CONCEALED HINGE Filed Aug. 5, 1937 INVENTOR JflJfPflSasa BY E ATTORNE of the butt la, and a pin 33 is mounted in the bearing 26 of the pairs of links 2|a and operates in the grooves |8 of the butt Ill. The respective pairs of links 2|, 2| a are pivoted together at the bearing 21 by pin 34.
From the foregoing it will appear that the complete hinge is made from a single butt part l0, Illa and from a single link which is used in multiples to make up the pairs of links 2|, 2 la plus the use of the pintle pins employed. It will therefore be seen that a very economical hinge structure is provided.
In Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the butts l0, Illa are shown mounted in connection with supports 35 and 36' respectively. The support 35 constitutes the swinging member and the support 36 the stationary support. In the construction shown, these supports are in the form of sheet metal plates, and rivets 31 are employed, note Fig. 4, for securing the butts in position. However, any type of fastening may be provided. It will be understood that the butts may be mortised in recesses formed in the inner surfaces of the supports in the usual manner, depending entirely upon the construction of the supports.
In the construction shown, the hinge is designed to swing through an arc of so as to bring the two supports 35 and 36, which are normally in one alinement, into parallel relation to each other, as is indicated in Fig. 6 of the drawing. In this connection it will be apparent that the spacing between the butts may be varied by the linkage to suit supports of different thicknesses, while at the same time bringing adjacent edges of the supports in close proximity to each other, as is indicated at 38 in Fig. 4 of the drawing. It will also appear that the links are recessed at opposite sides of the central bearings 2! as indicated at 39, note Fig. 6, to clear the protruding adjacent edges of the supports 35 and 36 when the hinge is moved into open position.
The bottom surface I! of the bearing l6 of the butt I0 is recessed to form a stop shoulder 40.
A similar shoulder 40a is formed on the upper surface I1 of the upper bearing l6 of the butt Illa against which the links 22, fixedly pivoted to the butts l0, Illa, strike in limiting the closing movement of the hinge. The engagement ,with the shoulder 40 is clearly seen in Fig. 5 of the drawing, which shoulder is arranged diagonally as will appear. The opening movement of the hinge is limited by the inner ends of the grooves l8, as will be apparent.
The hinge of the character described is com paratively thin in thickness, that is to say, the distance between the front face II and the back of the hinge. This thickness may be varied by using different linkage and otherwise modifying the structure of the hinge. It will also be noted that by virtue of the linkage employed, the hinge can be mortised within the boundaries of the depth or thickness of the hinge, as the links do no not swing inwardly beyond the position shown in Figs. 4 and 5, in the operation of moving the hinge into open position.
When the hinge is in closed position it will appear that the overlapped pairs of links form a substantially solid supporting wall between opposed surfaces of the bearing l6 adjacent the pivot 34, as will appear from a consideration of Fig. 1 of the drawing, whereas a similar support is provided between the pairs of links when the hinge is in open position, as seen in Fig. '7 of the drawing. The combined laminated links and a U-shaped link supporting portion protions thereof.
In the construction shown in Fig. 8 I have 10 illustrated two butts 4|, 4|a different from the butts Ill, Illa simply in the provision of wider bearing portions 42, and by modifying the shape of the pairs of links 43, 43a so that said pairs of links will be completely housed within the bearings 42 of the butts 4|, 4|a as will be apparent. With this construction, the pairs of links 43 are pivoted to the butt 4| as at 44 and movably coupled with the butt 4|a as at 45, whereas the links 43a are fixedly pivoted tothe butt 4 a as at 20 46 and movably coupled with the butt 4| as at 41, the same as in the structure shown in the other figures, the two pairs of links being pivotally coupled centrally thereof as at 48.
It will of course be understood that other Q shapes and forms of links and butts may be employed as well as a different arrangement or manner of mounting the respective butts may be provided in different uses of the hinge.
Having fully described my invention, what I (g claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A hinge for attachment to inner surfaces of thin sheet-like supports arranged in edge to edge relation, said hinge comprising two butts having continuous outer elongated portions terminating at upper and lower ends in integral attaching plate portions, the outer surfaces of said body portions, including the attaching plate portions thereof, being arranged in a common 040 plane and with adjacent edges of the attaching plate portions in edge to edge relation when the hinge is in closed position, said outer surfaces of the butts being arranged upon and secured to the inner surfaces of sheet-like supports, spaced: bearings projecting from the inner surfaces of said body portions and forming, in conjunction with said body portions, U-shaped portions, the channels of which open through the rear and sides of the butts and partially through the front surfaces of said butts at adjacent edges thereof, and a link unit comprising links pivoted and slidably movable in each butt and pivoted together for hingedly coupling said butts.
2. A concealed hinge for attachment to the inner surfaces of relatively thin supports at ad-. jacent edges of said supports, said hinge comprising substantially similar butts, each comprising a long member having a flat outer surface jecting at the opposed inner surface thereof; and the ends of said member forming attaching plate portions of said butts, the attaching plate portions being in edge-to-edge relation to each other with the outer surfaces of the attaching; plate portions arranged in a common plane when the hinge is in closed position, said outer surfaces lying flatly upon and secured to the inner surfaces of the thin supports at adjacent edges of said supports, and a linkage coupled with said,
