Description

UNITE STAT FATENT HARLEY STONE, OF BLACKSTONE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO IAUL I. TODD, OF SAME PLACE.
EXPANDING- BIT.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,474, dated December 28, 1858.
'lb all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, HARLEY STONE, of Blackstone, in the county of lVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement on Dilating Bits or Angers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichy Figure l, is a perspective View of the bit as a whole; Fig. 2, of the niain bit; Fig. 3, ot' the bit as spread; Fig. 4, ofthe slide cutter', F ig. 5, of the bolt which fastens the parts together.
The nature and construction of my invention consists of a bit --Fig. l, A with one lip -a into which is dovetailed a slide cutter -B- in which is a diagonal slit *O-. Opposite to this, and in the inain bit, is another slit Fig 2, D of equal length, near to, and running parallel with, the edge of the niain bit. Through the two slits is passed a small sliding bolt F ig. 5, E- having upon one end a nut -cand upon the other a round flat head, both ot' which project over the edges of the slits. Stamped upon the niain bit and slide cutter is a graduated scale -F-f by nieans of which the exact size can be deterlnined.
The operation is-to loosen the nut -cand crowd the bolt En toward the giinlet of the bit, till it is spread to the required size as indicated by the graduated scale, and vice versa.
I claimrThe inode and application of the slide cutter -B- the slits -C and D- the bolt -E- and the graduated scale Ff and constructed and operating as above set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set iny hand in the presence of two witnesses.
HARLEY STONE.
