This invention relates to the linkage for concealed hinges; and the object of the invention is to provide a link unit, the main linkage of which is fashioned from similar link arms, each composed of a series of plates or laminations,
the arm coupled with one hinge butt being disposed and operating between two arms of the opposite butt, the number of plates employed in the latter arms being preferably less than in the first named arm, the latter arms being pivoted to the first named arm at points adjacent one end of each of said arms; a further object being to provide supplemental linkage in the form of independent arms of a contour different from that of the first named arm and pivoted thereto and to the hinge butts and disposed at one side of the first named arms in such manner as to permit compact nesting of all of the arms one within the other and side by side when the hinge is in closed position so as to occupy the least amount of room with a linkage of predetermined size and strength; a further object being to provide a linkage for hinges of the class described, which by virtue of the structure employed will be strong and durable in use and further, which can be produced at a very low manufacturing cost by reason of employing the sheet metal link blanks or lamina employed in constructing the relatively thick hinge arms; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in construction and operation and efficient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a hinge made according to my invention, shown assembled in hinge butts with the linkage in open position.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the linkage in closed position.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the link blanks which I employ; and,
Fig. 5 is a plan view of another blank employed.
In the construction of concealed hinges, it has been a common practice to employ an alternate arrangement of interengaging links in the construction of the hinge. While this type of (Cl. 16ll64) linkage produced a satisfactory hinge in many uses, I have found from experience that in subjecting the hinge linkage to heavy duties, there has been a decided tendency to warp, twist or even break the linkage of such conventional hinges, thus rendering them impractical for such heavy duties.
After long experimentation, I have found that by constructing the linkage in accordance with the accompanying drawing and the following description, the desired strength and durability is accomplished, and in fact, the manufacturing cost of the entire hinge is materially reduced, especially as compared with the old types of hinges of this class.
For the purpose of illustrating one method of carrying my invention into effect, I have shown a hinge linkage or link unit consisting of a central laminated arm above and below which are other laminated arms 11, the latter 20 being thinner than the arm 10, or in other words, composed of a lesser number of link blanks. The links of both of the arms 10 and 11 are of similar construction and formed from the blanks 12 shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, and the brief description of one of the link blanks 12 will apply to both arms.
The link 12 consists of a comparative wide central portion having a rounded extension 13 at one end and adjacent one side thereof, the extension having an aperture 14, the other side of the link adjacent the extension 13 being curved as seen at 15 and provided with an aperture 16, whereas the other end of the link has a substantially circular extension 1'7 joining the central body by a reduced neck 18, the extension 17 protruding to the opposite side edge of the link and having an aperture 19, and another aperture 20 is disposed on the central body of the link, the latter receiving rivet pins or the like 100. and 11a in securing the link plates 12 together in the formation of the arms 10 and 11 respectively.
It will also appear that a hinge or pivot pin 21 passes through the apertures 16 of both arms 45 10 and 11 to provide hinge or pivotal swinging movement of the arms one with respect to the other in the operation of the link unit. I also employ supplemental link arms 22 and 23 which consist of a plurality of links fashioned from the link blank 24 shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing, the blank 24 having rounded extensions 26 and 27 at the ends thereof, each having apertures 28 and 29 respectively, and pivot or hinge pins 30 pass through the apertures 28 of the arm 22 and the apertures 14 of the arms 11 in hingedly coupling said link arms together, and corresponding hinge pins 31 pass through the apertures 28 of the arms 23 and the apertures 14 of the arm 10 to hingedly couple the link arms 11 and 23 together.
In Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, I have indicated at 32 and 33 hinge butts, which in the construction shown are composed of sheet metal and to which the link unit is hingedly coupled, the arm 10 being mounted on a hinge pin 34 in the butt 32, the pin 34 passing through the aperture 19 of the arm 10 whereas the corresponding hinge pin 35 in the butt 33 passes through the apertures 19 of the arms 11.
Arranged on the hinge pins 34, above and below the arm 10 are spacing bushings or sleeves 36 which seat on the inner faces of the channel portion 320. of the butt 32 and. a bushing or sleeve 37 is disposed on the pin 35 intermediate the arms 11 and washers 38 are arranged on the pin 35 outwardly of the arms 11 and bear on the inner walls of the channel portion 33a of the butt 33.
A hinge pin 39 is mounted in the aperture 29 of the arm 22 and in the butt 32 and a corresponding pin 40 is arranged in the apertures 29 of the arms 23 and in the butt 33, the arm 22 being spaced in the channel 32a of the butt 32 by sleeves 41 on the pins 39 similar to the sleeves 36, whereas sleeves 42 and washers 43 are disposed on the pins 40 for spacing the arms 23 similar to the spacing of the arms 11 by the sleeves 37 and washers 38.
Extending outwardly from the channel portions 32a and 33a. of the butts are attaching flanges 32b and 33b respectively, by means of which the butts may be secured to suitable supports, such for example, as a door frame and door.
It will be seen upon a comparison of Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing that a comparatively large throw or swinging movement of the door with respect to a door frame or stationary support is provided by my improved link unit, and at the same time, by virtue of the contour of the links or link arms, the same will nest one within the other in a very compact relationship in the manner shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing when the door is in closed position. In this connection, it will be noted that the links 12 are provided with ofiset portions 12a which form on the arms 10 and 11 stops engaging the arms 22 and 23 when in closed position as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
It will be understood that various changes in the specific contour of the links employed in the formation of the arms may be made as well as in the size and dimensions of the arms of the linkage, and other changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A link unit for hinges of the class described involving a comparatively wide link arm and narrower arms disposed on opposed sid of the first named arm and pivoted thereto to provide relative hinge movements of the arms, and all of Said arms being composed of a plurality of thin link plates disposed directly one upon th other in common alinement to form laminated arms.
2. A link unit for hinges of the class described involving a comparatively wide link arm and narrower arms disposed on opposed sides of the first named arm and pivoted thereto to provide relative hinge movements of the arms, and all of said arms being composed of a plurality of thin link plates disposed directly one upon the other in common alinement to form laminated arms, the links of the first named arm corresponding in form to those of the second named arms.
3. A link unit for hinges of the class described involving a comparatively wide link arm and narrower arms disposed on opposed sides of the first named arm and pivoted thereto to provide relative hinge movements of the arms, all of said arms being composed of a plurality of thin link plates disposed directly one upon the other in common alinement to form laminated arms, the links of the first named arm corresponding in form to those of the second named arms, and means for securing the link plates of the separate arms together.
4. A link unit for hinges of the class described involving a comparatively wide link arm and narrower arms disposed on opposed sides of the first named arm and pivoted thereto to provide relative hinge movements of the arms, all of said arms being composed of a plurality of thin link plates disposed one upon the other in common alinement, the links of the first named arm corresponding in form to those of the second named arms, means for securing the link plates of the separate arms together, and means for pivotally coupling one end of each of said arms to the butt parts of a hinge.
5. A link unit for hinges of the class described involving a comparatively wide link arm and narrower arms disposed on opposed sides of the first named arm and pivoted thereto to provide relative hinge movements of the arms, all of said arms being composed of a plurality of thin link plates disposed one upon the other in common alinement, the links of the first named arm corresponding in form to those of the second named arms, means for securing the link plates of the separate arms together, means for pivotally coupling one end of each of said arms to the butt parts of a hinge, and other laminated link arms pivoted to the butt parts and to the other ends of the respective arms.
6. In a concealed hinge of the class described,
two hinge butts, a link unit for movably coupling said butts together, said link unit involving an arm pivoted to one butt only and two arms pivoted to the other butt only and to the first named arm outwardly of the butt to provide hinge connection between said arms and butts, and the first and second named arms being each composed of a plurality of sheet metal links disposed directly one upon the other and of similar contour.

In a concealed hinge of the class described, two hinge butts, a link unit for movably coupling said butts together, said link unit involving an arm pivoted to one butt and two arms pivoted to the other butt and to the first named arm outwardly of the butt to provide hinge connection between said arms and butts, the first and second named arms being each composed of a plurality of sheet metal links disposed one upon the other and of similar contour, and each of said arms projecting at their free ends beiii] yond the pivot between said arms and other arms pivoted to the butts and to the free ends of the first named arms.
8. In a concealed hinge of the class described, two hinge butts, a link unit for movably coupling said butts together, said link unit involving an arm pivoted to one butt and two arms pivoted to the other butt and to the first named arm outwardly of the butt to provide hinge connection between said arms and butts, the first and second named arms being each composed of a plurality of sheet metal links disposed one upon the other and of similar contour, each of said arms projecting at their free ends beyond the pivot between said arms and other arms pivoted to the butts and to the free ends of the first named arms, and the adjacent side surfaces of the first and second named arms being of substantially similar contour to fit compactly one within the other and side by side within the butt parts when the hinge is in closed position.
9. In a concealed hinge of the class described, two hinge butts, a link unit for movably coupling said butts together, said link unit involving an arm pivoted to one butt and two arms pivoted to the other butt and to the first named arm outwardly of the butt to provide hinge connection between said arms and butts, the first and second named arms being each composed of a plurality of sheet metal links disposed one upon the other and of similar contour, each of said arms projecting at their free ends beyond the pivot between said arms and other arms pivoted to the butts and to the free ends of the first named arms, the adjacent side surfaces of the first and second named arms being of substantially similar contour to fit compactly one within the other and side by side within the butt parts when the hinge is in closed position, and bushings on the hinge pins within the butts for spacing the arms of said link unit on said pins.
10. A concealed hinge of the class described composed of two hinge butts, a pair of comparatively wide arms pivotally supported in connection with one butt only and two pairs of narrower arms pivotally supported in connection with the other butt only and disposed at opposite sides of the first arms and pivoted to said arms to provide a hinge connection between said butts having a comparatively wide throw.
11. A concealed hinge of the class described composed of two hinge butts, a pair of comparatively wide arms pivotally supported in connection with one butt only and two pairs of narrower arms pivotally supported in connection with the other butt only and disposed at opposite sides of the first arms and pivoted to said arms to provide a hinge connection between said butts having a comparatively wide throw, and the adjacent side surfaces of the arms in each pair being of substantially similar contour to nest one within the other and side by side when the hinge is in closed position.
12. A concealed hinge of the class described composed of two hinge butts, a pair of comparatively wide arms pivotally supported in connection with one butt and two pairs of narrower arms pivotally supported in connection with the other butt disposed at opposite sides of the first arms and pivoted to said arms to provide a hinge connection between said butts having a comparatively wide throw, the contour of said arms being such as to nest one within the other and side by side when the hinge is in closed position, and part of each of said arms being composed of a plurality of thin sheet metal links disposed one upon the other and secured together in the formation of said arms.
