FFICE@ MARK COLLINSON, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
CRADLE-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of lLetters Patent No. 253,007, dated January 31, 1882.
Application filed November E), 188i.
Toall whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, MARK GoLLiNsoN, of Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cradle-Beds; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine.
My invention relates to the class of beds which are so constructed that they may be folded in such a manner as to represent, when not in use, some article of furnituresuch as a wardrobe, bureau, wash-stand, Ste-the object being to economize space, the folded article occupying very little room compared to an ordinary bedstead.
My invention consists in the peculiar construction whereby this foldin gis accomplished, in the use ot' folding rockers, by which a cradle is obtained, and in the means for setting the head-section atan angle for reclining purposes, all to be more t'nlly described and hereinafter claimed.
In the drawings, Figure I represents a central longitudinal section of the bed in an open position, with the reclining' position ofthe head in dotted lines. Fig. 2 isa bottom View, showing the position of the rockers.
In these drawings, A represents, as a whole, the central section or base ot' the bedstead, whether folded or open. It is composed ofside pieces, B, and narrower end pieces, G, and is supported either by legs, standards, orcasters,
except when the rockers hereinafter described are used. The end pieces bein gmade narrower than the side pieces, as stated, their bases being approximately upon the same plane, such side pieces will extend a considerable distance above the top of the end pieces, as showna distance about equal to the width of the side rails of thehead and foot sections-so that said sides B form a continuation of the side rails, as will be shown. The side pieces, B, form the main part of the side of the bureau or other article when the bed'is folded, while the end pieces, (I, form portions, respectively, of the front and back.
D is the headsection, consisting ofthe headboard E, the bottom rails, F, and theside rails, G, secured together in any suitable manner. A cross-piece, H, connects the forward ends of the bottom rails, F F, and this cross-piece (No model.)
is hinged to the end piece, C, of the central section, A, so that the head section may assume either a vertical or horizontal position with reference to said central section. The side rails, G, are longer than the bottom rails, F, and extend forward about to the middle ofthe central section when the bed is open, and when it is closed extend down to a pointabout on a level with the end pieces, C. When the bed is folded to form a bureau the rails G form a portion of' the ends of such bureau, as shown, while the bottom strips or rails, F, extending outside the rails G, bear against the vedge of the sides B of the central section.
The foot-section H is composed in like manner ofside and bottom rails, I J, anda top, and is likewise pivoted to the other end piece, C, ot' the section of base A. The front ot' this section, when in lits vertical position, is iiush with the face of the part G, and is formed, like it, to imitate the front of the article of furniture supposed to be represented. v
When in a horizontal position the side rails ofthe sect-ions D I-I nearly meet at the center of the section A. They are held in the horizontal position by stop-blocks l, rigidly attached to the inside ot' the side pieces, B B, against which the rails G bear, as shown in Fig. I. Latches2 on the side rails, G, hook over pins 2 2 on the stop-block and complete the fastening.
The sections D H are provided with crossslats 3 3, which may be removable, if desired, and the slats may be connected by iiexible strips 4, if desired, to hold the mattress when the bed is closed.
'Ihehead-section isprovided with one or more pivoted legs, 5, which are swungup inside when not in use, and a hook, 6, is provided to the inside of the head to enter a hole in the leg` and brace it. The head-section is held in its vertical position by hooks 7, which engage with the pins 2 Zon thestop-blocks before described.
In order to use the bed as a cradle, rockers L are hinged to the bottom of the end pieces, C, of the central sections, so that they may be folded inward. A cross strip or brace, M, is pivoted between the end pieces, C, which, when turned down between the rockers, forces them outward to their full extent and prevents them from folding until the strip has been turned back. A button, 9, is pivoted upon the strip which tits overthe edge of the rockers when folded.
N is an ornamental top, which may be hinged or fixed as desired.
The head-section may be set at any angle by means of the stays 8 8, pivoted to the inner side of the side rails of' the foot-section, which stay engages with n pin, 12, on the head-section, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination, in a folding bed, of the central or bese section, the hinged head and foot sections, the lixed stop-block, and the festening latch or hook and pins.
2. In :t folding` bed or cradle, the combinetinn of the central, heed, and foot sections,
hinged together as described, and the folding rockers attached to the base-section.
3. In combination with the base-Section A, the hinged rocker and the strip or brace M.
4. In combination with the base-section A, the hin-ged rockers, the strip or brace 8, and the pivoted button 12.
5. In combination, the central section A and pivoted head and foot sections with the stay rodand pin on the heed-section, whereby said head-section is held in an inclined position.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name 3o to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARK OOLLINSON.
