Description

N. PETERS, FHOTOJJTHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD L. PERKINS, OF ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED CONSTRUCTION OF PACKING-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 25,58 l dated September 27, 1859.
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. PEEKINs, of Roxbury, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a t'ull and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles ot' my improvement, by which my invention may bc distinguished from all others ot' a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
The figures ot' the accompanying plate of drawings represent my improvements.
Figure lis a perspective view of my improved packing-boX. Fig. 2 is a central longitndinal vertical section ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section. Figs. 4 and 5 are views representing the packing-box dismemhered and the separate parts packed together. f
The present invention consists ot" a new construction of a packing-box, whereby it cure and strong box for the transportation ot' goods it can, after it has served this purpose, be taken apart without injury to the parts ot' which it is composed, and its pieces packedtogetlrer so as to occupy but little space while being sent back to the locality from whence it was forwarded.
My improved packing-box is so constructed that the sides, ends, and top thereof have attached to them metallic rightangularshaped braces or shoulders, having beveled corners, so that the sides hold the top and bottom together, the ends hold the sides, and the top and bottom bind the ends against the sides, while the cover is formed in such a manner as to draw and hold, when it is applied to the box, all the parts tirml y together, as the brace or shoulder of any one piece overlaps the piece adjacent thereto.
a a in the drawings represent the sides of the box, b, the bottom, and c @the ends. The cover is formed of two wedged-shaped pieces,
rIhe pieces constituting the sides, bot tom, ends, and cover have attached to each of them right-angular-shaped metallic braces or shoulders g g, &c., formed with beveled corners, as shown in the drawings, so that each part assists in binding the others together. By this arrangement of the braces or shoulders g g, &c., with their beveled corners, it will be 'seen that close and binding corner-joints will be formed, and that a blow or strain received by any one of the component parts of the box-will only serve to bind,
After the other parts more closely together. the bottom, ends, and sides ot' the box have been set up, the pieces ff, constituting the cover, are inserted, and serve to draw and bind the whole rmly together, being fastened simply by two screws, t' k, and then drawing out the sliding wedge-shaped pieces ff of the cover. One of the end pieces is then removed by pulling i-t out in a direction from the sides and up from the bottom, when it and the remaining pieces of the box can readily be disjointed and packed together in the position shown in Figs. 4 and 5, which I have found to be the most convenient and occupy the least space.
lt will be seen from the foregoing description'that my improved packing-box can be set up and held together `without the use ot' Vnails, and will possess much more strength than any ordinary packing-box, as the metallic braces or shoulders gg, &c., serve not only to clamp the parts together, but also protect the edges and corners from breakage or other injury, whereby lighter, thinner, and less eX- pensive material can be used than in the ordinary packing-box.
Having thus described my improvements, what I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent, is,
l. Forming the sides, ends, bottom, and top oi' the box with or attaching thereto the rightangular-shap'ed braces or shoulders g g, &c., formed with beveled corners, so as to make a close and binding joint, as described.
2. In combination with the above, the cover formed in two wedge-shaped pieces, orin any manner substantially similar, whereby all the A parts constituting the box are drawn and held rigidly together, as set forth.
