Description

UNITED STATES .PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY F. BAKER, 0F GENTREVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENTJN MoLE-PLows.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 25,618, dated October 4, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
`Be` it known that I, HENRY F. BAKER, of Centreville, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in MolePlows; and Ido hereby declare that the followin gis a fnll, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverselsection of the same, taken in the line 'w a: of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of thel same, taken in the line y y of Fig. l. e
Similar letters yof reference indicatewycorresponding parts in the several figures.
'To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, 1? will proceed to describe it.
A represents a draft-beam, which may be of any suitable length, and having .at its front end adjustable gage-rollers Bthe axis a of which is attached to bars b b,f1tted one in each sideof the beam, and connected at their upperv ends by a cross-piece, c, through which a regulating-screw, d, passes -into the top of the beam.
C is a knife, which has its front edge made 4sharpHby-a basil on each side. rlhis knife has its ,upper end passipg through a loo-p or guide, D,-w hich is formed of a metal strap attached to the sido ofthe beam A, The back, also, yof the knife C is notched atequaldistances apart, and a screw, E,which passes laterally intothe beam A, serves as a stay to the knife, as the notchesere litted on said screw, either of them, accordingas the knife is adjusted higher-'or lower.
F is awedge or key, which is driven between the front edge of the knife C and a shoulder,
' e, formed on the beam inconsequence of a recess being made in 1t to' receive' the knife C.
Thereforethe knife,it will be seen,is retained p in proper position bythe screw E and vthe ge F. To the lower end o`f the knife C a conical shoe, G, is permanentlyr attached. Thisshare has a journal, g, projecting horizontally from Patent, is-
t-ted between them, said roller being in line with the knife C.
The operation is as follows: The teamis attached to the beam A in precisely the same way as to an ordinary plow, and as the implement is drawn along the knife C and share G enter the earth to the depth of the share G,
being regulated by adjusting the knife C and rollers B B. The knife C merely makes a narrow cut in the earth, which is closed by the pressure of the roller I; but the conical share G makes a cylindrical hole, which is increased in diameter by. the packer H, said packer rotating in consequence of the resistance o'ered by the earth to its spirally-iuted periphery.
The packer not only increases the diameter of the opening or passage made by share G, but also compresses the earth tightly around it to prevent the casual filling of the same.
The whole device, it will he seen, is extremely'simple, having no parts liable to become deranged by use, and it admits of being very stronglyconstructed, fully com mensurate with the work to be performed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 1. The arrangement and combination of the screw E, key F, knife C, share G, and revolving packer H, as and for the pnrpose'herein shownand described.
2. Theemployment of a revolving mole or packer, H,`substantially as and for the pnrposesherein shown and described.
