This invention relates vertible nursery chairs. The principal-purpose of the, invention is to provide a portable, rugged and attractive nursery chair which is easy and economical to manufacture; which may be applied to. the conventional bathroom seat for use by =infants,-or attached to the back of the front seat of a-motor vehicleas an infants car seat; and whichacomprises a removable and foldable seat member adapted to be easily carried about and used separatelyas an infants toilet seat in public rest rooms or elsewhere.
A more specific-object. of this invention istO provide aconvertible nursery chair having a seat frame adapted removablyto receive aseparable toilet seatwhich, after removal, is foldable upon itself to .relativelysmall compass so that it may be conveniently carried in a bag or small package.
Another particular object is to equip the nursery chair with a foldable back member hinged to the seat frame and adapted to be latched in folded upright position to serve as a back restf-or to be extended and swung downwardly onto the toilet seat to serve as a cushioned, unapertured seat membere when :the .chair is used'as a car seat. U 1 Other novel features and advantages of the improved nursery chair will become apparent from the following description of the recommended embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and will be pointed out the appended claims. It will be understood, however, that the structural details of the chair herein illustrated and described may be varied without departing from the essence of the invention as defined in the claims. In the drawings,
Fig. l. is a plan view of the assembled nursery chair, as arranged for use on a conventional bathroom seat, a foot rest of the chair being broken away;
Fig. 2 is a front view of Fig. 1, with a portion of the foot rest broken away;
Fig. 3 is a side view looking to the right of Fig. 1;
4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1, showing the chair converted for use as a car seat, and provided with a removable support adapted to hook over the permanent front seat of the vehicle;
,to improvements in 0011-.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the detached,
foldable toilet seat; and
In the particular form chosen for the purpose 'dCilaims. (01. 131) of illustration, ,the convertible nursery chair comprises essentially a seat frame having parallel wooden side members H, .a frontcross piece l2 consisting of a flat metal bar attached to the under side of said members, and a back cross piece it consisting of am'etal angle bar fastened to and beneath the rear ends of the side members; a foldable, combination back and seat rest M (Fig. 1), consisting of thepart l5. pivotally connected to the rear margins. of the sides II, as by hinges l6, and the extension part l-l pivotally connected to the outer edge of part It, as by hinges 8; a removable toilet seat l9 (Fig. 5), consisting of similar side members 25 and 2|, pivotally connected at their abutting rear 'portions,-as by a hinge 22, and normally resting on the bars [2 and 13 between the sides H.
Metal, armbrackets 23 of inverted U-shape are suitably attached to said sides I I, and support Wooden arm. rests 2 iwhich carry a cross belt or strap 25. Metal side brackets 26 are adjustablymounted on the outer edges of the frame sides! 8, and support at their free forward ends a-footrest '21. Y For useas a juvenile'bathroom chain'the seat frame is preferably equipped with depending attachments which serve to hold the chair rigidly in place on a conventional adult bathroom toilet seat (not shown). A pair of. rubber-covered front lugs or clips 28 are fixedly attached to the front bar 52, and a rubber-covered hook member 29 is slidably attached to the rear bar l3, as by a loop-like bracket til. The front clips and rear hook are preferably flexible and may be bent, if necessary, to fit the adult seat, In this usage, the parts l5 and l! of the back rest M are folded together in upright position, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3, and held in such position by swinging latch members M which have hook portions engaging on bolts 32 passing through the rear legs of the arm brackets 23, and removably secured by Wing nuts 33. Loosening of the wing nuts frees the latches, which are pivoted to the back part l5, and permits the back rest to be extended forwardly, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4, and to rest flatwise on the toilet seat 20, 2! to provide a cushioned seat, the hinged parts of the back rest being suitably upholstered. Other forms of latching members may be employed, if desired.
The outer side edges 34 of the removable toilet seat are preferably beveled or inclined downwardly and outwardly, and the inner edges of the frame sides H are correspondingly beveled or inclined, so that the abutting edges interlock to hold the flattened seat in position. The toilet seat 19 is easily removed from the chair seat frame by sliding the seat I9 forwardly a few inches to clear the overhanging back rest, and then folding the parts an and 2! on the hinge 22 to disconnect the interlocked edges at 34. F'he hinged halves of the detached toilet seat may then be. folded. against. each other, so that the folded seat may be carried in a hand bag or the like while traveling, for use on an adult toilet seat in a public rest room, or elsewhere, as aforesaid.
For use as a car seat, the back rest or cushion parts 15 and I! are unlatched from the arm brackets and swung forwardly to extended position, over the toilet seat l9, or onto the side frames I I, if the seat has been removed, as shownv in Fig. 4. A carrier or supporting frame consisting of a pair of metal bars 40 havingrubbercovered, hookshaped upper ends 42, and connected by a cross bar 43 at their lower ends, is adapted to be applied to the back of the front seat of a motor vehicle, in an obviousmanner. The bars 40 have a series of corresponding keyhole slots 44' spaced vertically of the supporting frame, and complemental pairs of such slots are adapted to receive the blots 32 carried by the arm brackets 23, as previously explained. The car seat may thus be removably and adjustably connected to the supporting bars 4% by passing the bolts through appropriate slots 44 and through the apertures of the brackets 23, and then applying and tightening the wing nuts 33 (Fig. 4).
We claim:
1. A convertible nursery chair comprising a seat frame having parallel side members and front and rear cross members attached under said side members, a toilet seat detachably applied. to said frame between said side members and on said cross members, the toilet seat having pivotally interconnected side parts whereby the detached seat may be folded upon itself, and the side members and seat parts having slidably interfitting edges whereby the seat may be slid forwardly of said frame.
,2. A convertible nursery chair comprising a seat frame having parallel side members and front and rear cross members attached under said side members, a toilet seat detachably applied to said frame between said side members and on said cross members, the toilet seat having pivotally interconnected side parts whereby the detached seat may be folded upon itself, and the side members and seat parts having slidably interfitting edges whereby the seat may be slid forwardly of said. frame, and. a back rest having a pair of pivotally connected parts, one of said parts being hinged to the back of said frame, whereby the back rest may be folded to upright position or extended forwardly to rest on said side members and serve as a seat rest.
3. A convertible nursery chair comprising a seat frame, a toilet seat removably applied to said frame, a back rest having pivotally interconnected parts foldable upon each other, and a hinge pivotally connecting one of said parts to the back of said frame, whereby the back rest may be folded upon itself and swung to upright position or, alternatively extended forwardly to rest on said frame and serve as a seat.
4. A convertible nursery chair comprising a seat frame, arm brackets fastened to the sides of said frame, a toilet seat removaby applied to said frame, a. back rest having pivotally interconnected parts foldable upon each other, and a hinge pivotally connecting one of said parts to the back of said frame, whereby the back rest may be folded upon itself and swung to upright position or alternatively extended forwardly to rest on said frame and serve as'a seat, one of said back rest parts having a latch engageable with one of said arm brackets, and. means for detachablysecuring the latch to said bracket.
