 13, 1882.-
Invenior N. PETERS, Phnkwhlhographer. wm'm mn. 0.64
NITED STATES JOHN A. ELDRIDGE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DOUBLE BED.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 259,512, dated June 13, 1 882.v
Application filed April 10, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. ELDRIDGE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double Beds, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved bed; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; Figs. 3, 4 and 5, detailed views.
Like parts are represented by similar letters of reference throughout the several views.
A A represent the bedstead, the lower part of which may be made in the ordinary manner, the corner-posts a being extended upward and connected at the sides by the pieces I) I) and at the head by the ordinary headboard, b, and at the foot by rail 1'.
The lower bed, B, is placed in its positionin the ordinary manner, any ordinary mattressspring being used.
The upper bed consists of a rectangular frame, 0, supported at each corner by hinged bars D, pivoted at their upper ends to the rectangular frame 0 and at their lower ends to the inside of posts a. The bars D (see Fig. 3 for details) are made of two parts, a and e, pivoted at d, the length of each part from the point d to their outer ends being equal. The part c is extended beyond the point d, and is provided at the inner ends with a small projection, e, which, when the parts 0 and e are turned in line, springs into an opening, 0, in the part 0 and prevents the parts 0 and efrom turning on the pivot d. The lower end of each of the bars D, where it is connected to posts a, is provided with a stud, 0 the outer end of which is enlarged slightly, forming a head. This stud works in a casting, E, secured to the posts a, and provided with a peculiar-shaped opening, f, the upper end of which is enlarged sufliciently to admit the enlarged end of the stud 0 the lower part being smaller, correspondin g to the inner part or neck of said stud. By inserting the stud 0 in the enlarged part of the groove f and pressing it down into the smaller part the end of bar D is held firmly in its place, but is left free to turn on stud c (No model.)
B is a railing placed around the upper bed to prevent the occupant from falling out.
S is a step, on which the occupant of the upper bed places his foot in ascending to his quarters.
The bed, when ready for use as a double bed, presents an appearance as shown in Fig. 1, the upper bed being supported on the bars D, as before described, and held in its position by a snap-catch, g, (see Fig. 5,) which is attached to the head-board b and catches the end piece of rectangular frame 0. For convenience in making up, the upper bed is lowered to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l by releasing the snap-catch gandswinging it down on the bars D, said bars being held rigid throughout their length in the manner before described. In this manner the upper bed may be easily raised or lowered for making up or otherwise, as described.
If only one bed is desired, the lower bed may be removed and the upper one lowered into position at the bottom by springing the projection e on the part 6 of bar D out of the opening a on part c and lowering the bed vertically, the bars D folding up, as shown in Fig. 2, where the outer portion is broken away.
If desired, the upper bed may be arranged to be raised or lowered by a windlass placed underneath the lower bed and provided with ropes attached at the four corners of the rectangular frame 0 and running over suitable pulleys, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. For the convenience of the occupant in the upper bed, a bracket may be attached to the headboard or frame, upon which a lamp may be placed, and another bracket may be attached to the frame at the foot of the upper bed, or at any convenient point, upon which a commode may be placed.
Havingdescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination of the rectangular frame 0 with the hinged elevating-bars D, substantially as shown and described.
2. The bars D, composed of two parts,c and e, hinged at d, and provided respectively with I an opening, 0, and projection 6, whereby the In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 10 presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. ELDRIDGE.
