Description
E. BASS.
Shovel-Plwj ylmed Dec. 4, 1860;
NAPETERS, FHOTD-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D GA UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EVERETT BASS, OF IAGHITLA, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMEN'l IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.l 30,793, dated December 4, 1860,
To all whom t may concern: i
Be it known that I, EVERE'IT BASS, ot' Pachitla, in the county ot' Calhoun and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Plow; and I do hereby declare thatl the fellowing is a full., clear, and exact description of thesame, reference bein g had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speeitication, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention; Fig. 2, a frontview ofthe same; Fig. 3, a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
To enable those skilled in the artto fully v understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a beam, and B B the two handles of the plow, and C a brace or support for the handles. These parts maybe ot' usual constructions, and therefore do not require a mil nute description.
D is a foot or bar, which is constructed ot' iron, and has aloop or fork, a., at its upper part. This loop or fork is fitted over the back part ofthe beam, and is secured by a bolt, b, to the lower part ofthe brace O, the fork being allowed to work freely on the bolt.
On the beam A a band, E, is ttted, and to the under side ofthe band there is attached by a pivot, c, a rod, d. This rod d has itsupper surface near its outer end serrated, as shown at e. The outer part ot' the rod d passes through a slot in the foot or bar D, andthe serrated part of the rod d is kept in contact with the upper edge ot' the slotby a key, f. The foot or bar D may be secured in a more or less inclined position by adjusting` the foot or bar a greater or less distance on the rod d.
To the lower end of the foot or bar D the share F is attached by means ot'a loop, g, and key 7L, the loop being attached to the back of the share and passing through a hole in the foot or bar, the key h being driven through the loop at the back side of the foot or bar D.
y To the lower end of the foot or bar there isattached a bar, G. The latter serves as a landside or guide and prevents any lateral movement ofthe implement as it is drawn along. The back part of the bar G has a horizontal position, as shown clearly in Fig. l; but the front part is bent upward, placed at one side of the footer bar D, and is secured thereto by a'sercw-bolt, z'. By this arrangement the bar G may be detached from the foot or bar at any time when necessary or when it is not required. This is an important feature ot' the invention, as in some cases the guide-bar is not required-as, for instance, when a shovel or scooter-share is attached to the foot and the implement used simply as a Weed-eradicator. When', however, a mold-board share is required, as in the plowinglof earth toward and from plants, the ghide-bar is necessary in order to keep the plow runnin g in a direct course, thereby preventing the plants being thrown out by any casual lateral movement ofthe plow.
When the guide-bar G is used the footor bar D has a more inclined position than when said guide-bar is not employed, as the shovel or scooter-share requires to have a more raking position than the mold-board share; hence the advantage of havingsome ready meansfor adjusting the foot or bar in a more or less inclined position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the forked and slotted adj ustablebar l), beam A, band E, and hinged serrated adjusting-rod d with the guide-bar G, all as shown and described, for the purposes set forth. t
EvEEE'r'r BASS.
