UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL T. SANFORD, OF NORTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS FOR SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,451, dated March 19, 1878; application filed February 8, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL T. SANFORD,
of Norton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastening Shoes, of which the following is a specification: Figure 1 is a front perspective view of a shoe to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a rear perspective View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish shoes which shall be so constructed that they may be easily and quickly fastened to the feet and unfastened, and which, when fastened, shall be neat and snug.
The invention consists in the combination, with a shoe, of two pieces of leather slotted to form alternate strips and spaces, arranged with the strips of the one piecepassingthrough the spaces of the other, and formed upon or secured to the upper of the shoe upon the opposite side of its opening, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents a shoe. B and G are two pieces of leather, which are slotted so as to form alternate strips and spaces. The pieces B O are attached to or formed upon the upper of the shoe upon the opposite sides of its opening, and in such a way that the strips of each piece may pass through the spaces of the other piece, as shown in Fig. 1.
The other ends of the pieces B O are made pointed, and to their points are attached loops D, to be passed over a button, E, attached to the shoe A in such a position that the pieces B G will be drawn down snugly upon the shoe, fastening it securely to the foot. The opening in the shoe may be in front, as shown in the drawings, or it may be at the side or back, as may be desired, the pieces B 0 being arranged accordingly. The pieces B C may .be secured by buckles, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut-- The combination, with a shoe, of the two pieces of leather B G, slotted to form alternate strips and spaces, arranged with the strips of the one piece passing through the spaces of the other, and formed upon or secured to the upper of the shoe upon the 0pposite sides of its opening adapted to form a fastening for the shoe, all substantially as herein shown and described.
SAMUEL TRIPP SANFORD. I Witnesses:
SUsAN SANFORD, MARY HADLEY.
