Application November 19, 1948, Serial No. 61,101
(01. ee 2es) 2 Claims. 1
My present invention relates to a hair-cutting device which is particularly adapted for home or non-professional use, and may be readily and safely employed by any individual in cutting or trimming his or her own hair.
Fundamentally, my. invention consists in a combination unit including a scissors-like frame, a pair of cutting knives, and -a comb member, each of said parts being so designed, assembled, and arranged that an efii'cient, self-operable, and safe hair-trimming instrument is provided.
As far as I am aware, the only prior devices heretofore developed for cutting ones own hair or for general non-professional use in the home are in the nature of hair trimming articles which disclose a blade-and-comb assembly operating on the shaving or scraping principle for removing hair, and thereby not suitable for finish or trimming operations; or in the form of a pair of scissors arranged with a comb attachment on one of the scissor blades.
My invention, on the other hand, relates to a distinctly novel and unique hair-cutting scissors especially designed and arranged as to actually out or shear the hair as is done by a professional The prime object of my invention, therefore,
is to provide a self-operable hair-trimming scissors which may be safely used by any person unskilled in the art to perform a complete hair-cut or trim.
Another main object of my invention pertains to the particular details of its shape and design, whereby my scissors may be conveniently applied to the head in clipping or cutting position; and, further, may be readily manipulated in conformity with the many irregular contours of the human scalp.
A still further feature of my hair-cutting scissors resides in the provision of adjustable means whereby the cutting edges of my knife members may be regulated for differing thicknesses of hair, and in the ready removability of my comb element whereby the same may be replaced, as desired, with other combs of different size, shape, and width of teeth.
Still further advantages of my device are the extreme simplicity of its construction, its inexpensive cost, and the safety and efficiency of its operation.
Referring to the drawings, wherein I show a preferred embodiment of my invention:
Fig. l is a plan view of my novel hair scissors;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a corresponding top view partially broken away, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line l-d of Fig. 1.
As shown in the drawings, my novel hair-trimming scissors comprise a pair of specially shaped arcuate arms I 2 and Hi, said arms provided at one end with handle portions I0 and ll, respectively, and at the opposite extremity with substantially perpendicular flange portions la and 18, respectively. The arms l2 and I i 'arefurther arranged to intersect approximately midway of their separate lengths, being each formed with suitably cooperating openings therethru and adapted to be pivotally held together by a standard leverage pin I5.
As thus designed, it will be readily apparent that my hair-cutting mechanism will be positioned in perpendicular relation to the actuating mechanism, thereby providing a hair-clipping device which is most convenient to hold in using position and easily maneuverable to all parts and contours of the human head.
The flanges I6 and 18 are constructed to function as convenient supporting means for my cutting mechanism and, accordingly, are formed with appropriate attaching means. The upper flange It has tapped therein a pair of openings suitably positioned for alignment with narrow slots 2127 in an upper knife member 29, which knife 23 may be detachably and adjustably mounted on said supporting flange by means of any suitable means, such as a pair of screws 2626.
Adjacent the base of the lower flange I8 is formed a shoulder 99, the Width thereof being substantially equivalent to that of the'base of a lower knife member 22, and the depth of said shoulder 59 comprising a supporting face for the body of a comb element as. Said knife may be secured to the flange is in any suitable manner as by a pair of screws 23-28, the heads of which are preferably countersunk in the outer surface or" said knife 22. The body of said comb 2 3 similarly, be attached to the supporting of the shoulder 99 by means of the screws 25-25, and if desired said shoulder face may be slightly beveled so that upon complete tightening of said screws 2525 the teeth of said comb 2 5 will tend to be forced into contacting association with said knife 22 adjacent its cut ting end, thus acting as a guard therefor.
In he d a ings I have shown the opposing cutting blades 2| and 23 of the knives 29 and 22, respectively, as being slanted to efiect a more efficient shearing action during the cutting operation, but I do not wish to be limited to any specific degree of slant as I may prefer any less angular construction or even knives with square cutting blades.
It will be appreciated that the supporting flanges I6 and I8 are suitably proportioned so that the upper knife 20 will travel in a slightly lesser arc than the lower knife 22, and thus assure the cutting blade 2| of being the inner blade during the actuation of the two blades into and out of cutting relation.
Also in the nature of a stop and to control the extent of overlap between the two knife blades 21 and 23, I have provided a small lug I! on the handle II! which is adapted to contact the inner edge of the handle I l at the bottom stroke of the cutting operation.
From the foregoing it will thus be seen that I have devised a novel hair-cutting unit which may be safely and efficiently actuated for cutting ones own hair. My unit is particularly designed so that a user is enabled to grip the same with the fingers of one hand in a convenient position away from the head, and by simple vertical manipulation of the handles effect a correspondingly vertical cutting action at the other end or cutting part of my device.
Similarly, my invention is so constructed and arranged that a user may safely and accurately cut the hair close to the scalp or merely trim it, the comb serving not only to select the strands of hair for the cooperating knife blades to cut but also acting as a safety medium in guarding 4 the sharp edges of the knives from human contact.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a hair-cutting scissors of the kind described comprising a pair of pivoted intersecting arms, cutting means detachably mounted at the end of each of said arms and in perpendicular relation thereto, and a comb element carried by one of said arm at the end thereof and perpendicular thereto in adjacent-and parallel association with said cutting means.
2. A hair-cutting scissors of the kind described, comprising a pair of pivoted intersecting arouate-shaped arms formed with handle means at one end, and supporting flanges at the opposite end, said flanges extending toward each other at right angles to their respective arm ends, cooperative cutting means detachably mounted on each of said flanges, and comb means detachably carried by one of said flanges in association with a cutting means, said comb means positioned outside of said cutting means and providing protective and guiding means for the haircutting operation.
